I Alt-Enter for windowed mode with no problems and the game doesn’t crash.

I can’t believe it was that simple.
Most things are! It’s human nature to over-engineer stuff.
I’m curious how it will play with VR. One of my biggest issues in VR now is needing to be in fullscreen to get good performance, but in full-screen mode, opening any dialogues (save as, load, etc) will open them in the background with no ability to click out of the sim, effectively forcing you to kill the sim.
You can try Win+Tab instead, that shows all desktops. I run MSFS on a separate desktop so that I can still access other applications. You can also drag it to a new desktop from this screen.

Full screen > WIndowed = ALT ENTER
save/load explorer will now pop-up, or ALT TAB, now enabled
and vice versa

Yea I’ve known about Alt-Enter for, oh, about 15 years – but my brain decided to completely forget about it when I ran into this problem 
I had been pausing and flipping via the menu.
