Since others may be looking in with a view to making the jump to the super from another make and model, I will continue to document my findings as I go along as such tiny, seemingly too uninportant to mention details can make a huge difference to someone struggling to come to terms with the headset.
Today I did a two hour flight in the blacksquare turbine duke from leeds bradford airport, down to north kent, headed west towards MID intersection, some 80 miles or so, and turned north to leeds again.
Live weather, real time encompassing late afternoon sunshine, dusk and darkness.
Having watched how to actually wear the headset, I set it up. Far better but the HonsVR prescription lenses were hurting my brows after a half hour or so.
In desperation I pulled the second facepad from the box to jam over the top of the first pad. Far better, but had a stupid amount of effect on the field of view. What I needed was somthing thinner to jam between the front pad and my head…
Then came the DOH! moment.
Hang on, the second pad is twice as thick as the first that came fitted to the headset. Then I discovered the original pad is not glued, it is velcroed, unlike the reverb pad. Second DOH! moment.
Pads swapped over and an instant improvement. The pressure was now on the top of my head and cheeks, not my brow and nose. Very much like the reverb.
Take one. If you have prescription lenses in the headset, or wear glasses, you deffo need the thicker pad and I did not know they were interchangable, or different thicknesses; I thought you had to buy the whole facepad assembly. Facepalm moment.
With the thicker pad, the field of view is pretty much the same as the reverb (57ppd version).
So happily cruising along and second thing to hit me between the eyes was some horrible flickering, pixellated artifacts flickering on the top of the shiny wings and engines. What the hell..
After 10 mins of trying different things in msfs vr settings, I found it. Raymarched shadows. Changed them from medium to off. Artifacts gone. Upped them from low, right to ultra, artifacts returned.
Take two. Turn off Raymarched shadows.
Went back into pimax play and turned down the foveated rendering hi res area from 15 horizontal to 10 horizontal and vertical to 8 as per suggestions on this thread.
No apparent loss of visual quality and a useful gain in performance. I flew over north london at 3000ft at sunset with smooth flight.
At the start of the flight, I was not happy with the visuals in the cockpit, it felt a bit like being in a goldfish bowl and very stark. As the flight progressed, this feeling slowly went away, esp when it got dark and I had to switch on the red instrument panel lights.
I am guessing that my eyes are getting used to the difference between the reverb fresnel lenses and the pimax ones. Has anyone else found that on switching headsets?
So now I can make a comparison on the visuals between the pimax super 57ppd and the reverb.
At first glance around the cockpit, there does not seem be a great difference. However when looking deeper, esp at the dials, there is quite a difference. The instrument markings are pin sharp. No blurryness whatsoever, even on the small print.
The big difference is looking down at the ground though. The ground details are clearer at 3000ft than the reverb is at 2000ft. Where building details are blurred in the reverb, such as windows and doors ect at 2000ft, they are visible in the pimax at 3000ft. ( my buildings setting is ultra).
So I am pretty much getting to be a happy bunny. It is slow but steady progress, but then again, the reverb G1 and G2 sets took a lot of setting up when I first got those.
