When setting up an IFR flight with an Airbus and then setting the destination as an ILS approach, many times I arrive at the airport to discover it actually doesn’t have ILS.
Is there any way to tell if an airport actually has ILS from the planning screen? Or do I need to use external charts and check there?
Also, many times an airport will have ILS but the ILS frequency set in the flight computer is wrong. Is there a way to fix this?
Click on the airport at the world map screen. Then look on the right. There is a tab called frequencies you can click on. This has the various ATC frequencers, VOR frequencies and ILS frequencies if available.
You can activate the last two points on the world map under “Settings”. (I’m currently not sure what exactly these are called, because I am writing this text here on my smartphone). After that, many navigation points appear on the map. At the end of every runway that has an ILS, such a point now appears, called the “landing course transmitter” (DME). The corresponding frequency appears there when you click on it.
Yeah the issue is that I set the approach to an ILS runway, but when I get to the airport and enable ILS nothing shows up like half the time.
Sometimes it is that the ILS frequency is set wrong in the flight computer, other times there is no ILS at all at the airport even though that dragdown lets you pick an ILS approach
I’m just going to use the web page simoli sent and check that ILS actually exists for now on
The NAV data is updated in the sim every so often. If the FMS has an ILS listed for a runway, then it’s available at that airport, and the ILS freq. will auto-tune on approach. Also, just check the charts for that airport / approach / runway, FLTPlan Go is free and has all updated charts / procs.
I primarily fly in the US, and somewhat in the EU, and have yet to come across an incorrect ILS freq that was auto-tuned in the FBW EXP A320. But out of habit I always verify by checking the actual chart for that airport / runway.
Trick is, LNM shows the approach frequencies and the ‘funnel’
MSFS map shows the beacon frequencies that are beyond the other end of the approach runway.
There are other sites as well that will give you the correct frequency. Try flightplandatabase.com which also gives you metar. Go to the tools page. I keep this one bookmarked and use it all the time. Sometimes the navradio page doesn’t always insert the correct one. I’ll check it before take off or during cruise when I have time.
The problem us the internal flight planner is inserting the wrong frequency. Doesn’t matter what plane it is. I’d say it’s correct for about 90 percent. But always better to check before you begin your approach. I’ve had problems with FBW not inserting any frequencies.
This is good but honestly isn’t even really needed unless changing on the fly. If you select the ILS approach on the flight planning screen it’s already programmed with the correct frequency when you start just like waypoints etc.
It’s nice to know for advanced users, but someone starting out should first learn by just selecting the approach in the globe screen IMO.
Hmmm I’m not sure. When I select the ILS runway at the globe flight planning screen I have never, in any aircraft, with 600h of flying time, not spawned in with the correct ILS frequency already entered. So that’s strange.
Like I said happens to me all the time. Did 3 flights today and one of them had the wrong frequency and I had to manually change it. It was either Osaka or Yokota AB. I forget which. But yeah, at least 10 percent of the time the frequency in the MCDU is wrong.
