I know there are a lot of similar topics out here, but still… I currently run Ryzen 9 5900X / RTX 3080 / 32GB DDR4 combo with an ultrawide 3440x1440 screen. Have been thinking of switching to a 3D cache CPU for a while, as it does some magic in the sim. I wont miss the extra cores/threads of 5900X. I just can’t make my mind up whether to just switch to 5800X3D or change the whole platform to AM5.
Anyone out there with the same dilema? How did you decided and how did it work for you?
Pros in going for 5800X3D is obviously no need for changing the platform = cheaper upgrade.
On the other hand AM4 is a “dead platform” already and 5800X3D is basicly its “end-game” CPU. Nothing else to help later down the road.
Switching to AM5 is more expensive, but it has confirmed support until 2026, which is a significant timeline, so I am leaning towards it. I just need someone who walked the walk to give me a feedback. I have watched a ton of reviews and video comparisons, but they are all over the place (that might be partially the nature of FS2020 itself), so it is not really helping that much.
I would consider getting a 5800X3D at this point to be simply a delaying measure for your buy-in to a whole new system…
You can buy the 7800X3D and friends now at full price, or you can buy the 5800X3D now for a smaller up-front investment and have either a cheaper 7800X3D later or whatever the next-gen chip is when it comes out.
(Honestly the 5800X3D is very solid, I’m still rocking mine and very happy with it, but if I was upgrading today from my prior 3700X I’d probably kick in the extra money for a fresh 7800X3D build if I had it.)
Believe that when it happens. I will vote with @Vibstronium on this one. I would go with the 5800X3D for right now. Way cheaper upgrade path and if you don’t like the performance you are getting then go to AM5. You will have no issue getting rid of the AM4 platform with a 5800X3D in it.
So what?
It’s only really dead if you get caught up in the i-must-have-the-very-latest-thing type of thinking.
Sell your 5900X, put in a 5800X3D and test your sim in various scenarios. You’ll soon know if the new chip is good enough or not for you.
The benefit of the 5800X3D is that it should keep you content until we know how MSFS2024 performs on various tech. Hopefully saving you an expensive upgrade now into the unknown.

I’ll tell you why: MSFS 2024 is just around the corner. It supposedly will be built around DX12 and will make better use of multiple CPU cores instead of the single core disaster of this MSFS version.
We don’t know if X3D chips are still as effective in 2024. It may be better to shell out to get as many cores in your CPU as you can (e.g. 7950) we just don’t know yet. Hell Intel CPUs could be 50% better than AMD for all we know (extreme example of course)
Seconded. I have a 5800X3D and am 100% satisfied with it for MSFS. I pair it with a AMD 5700XT graphics card and run 1080p in a slightly modified high graphics setting and have zero complaints. I don’t think I’ll need to upgrade the processor for MSFS2024 and should be able to skip the AM5 generation altogether. I’d rather let the new platform mature a bit more before jumping in. Probably will need to upgrade my graphics card but that’s platform agnostic.
Honestly, if anything, get a 40 series card. Frame gen is king. My 7950x3D would be nothing without it. If you can currently pull 30 fps with a reasonable TLOD, then you’ll effectively double your FPS. You’ll also be able to push your graphics up (things that affect the GPU). That’ll hold you over till fs24 comes out. If you want a tangible increase in frames, 40 series cards are the way to go. If you want to have more ai traffic and a slightly higher TLOD with the same FPS, then go for the CPU.
I have a 5800X3D and am fully satisfied with it for MSFS. I pair it with a RTX3070Ti graphics card and run 3440x1440p monitor or Quest 2 for VR
2D gives 60 FPS on screen
3D-VR gives 36-37 FPS on Quest2
As MSFS2024 is supposed to be more CPU efficient, no need to change for AM5 system, according to me
I upgraded from a 5800X to a 5800X3D and I’m very happy. Money well spent.
At this point I’m in a holding pattern until I see how the system performs in FS2024.
If it does as well as I’m hoping, there’ll be no need to upgrade to AM5.
5800X3D, 3090 Ti, 64GB DDR4/3600 CAS14.
4K, DLSS Auto, DX12, TLOD 200, OLOD 150, mix of Ultra/High/Medium.
80 fps/11.12ms in low-stress environment.
35 fps/20ms on approach to Heathrow.
