Hello.
I am using Flight Simulator on PC with a Graphic Card “AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, 8 GB, GDDR5 Powercolor”. Is my Graphic card enough to push Flight Simulator? Or do I have to throw and replace it with a more powerful one. I want my visual effects set to “Ultimate” only but my present Graphic Card has always crashed from the very first use, showing a prompt “your graphic device has encounterd a problem and the application will exit…
due to card overheating, overclocking or driver fault…” and I am very afraid I bought the wrong or not enough powerful Graphic Card.
My personal opinion is that 8Gb of VRAM is marginal and will struggle to run high settings. I have just replaced my (MSI) RX5700XT, which was running with VRAM very close to the limit, with an (MSI) RX6750XT with 12Gb VRAM and have noticed the difference, although I haven’t significantly changed settings so far. I would have gone for more VRAM had I been able to afford the cost. I have retained my Ryzen 7 5800X which doesn’t seem to be phased at all.
I’ve been playing MSFS since launch with a 5700XT and 3700X until a few months ago, and it went fine with 2.560x1.440 and many settings on Ultra. 16GB 3200 RAM, later 32GB.
Just be careful with the “Terrain level of detail” slider, that’s very intense for the systems. Lower that and test.
Also I’d recommend to test DX11 vs DX12 setting ingame (restart required).
Then your graphics card shouldn’t have a problem with vram (unless it’s an overclocked model) so there’s not much I can suggest other than try different drivers, update your chipset etc.
When I started the sim, I was on the 3 GB version of the GTX 1060 on a 4k monitor, and it looked fine. Now I’m on a 6600XT worth 8 GB of VRAM and it looks better with higher settings.
It’s not so much about the absolute amount of VRAM, but balancing your settings to work within its performance range. If you go the other way and want to run everything at the ultra setting, then yes you need to buy a graphics card that can handle that.
There is another thread on the forums regarding this issue. It’s not one I’ve personally read because I don’t have this problem, but I’ve seen a title mentioning “your graphic device has encounterd a problem.” It may be worth a look through it in case it’s a separate issue side from just not being strong enough to run at ultra settings.
I had a problem with overheating very close to the “crash point”. I overcame the problem with a Peerless Assassin cooler to replace the stock Wraith and by changing a setting in the AMD Adrenalin software. Presently I’m away from my computer for a couple days and I don’t remember which setting it was. (I will try to remember to check and report back once I can access my computer). I found this setting through this forum, however).
You might monitor your temperatures with something like HWMonitor to verify that overheating is the problem and determine the results of changes you make. I’m guessing you can improve things to be close to your goal but you might have to back away from some " ultimate" settings. But it may be you won’t notice any difference. Might be worth a try.
As stated above, if you’re running 4k, you need to upgrade for sure.
I did reduce Screen resolution, from 1920x1080 to 1280 x 720 and it improved. I am going to search for that another thread which relates about the same graphic problem and I will let you know.
I personally changed from a nvidia 1080 to an amd powercolor 6800xt with 16gb vram and there is a difference, but even though I can not play in ultra if I want smooth experience at 30fps that is my limit in reasonable low and dense areas (not NY or London)
I am in VR though, and for visuals I recommend you try TLOD 105, 155 or 205, in this steps as you will see differences taxing the minimum required your pc. Stick with the one you can manage and are comfortable visually.
Take into account that the whole computer needs to be balanced and cooled properly, so you need a nice cpu for the cpu demanding settings, nice ram and your card (also enough power from the pc, I would say 700w?)
Found the setting: Radeon Chill. Try searching for that. It helped me reduce heat significantly and made things quieter, too.
