I only came across this yesterday, while looking for info on the Deckard. It looks like a pretty potent piece of hardware that could be perfect for flight sims - if we have the hardware to run it!
Wanted to post here for those yet unaware of it. The only thing that makes me hesitate is that it’s Google. To me, that means:
1> Unbelievable amounts of personal “info” farming
2> Possibility that I will at some stage have to endure adverts within the VR experience
The adverts may never happen, but they have been expected for some time, not just with a Google headset (I remember many expressing fears about this back with the Rift CV1 and Facebook). If they are handled tactfully I suppose there isn’t much of an issue - such as something unobtrusive in the UI or in the VR shop window - but the fear is that they will appear during a VR session and thereby kill the immersion it represents. Surely even Google wouldn’t shoot themselves in the foot with such a function?
Anyway, this aside - and in spite of it - I’m really looking forward to the reports of how this headset performs. Release is due on the 21st October, apparently. Valve need to give us something tangible or I can see many giving up on Deckard (don’t they call it “Hopium”?) and going for the Samsung. At least, those who can afford it.
Here’s the video I came across while searching for more info
Interesting but the suggestion is that the Apple headset is still the best. Since this is not the final version it is hoped they improve iit before release. Since it is all over Google and interacts with the internet in real time I fear your comments about adverts will be 100% a concern. I would hate to be in the middle of a mission and get an ad for washing up liquid!
I wonder how much processing power will be needed for graphics and how would it impact high/low end systems with MSFS 2024. A pity we have not heard from the Company making it about how they expect it to perform with a Flight Sim.
It looks interesting, but I’m not spending that kind of money on something like that.
We don’t definitely know the price, as yet. We’ve been quoted a large possible price range, too ($1800 to 3000) If it’s at the lower end of the range we have been touted, it would be the same as the expected price of the “Deckard” - which most are happy to pay (simmers at any rate) and I think is fair enough.
If it goes over £2,000 I won’t be buying it, though.
Remember this is a high-end headset, not a Quest-a-like. Was the same with Index - initially I baulked at the idea of shelling out almost £1k on it - but after trying and returning the Rift S I immediately ordered one and have never regretted it. I also just bought a Crystal Light last year for the same price, but would happily have paid another 50% if it was a better headset (i.e. lighter, more comfy and better build quality).
Those factors are what limit my sessions in VR - where I used to spend hours (still do with my Pico 4) but now am wanting a break after 60-90 minutes. I think the Samsung looks very much like the Pico and could therefore perhaps be wearable for much longer, but still with the better performance.
Here’s hoping…
