Anybody Rocking The Pimax Crystal Super With 2024?

Not as far as I am aware, but then again I am very new to pimax headsets.

Just wondering how the Crystal Super is working out now…I guess it’s only been a day, so maybe not much progress. I have the Quest 3 and like it, but I am considering the Pimax Super 57ppd. So, I’m very interested in your Crystal Super experiences and it compares to the Quest 3…

Fit is so critical. With my OG I couldn’t keep my eyes in sweet spot, as large as it is, untill I built up a custom face pad.

Can’t recommend it for msfs 2024 but for other games it’s great. I gave up and use my quest 3 again. With pimax play 1.43 smart smoothing isn’t smooth, eye-tracking gives me tiny nanostutter. No combination of any kind gives me smooth graphics. The 57ppd could have a better performance, I’m on a 50uw

Thank you. Putting aside the nanostutters, how did the clarity compare to the Quest 3?

I’m interested in the cockpit small letters and numbers as well as the terrain outside looking into the distance…

It’s just great, really cristal clear and bright, nothing to complain about. That’s why I kept it. A bit more Mura then my Quest but no big deal. I was not sure wether to keep it because of the bad performance in msfs 2024 but after I tried it with a heavily modded Skyrim VR I hit the buy button instantly after I had left the game. It was mind blowing. If you can live with stutters go for it. The smart smoothing in Pimax Play is not good too. But I would definitely not buy it without a 4090/5090. Then you better go for a Crystal Light.

I saw an option on Pimax Play that referred to Nvidia FG and the AMD one, but neither made a difference anyways so moot point.,

I am running DLSS Quality and Pimax play 1.00, I have a 5080 so if I turn things up, then I start getting low FPS and stutters and VRAM full warnings….so it does probably need a 5090 to get the best out of it, but then thats almost 5 grand to drop between the two, and while I can afford it, I dont think its worth it over what the MQ3 can do already……plus Pimax have the Dream Air OLED coming which look really nice and more fit friendly…..

I will be returning it, really needs a 5090 GPU, plus I wasnt crazy about the size of it, bulkiness, wires, etc, just personally too much a hassle for me when you can just drop the MQ3 on/off, no wires, and the Pimax has some horrible black/white passthru thats literally useless, the MQ3 has great quality passthru…..

am sure the Pimax can render much better quality than the MQ3, it has to, but its more than just that, hell i wanted it to be all about that! but when it came down to it other things did shy me away from it, but hey no sweat, there are great VR units on the way, including the Dream Air, so looking forward that next year maybe….in this hobby its never regrettable to delay committing to something!

Aren’t you mistaking GPU Frame Generation (not present in Pimax Play) with GPU Upscaling and Sharpness (present)?

you are probably correct….but at any rate, it didnt seem to help with anything…..

I finally got the smart smoothing to work properly! Pimax replied to that issue that unlike virtual desktops SSW the Framerate HAS TO STAY OVER HALF FRAMERATE! Many of us lock it to half framerate because we are used to it. This prevents it to jump in. I don’t know why they just don’t explain their stuff right away. Maybe I should start a thread on this, people are not aware.

Odd situation occuring. Pimax play enabled, green light on headset. Pimax Play says headset not connected on display port. Remove display port cable either end and reseat, nothing, still green light.
Mess about with pimax play headset reboot and service reset and after quite a few attempts it will connect, light turns blue and headset works perfectly.

Happy bunny, do a two hour flight without problem, shut down the PC and next time I boot it up, same problem. Display port not connected… and more faffing about to get it to connect.

I have opened a ticket with pimax technical, but in the meantime, anyone else had this and managed to solve it?

Headset firmware is latest version.

Pimax Play is latest version.

Nvidia driver is latest version.

USB is plugged into a 3.2 port.

Have you tried changing what usb port it is plugged into on the PC?

Most likely USB bus issues, I would recommend searching for @TallyMouse posts/videos on USB bus troubleshooting for Pimax.

Thanks for your advice guys.

I did not figure usb to be an issue since it always says usb connected ok in pimax play.

I will certainy look out for the tallymouse posts described.

Seems you are both absolutely correct. USB it is. When I quickly pull the usb plug and reconnect, the headset fires up just fine.

I have the headset and sim working fine now. Have to say once my eyes got used to the new type lenses in the pimax after years of fresnel lenses in the reverb, I am a happy camper.

Very happy with the purchase now I have conducted a flight in the blacksquare turbine duke from Leeds via Paris, Vienna, Lviv and Kiev and return to leeds the same route over about four sessions.

Is it a worthwhile upgrade from the Reverb? Absolutely, with caveats attached.

If you have a Porsche in the garage and a gold card in your pocket - absolutely.

If you have a young family to feed and clothe and you do all your flying in GA below 2000ft, keep your kids bellies filled, you are not missing out on too much. A testament to how good and relevant the reverb still is, not that the crystal is not worth it to upgrade.

If you are an empty nester, but not blessed with oodles of cash and decided to save the money you would have spent on takeaway food for three years or so, and put every xmas bonus in there too, all to finance a pimax crystal super and fit new guts into your PC to run it at the same time, then yes, that is how I afforded it.

It is just a case of do you jump off the fence now and risk the next latest and greatest headset come out next year, rendering the pimax super obsolete overnight or do you hang on - a tough decision.

I made some observations for fence sitters still with the reverb to be able to visualise.

Blacksquare Duke at 10,000ft. I could look down on factory roofs and still be able to see the roof skylights. Ground details are still pin sharp at 10,000ft (Super 57ppd version and buildings on ultra).

Field of View - fitted with prescription lenses and thicker facepad that lessens the field of view markedly.

Sat normally in the blacksquare duke cockpit, head held perfectly still and facing forward, using just the eyes to look around the panel. On the left side panel, the OAT gauge is visible. On the right sidepanel, the breakers are all visible, as is the very front of the aircraft limitations placard on the right cockpit wall. That is the total field of view.
