Axis and Ohs: Help and questions

The overlay template I included is a Photoshop file - this includes all the layers needed so someone can easily adjust to their needs.

But Photoshop can be a complicated program to use. I’ll make a flat image file and you could use that in any editor, even Paint. It might be a little more fiddly than the Photoshop version but with some care and attention you can certainly make that work.

Tonight when I get home I’ll do that and edit this post with a link to the flat image file.

EDIT:

Just open that up then right-click and “Save As”

As a bonus, here’s the one I currently use for the Piper Arrow:

To help you along, the grey background color is #545457 and the font I used is Arial, bold, and sizes 12, 10, and 8,

This is very kind of you and I really do appreciate you taking the time to help me. It will take me some time to experiment with this and learn how to see and use Layers etc. to make modifications. It won’t be fast but I will learn and have fun.

So I had a bad sim crash this morning mid flight which locked up my PC for several minutes. I had zero peripheral function and trying to use mouse caused the MOBO beeps that always mean bad things. Anyway I had to a power shut down and on restart my AAO is dead. I can’t connect to the sim now and all my templates and files seem to be gone. I did force connection but it brings up the wrong active AC and even then no profiles.

Any thoughts on where to go from here? I’ve done a couple of restarts with the sim which now seems to be okay but AAO still not functioning properly.

I still have the AAO files in my documents folder but they aren’t available from the application.

Sorry, idea. Never heard of anything like this.

Define “wrong” - AAO is just displaying the aircraft that MSFS is reporting as currently flying. There is no further logic between what is coming in from the sim and the big yellow text at the top of the AAO window.

The AAO database is here: C:\Users...\AppData\Local\LORBY_SI\LorbyAxisAndOhsMSFS

The important database files are saved in 4 generations, so even if the current one is broken, you should be able to use an older generation file by renaming it.

Well on restart it brought up the Cessna 172 but the active AC was the TBM 930. So there was an obvious disconnect between the sim and AAO. Restarting it didn’t change anything. It will not connect without forcing the connection to the sim.

Should I remove and re-install the program?

Not really. The app cannot just display “something” unless you activate the offline mode. In online mode it can only display what the sim is reporting, no two ways about it.

Reinstalling the app will do nothing. If I had to guess, this sounds like a problem with the simulator itself. The sim is reporting incorrect data, and some if it seems to be missing entirely (hence the need to force the connection, AAO is not receiving the events that are supposed to happen). Make sure that when you connect AAO you are sitting in the cockpit. Avoid connecting AAO when in external views or dialogs for now.

Ok, I’ll try this on next startup and let you know.

Thanks for responding.

No joy. All templates are gone. It now recognizes the correct AC but there is absolutely nothing in Assigned Buttons or Axis. It wouldn’t recognize any midi devices either. I clicked the Hardware change button, closed the program and re-opened and then it does show my midi devices but the cupboard is bare. If I try and load a Template it brings up the window but there’s nothing in it.

Did you check the database folder as I wrote above? Problem is, that if you keep trying and trying, at some point you will have overwritten all backups - there are only 4 generations, so this happens pretty quickly.

That being said, the database doesn’t just vanish, it is a bunch of files on your disk. Those do not just go away unless you consciously delete them. Maybe you should check your disk for errors and corrupted sectors?

If at some point you managed to remove or empty those files, then they are gone.

If you’re saying that every time I start AAO it is one overwrite then yes, there have been a multitude of starts since this problem began. I did locate a bunch of files in the folder you referred to and there are many text files in there from today with a bunch of errors noted. I don’t know if those will tell you anything but they mean nothing to me. If you would like to see them I can post them here or send them to you via email. I did not see any .templ files in any of the folders in the aforementioned file(s) however there were several .xml files but they would not import for whatever reason.

Those XML files ARE the database. They are not to be imported or anything, they just have to exist and be intact.

“ConfigDatabase_MSFS.xml” is the main AAO database file that contains all configurations and templates. If you had a lot of data, it should be quite big. If it isn’t, then something happened to the file. There are backups of that file named _1, _2, _3, those are the “generations” I wrote about. You can try and restore your database by renaming one of the generation files to “ConfigDatabase_MSFS.xml” (you have to remove the live database file first)

Same for the UserScripts file.

If all files are small or broken, then you can just delete the entire folder.

The logfiles are pointless to look at in this case. If the data is gone, it is gone. And if you have a bad harddisk, it will happen again.

Precisely how do I do this?

As far as my hard disc I will check it but I am almost certain it is not the problem. All other programs and devices are working, Air Manager, Add-on Linker, Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo and other peripherals. As I was working through this and on your website I found a program to link up with my Knobster through Air Manager. I did try this but when attempting to add an event using the Knobster nothing happened and I got no indication that the Knobster was being recognized as a device anywhere. I shut everything down for now as I’m unable to spend much more time on it for now.

But thanks again for responding.

This is really simple

  1. Make sure that the app is not running
  2. Delete or move “ConfigDatabase_MSFS.xml”
  3. Rename “ConfigDatabase_MSFS_1.xml” to “ConfigDatabase_MSFS.xml”
  4. Restart AAO. Check the profiles and templates in Offline Mode

…or whatever generation file has a reasonable size (_2, _3). But the size of the file is the key - if all generation files are small-ish, then you have already burned through all backups with your various trials and there is nothing left to restore.

I have two files that are each 721 KB identified as ConfigDatabase_MSFS-2 and ConfigDatabase_MSFS_3. The other two are only 1 KB so hopefully this will work. I’ll give it a go.

Well again, no joy. I received an error message regarding the database and to proceed would lose all data. I cancelled the startup but now what?

Send an email to the support address on the last page of the AAO manual. Include your proof of purchase and one of the files.

Done, thanks!

I am considering this app to address the fact some a/c have the trim reversed from others. I have three questions as a novice in this area:

  1. Does AAO’s affect frame rate on MSFS?

  2. I currently have saitek switch panel and trim wheel and rudder pedals do I need to remove drivers for these or can I just install AAO and leave those drivers in place?

  3. Looks like I can assign the trim wheel for each plane and select normal or reverse for the trim wheel on a per plane basis - is that correct?

Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Brian

Hello Brian,

  1. That depends on what you do with it. In normal operations you won’t notince that it is there. If you are running a ton of complex RPN scripts all the time, that will probably have an effect.

  2. AAO only has special requirements concerning the drivers of the Saitek FlightInformationPanels.

  3. Yes, that is correct. AAO handles all configurations on a “per-aircraft” basis.

Please make sure to try the DEMO version first. It is available on the AxisAndOhs weebly website. The DEMO is fully functional but time-limited. AAO is an external app, it does not change settings or configuration in your simulator. If it doesn’t work the way you want, you can just uninstall it.

If I use a throttle with no detents can I use this software to help me program climb and takeoff position? Maybe limiting the travel so that when throttle is max ingame it’s only at 90 percent or something like that. Thanks.

Yes. You can set software detents by right-clicking on the grey bar of the axis control. While in the detent, AAO will only send the same axis value to the sim. Detents can be resized with the mouse wheel

Again, please make sure to try the DEMO version first. It is available on the AxisAndOhs weebly website.