I’ll go with @V1ROTA7E and @Baracus250 and recommend a video card upgrade for now. I also have a 5900x and several months ago upgraded my RX6800 to a RX7900xtx. My fps went from the 50’s to the 70-80’s and now that AMD have introduced their frame gen preview driver I’m hitting 150+ fps. While that fps is without addons, if I do use them I can see some micro stuttering due to the 5900x with dense scenery and airports but it’s still so much better!
Yes, I’ll eventually upgrade my 5900x but it’s still a decent processor and I’ve OC’d and undervolted it to get the maximum out of it. I’m now happy to wait until the 8000 series AMD processors come out. When I do upgrade the processor my RX7900xtx will nicely move forward with my new cpu.
Thanks for all the feedback guys.
It is pretty onesided, as I probably expected, and it makes perfect sense, but I was sort of hoping for at least someone to get on-board with my idea of switching the platform itself.
I’m not eager to spend the money just for the sake of spending it… but when I did the math, it’s not that bad really… 400 € for CPU, 200 € for B650 mobo, about 130 € for 32 GB set of DDR5 … so 730 € in total. And I expect to be able to sell my current combo for at least 400 € now, until its warranty expires (in january) . This is the main reason I started to think about it in the first place. So it means about 330 € investent in the end, and I will be ready to rock for a few years again. Yes, I would probably be able to buy a bit cheaper next year, but I would sell my HW cheaper too… so I still hesitate.
In terms of frame generation… I borrowed 40-series card from my friend some time ago to try it out and it somehow didn’t work well for me. I had massive graphics artifacts when using frame generation, panning around the plane and in cockpit too, with even slight movements of the mouse. Not sure why, I tried all sorts of display ang graphic settings, but it was not a good experience for me. Something had to be wrong, but I didn’t have time to get deep into it. And with the pricing of the current cards, I would rather skip this generation.
I am not sure if I will even go for FS2024, I am not interested in activities at all, and it will depend solely on the performance of the sim compared to 2020, in the end. If there is a big improvement I will go for it, otherwise probably not. And I learned through the years not to buy the promises easily. So we’ll see when it comes.
Thanks again for the feedback, I’ll made my mind in the next few weeks.
Late to the party but I think You can either switch to a 5800x3d or switch to a 40 series card for the frame gen. Any one of those upgrades should hold you over until MSFS 2024.
Your system is similar to mine (5900x/32GB ram on a 3440x1440p Ultra wide) with the exception of the graphics card (I went with a 6800XT) and with the AMD driver side frame gen that is now recently available for the card i no longer feel that immediate urge to upgrade the CPU as i once did. However considering buying a 40 series GPU is substantially more expensive than the 5800x3d then getting the cpu upgrade probably is your logical choice and i recommend to just wait to see what the requirements are for the new sim.
I think Socket AM5 will be supported for a while … Its just that i personally don’t think it make sense to do a full on cpu/motherboard/memory upgrade with current ryzen 4 and we don’t quite know the recommended system specs for the new sim. So do a small cpu upgrade and get your sim to your happy place and wait to do the big overhaul until next year when we have “hopefully” faster cpus and gpus.
I’d thought I’d provide my bios overclocking/undervolting config which allows my 5900x to hold it’s boost at a higher Ghz than the stock 5900x. These values allow my 5900x hold boost at around 5Ghz for several cores (but not all cores) so it does make a difference in my PC with MSFS so you may want to try it. As I mentioned above, the 5900x is still a decent processor so perhaps this may improve your existing system a little (and for free ).
Note: I did not include my individual core undervolt values as each cpu is a little different and you’ll need to work those values out for your processor if you have not already. These values are critical to reducing heat which allows for the higher extended boost rate.
The appalling Xbox marketing continues to misinform.
Activities will be in addition to significant improvements to the base sim.
Seasons, photogrammetry beyond cities, advancements in weather, new physics and aerodynamic engine, and a multithreaded program are just some of the announced improvements to expect.
Next year will see a flurry of new details and promos to start amping up interest.
Long story short, they say they’re doing all the fixes they’ve been not releasing on MSFS 2020 on the branch for MSFS 2024, so if folks want any improvements to the base simulator (performance, graphics, accuracy of simulation and avionics systems) they’ll probably want to shell out for the new sim.
(Folks who have Game Pass don’t have to pay anything, it’ll be included with Game Pass at launch time.)
