The mistake from Asobo was not the delay itself. It was the surprise late announcement of the delay late on the expected due date and subsequent lack of satisfactory explanation or communication. Look at the early replies about it, it was mostly complaints specifically about the “surprise” and no details. Most people stated clearly they did not mind the actual delay. This has all become the classic beating a dead horse. Asobo did blow it on the communication. Let’s hope it is lesson learned and this does not repeat itself.
Don’t agree with the opening post. I trust it will work, last time it worked after some restarts… this update was postponed already, trust they have tested their stuff…
Something not yet mensioned here is the fact that having a certain date set for a major release has the advantage that people who share their internet connection with others are notified when the Big Transfer will occur… so they can plan for the transfer, e.g. inform others, start the game at a particular time (say late at night) to avoid being interrupted, or other internet-users to be disturbed by the update.
delayed 3 times
LOL or even LMFAO
My previous simulator was FS2004, and next is FS2020.
I kind of skipped all the others in between, ie FSX, P3D, XP… and I’m very happy about it.
FS2020 is a next gen thing and we need to get used to it ! Therefore its communication style with the simmers also differs big time.
you said that very poetic! respect!
I’m having too much fun re-flying the “Bush” trips in VR to think about any update.
It was made at around 11.30am Pacific Time on the release date - so not late on the release date. Also I think we need to assume that they didn’t know it wasn’t going to go ahead until that time either - or are we suggesting that Asobo knew for a few days or something beforehand that it wasn’t able to be released and deliberately held back communication? What possible rationale is there for that? No, the much more likely event is that a last minute problem arose and they deferred the release to the next available slot - i.e. Tuesday (given all releases so far have been on Tuesday or Thursday, those look like their available release dates).
Perhaps they could have provided more information, but what purpose would that serve? If they say it was regression test issue, or a server deployment issue, an xbox stability issue (given the xbox severs died soon after)…or any other issue, I’m not sure how that actually helps any of us.
This @gordongreig!
I totally agree.
We are entitled to ask questions but we are not entitled to answers.
Totally missing the point and incorrect. In europe, it was late. It is a European update after all, lol. And sorry, I don’t buy for a second that they did not know there was a problem ahead of time. Maybe they thought they could overcome, but obviously couldn’t. Also, like I said originally, better communication from the point they decided to delay would have made a major difference in the negative feedback. Asobo blew it with the communication, period. Hopefully they learned and this won’t happen again.
Irrelevant. I’m sure when they come to release the Kiribati update that will happen on Kiribati time.
Exactly. They communicated at the point they decided to delay.
I just wish they’d prioritize fixing what’s broken first. 6 mos of a lot of perpetual brokenness in this sim.
They’ve said fixing the bugs is a priority. Hence why they provided multiple ways to report the issues.
The problem here is, not every issue can be corrected right away. If we look in perspective, we will see they did a lot in six months, the situation isn’t ideal, the pandemic doesn’t help.
That said, I think we should be a little more patient (yes, more…), no other simulator reached the maturity degree we are seeing in only six months. It’s a big accomplishment actually.
No win for devs. Complaints when updates break the sim. Complaints when updates are postponed in order to not break the sim.
I like that they are open and transparent with us and give release dates for things…I think what annoyed most people this time was that they said to expect to release it on the 11th but it was very late in the day on the 11th (for the everyone except the US) that they then told us it would then be the 16th. Everyone is excited for new shiny things that improve the sim so there was a lot of disappointment. In this respect the communication was lacking.
I feel that the transparency from the development team on release dates is appreciated and certainly not the norm in the simulation community. It provides clarity and can satisfy the patient, unfortunately, it can also frustrate those less so.
It’s perhaps why some developers take the policy, “It’s done when it’s done”. Not saying I agree, but I understand.
I appreciate what they say- I watch every developer Q&A live. The future looks bright. Yet 6mos in, and here we are- lots of broken stuff STILL. Lots of improvements too, but in my opinion, key selling points of the sim still don’t work they way they should. My point is that those issues should be prioritized. The Zendesk is a joke. Upvoting problems in the forums only solves a handful of issues and completely ignores others. Maybe some organizational or workflow changes would help with how these things are handled.
Meanwhile, I do enjoy the sim, but not enough to love it- rather, just enough to tolerate it more than X-plane or P3D.
Not irrelevant. Exactly relevant. Read the posts from the people waiting at that moment. Many were in Europe. They announced a delay late on the day of release. Period. After two prior delays. Better communication will prevent this in the future.
They announced a delay late on the day of release.
You don’t know the time zone, these files can come from anywhere. Now just suppose you would be responsable for the downloads and install… and suppose, there would be something wrong with the downloading or with installation procedure itself, found during the day… like downloads that get stuck or reset… It is quite possible you only found the issue, when your server went buzy and the first downloaders start to complain on this forum… in that case, you’d better shut off that world wide update ! unless you wanna loose all players at once…
For anyone (really) worried… just watch this forum for news, then start the game.
(actually I dont know if it went like that… but I’m a developer, there are worse things than a failed install, when the bugs are out… so I would also pull the plug for a few days, postpone… fix the problem, then proceed… use the Store infrastructure to keep people informed etc)
Stop talking SHI… NO NO NO NO NO DELAYS
Microsoft/Asobo already have a “Community Manager”, who is doing a great job.
Maybe what is missing (at Asobo) is a “Technical”
“Community Beta Test Team Manager”
The Title says it all, and the right person at Asobo, with the appropriate interface to Asobo Managers and Devs, , putting together the right “Community Beta Team” could make “A world” of difference.
Worked well for FSX …ie Hal Bryant
