[Announcement] Miltech Simulations U2 Spyplane

Alright, now that we have released our most ambitious project to date, the CH47D, we are now ready to announce what’s next.

For the past few months we have been working in parallel on a secret project: the U2 Spyplane - a single-engine, high altitude reconnaissance aircraft operated from the 1950s, and still in operation today, by the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

It was flown during the Cold War over the Soviet Union, China, Vietnam, and Cuba; and more recently has taken part in post-Cold War conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as supported several multinational NATO operations.

The U2 is famous (or perhaps, infamous) for being incredibly difficult to fly. Its design, combining the aerodynamics of a glider with a powerful jet engine, make U2s incredibly difficult to land (requiring assistance from a chase car), and cruise incredibly close to the coffin corner.

Miltech Simulations U2 Spyplane will feature:

  • Two variants - U2R (analog cockpit) and U2S (glass cockpit)
  • A mission system, inspired by real-life Cold War events; including the missile crisis in Cuba and the Space Race; as well as modern events such as the Chinese Balloon incident.
  • Accurate modeling of the challenges of flying such aircraft. Accurate modeling of the coffin corridor.
  • Chasecar to guide you during landing.

For PC and Xbox. No ETA as usual, but releasing sometime this year.

Great announcement! I see the U-2 launching most mornings here in the UK. I had a couple of chase car rides myself in 2020, awesome experience.

I forgot to mention that after the chase car rides I added Rob Barendregt’s GPWS v5 to the Area51Simulation’s U-2 mode (FSX). I then modded the GPWS to include chase car radio calls that I recorded myself.

I can’t post a link but if you search YouTube for ‘U-2 Dragon Lady in FSX - With Chase Car Radio Calls’ you’ll find it.

Wow, just wow, and a summer release is fantastic.
That U2 looks very very nice indeed.
Hope it will be difficult to land as the real one!

Here’s Gary Powers’ crashed U2

Looks cool. Any update?

We recently posted a new dev update: MILTECH SIMULATIONS Summer Dev Update

Thanks, wasn’t aware of that posting. Two questions:

  1. The original release of U2 was this summer. Article now says a few months, so is October (or by Christmas) more accurate now?

  2. As far as what’s in the pipeline, I hope it includes a C-17. Anyway, will you be able to reveal the pipeline before years end?

No exact ETA, but we are probably looking for Sept-Oct now. There is a very good reason for the delay, and it is related to your pipeline question… So yes - there will be news in the next few weeks.

Thanks. Looking forward to it.

Checking in as it’s been a few weeks. What news do you have?

Any updates, particularly any details on how the “chasecar to guide you during landing”?
Very much looking forward to this one!

Updates to come soon (I know i’ve said this a few times - there is a good reason for it!)

As for the chasecar, I can briefly comment on that: The car is a dynamically simulated Object, which means that it will spawn and drive toward the aircraft with real acceleration and deceleration, independently from the aircraft, and based on aircraft landing speed. It triggers as long as a few conditions are met (Eg. the aircraft has to be configured for landing and above a runway surface). There will be audio calls from the chasecar.

You may also deactivate it if you wish. And will be supporting different chasecar models/liveries based on operator and era.

Edit: Forgot to mention - the Pogo wheels are also modeled and simulated (you will see them drop to the ground on takeoff). Similarly we are experimenting with different methods to re-attach the pogo wheels after landing.
