Attention Female Aviators

,

Women have played an important part in aviation over the years. It is great to see female pilots stepping up with their male counterparts as aviation is seeing more women taking the place that was primarily male dominate in the flight deck.

Clearly more females are taking an active interest in aviation as a future direction or simply to fulfill a dream to fly.

I have often wondered why we don’t see many if any females in the group flights that I run. I currently have around 500 members on my Discord, with typically 15 to 25 pilots at a specific event. None are female pilots. I’d like to see this change if possible. This isn’t a Male only flying community.

I try to provide as much variation as possible in the events, e.g., types of flying, types of aircraft, challenges to assist in growth of skills. We embrace all skill levels, so you don’t need to be a TOP GUN pilot, just someone that loves to share our love of flying. Typically I run around eight events a week across two timeslots, to cater for convenient times for Northern and Southern timezones.

With International Womens Day approaching in March, I’d like to invite all females with an interest in sharing their passion for aviation, to join us in our group flights.

We plan to do something special for International Womens Day and it would be SPECTACULAR to have women pilots involved in the event.

This is a SAFE environment where we all RESPECT each other and enjoy FRIENDLY banta along with grow our aviation skills together and improve our overall immersion in the group flights.

Please consider joining the group flights. You can join the Discord Server for Aussie Group Flights Team by clicking on the following link: Aussie Group Flights Team - On-line Flying

Regards, Paul.

From Navigraph’s latest survey.

The female user base seems to be very small, very rare to hear a female voice on Vatsim or PilotEdge and I fly on the network 6-10 hours a day.

I think it is important to ensure that whatever percentage there is out there, that they feel included and welcomed.

Would like to express my support for this - great initiative. I’m one of the 97.3% but wholeheartedly support any initiatives that encourage and support women to join in this wonderful hobby. Hopefully, the more declarations of support we have from the existing community the easier it will be for everyone to participate.

Interesting facts about Women in Aviation …

1976: Emily Howell Warner becomes the first woman in the United States to work as an airline captain.

1985: Qantas’ first female pilots Sharelle Quinn and Ann Bennett.
Both are still flying for Qantas as Boeing 747captains.

1928: Amelia Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Nancy Bird Walton: Nancy Bird, was a pioneering Australian aviator. Known as the Angel of the Outback, she was the founder and patron of the Australian Women Pilot’s Association. She was awarded Order of the British Empire(OBE) in 1966 for her charity work. Appointed the Order of Australia (AO) in 1990.

1930: Yvonne Pope Sintes, who was born Yvonne Elizabeth van den Hoek on 8 September 1930 in Pretoria, South Africa, was the first female air traffic controller at Gatwick airport and later became Britain’s first female commercial airline captain

2022: Zara Rutherford flew around the world in 155 days at age 19. Making her the youngest woman to circumnavigate the globe.

2023: Chloe Familton flew 14,100kms stopping at 40 aerodromes as she circumnavigated Australia over 19 days. Making her the youngest pilot at 17yrs old.

1986: Jan Everest became Air New Zealand’s first Female Captain.

2016: Kate McWilliams - world’s youngest female airline captain.

1929: Louise McPhetridge Thaden won the first Women’s Air Derby and was the only woman to hold three aviation records simultaneously (altitude, endurance and speed).

I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the many women that provide support services for the Aviation Industry. Hostesses, Booking Staff, Ground Crew, Admin Staff. The list goes on. It is often these people that provide the face of the company we are flying with. We seldom see the pilots but often base our experience on the support staff that provide the important service during our flight.

1927: Millicent Bryant was the first Australian female to receive her pilot’s licence in March 1927 at 49 years old, but she has sadly been largely forgotten by aviation history. This is likely because she was tragically killed in the Greycliffe ferry accident in 1927 that claimed the lives of 40 Sydneysiders.

1921: Bessie Coleman broke the racial barrier and became the first African-American to earn an international pilot’s license.

1922-88: Sheila Christine Scott OBE was an English aviator who broke over 100 aviation records through her long distance flights, which included a 34,000 mile “world and a half flight”. During this flight she became the first person to fly over the North Pole in a small aircraft.

1974: Rosemary Mariner was the first woman to fly a tactical fighter jet in the US Navy.

1953: Jacqueline Cochran was the first woman to break the sound barrier.

1995: Eileen Collins became the first female Space Shuttle Pilot.

1964: Jerrie Mock becomes the first woman to fly around the world solo in her Cessna 180 The Spirit of Columbus aka “Charlie”.

“No one” even knows about this…

Read all about it in her book “Three-Eight Charlie”.

I can’t believe you didn’t include Turi Widerøe

Since we are here talking about amazing Female Aviators, I’ve been listening to an audiobook of “The Happy Bottom Riding Club – The Life and Times of Pancho Barnes”, who is, easily, my favorite of all the famous Female Aviation Pioneers.

What a life she lived!

I’m sure there are many others that haven’t been mentioned. But we CELEBRATED ALL Women aviators.
