It uses the standard Asobo cyclic trim implementation, as oppossed to a single force trim button. The trim implementation isn’t like other helicopter addons. I find it easier to click only once on the respective trim to make adjustments. It is surprisingly sufficient (i.e. overly sensitive otherwise if you hold down a trim button) to ease cyclic pressure.
This setup?
Search for “Trim”
Increase/Decrease Cyclic Longitudinal/Lateral Trim.
Hopefully there will be a manual of sorts to identify specific keybindings sometime soon.
i think to have a over stress crash bug with the door off. i m the only one?
Nope you won’t be the only one. Well, maybe, given most people turn that functionality off because it’s completely unrealistic anyway, so, why bother have it on?
yeah i turn off the option but it never give me pb before with other helicopter.
Anyway its a good surprise for me, i like the model 3D and the cockpit, i dont know if the flight model is realistic, i dont try the DCS version, but it feel credible and pleasant to fly.
Need to fly more. Need a documentation and guide because the avionic is not explain. I ll look on a chuck guide from the DCS version if it can help me.
My understanding is that there is a copilot model but a forced empty seat in the pilot’s position right? I can’t find a way to see both aircraft crew members in the cockpit. Anyone know of contact info for the company to submit a request?
Also how does one unstow the MMS / over-rotor camera system?
Edit: I put in a support ticket through justflight to request direct company contact, a flight manual, clarity on the missing pilot situation, etc etc.
There are ways of developing the model and door actions to avoid the crash, but it’s a choice the developers have to make. I think if you choose the standard Asobo way it causes a crash like you saw. But, with 2024 coming, it’s probably a good idea to stay as standard as possible.
Again, I’m not a pilot. I hope the following observations help an IRL pilot (that also observes similar behavior) provide helpful feedback to the developer:
** since the addon’s objective is to provide as realistic experience as possible in MSFS **
- There does appear to be ground effect. Its very subtle and fluid. If they ever adjust the flight model, I hope the ground effect experience remains close to what it currently is.
- Vortex Ring State: It isn’t modelled. At 10 kts or less while dropping the collective to zero for about 10-15 seconds, you can still recover by only reapplying collective. [Although, maybe this helicopter can actually do this]
- Retreating Blade Stall: at about 107+ kts indicated, the nose will start pitching up as expected. If I force the cyclic forward, the addon will roll right. This seemed unexpected as the retreating blade is on the left (at least from the animation and the typical U.S. design of counter-clockwise rotation). However, reducing the collective, as one should, immediately returns the addon to normal flight and avoids the departure. [The roll right might also be that I never reached an actual blade stall of any sort, and the uncontrollable pitch up slowed the addon down where the torque pulled me over to the right]
- The Turbine Audio: I like to fly with my eyes out at low level. However, it is very difficult to adjust my inputs because the turbine audio doesn’t seem consistent with what the addon is doing. Specifically, in tighter turns, the turbine, rotor rpm, and governor seem to sound out of sync. Although the addon still handles beautifully, it is relatively more difficult to understand what that addon is communicating via the audio feedback. Specifically, the load and energy state of the rotor relative to the turbine and governor via the audio feedback. I have no idea how it should sound, but the audio feedback doesn’t seem to correlate to the instruments.
All of the above are just peculiarities to me relative to other helicopter addons I have. They would be nice to have and experience with this addon in the future if deemed desirable by TacFlight, but they are not “game breaking” at this point in the addon’s development - IMO. If I fly “normally” and casually under 100 kts indicated, the addon is still the most fluid helicopter flying experience in MSFS - IMO.
I reached out to a point of contact I obtained through JustFlight with the following message. I don’t know if the dev team will respond, I don’t know if they are even open to hearing about issues, if they intend on proving further fixes or support, or anything at all. Just have to ask and see. Will advise if I can of any response correspondence. I sent them the following:
TacFlight Team,
Congrats on release of the Kiowa for MSFS. It is being commented on in the following thread, and I’m wondering if you could publicly or privately address some concerns as well: Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior - RELEASED 4 Nov 2024 - #29 by Kapustick
I obtained your email from JustFlight after putting in support ticket.
Concern 1: We seem to be missing pilot model visibility. There is only an option to see the copilot in both the interior and exterior views. I would at least expect to see my own pilot model in exterior views rather than an empty seat. It currently looks like only the copilot is occupying the aircraft (or the aircraft is flying without any crew!) depending on settings.
Concern 2: Lack of a flight manual. While the booklet checklist is appreciated, there isn’t a guide for new users to show where these checklist items are in the cockpit. Users are having to reference the manual of the DCS Kiowa to use this MSFS model.
Concern 3: Users with realism settings set for aircraft stress on are indicating that the no-doors option is resulting in the sim saying the aircraft crashed once picking up speed.
Related to the above points, we’re also seeking clarity on how one can use the the above-rotor camera system, and details you want to share about the avionics in general, etc.
Looking forward to any updates and further clarity you can provide.
Response from Dev based on previous:
Thank you for contacting me and thank you for purchasing 58D.
To address your concerns:
- It’s been reported and I am working on fixing it. Will be available with next update.
- Same as above, flight manual is currently under creation. It will be available as PDF packed with the addon itself.
- That’s a new for me honestly as I used native mechanism for that. I will surely investigate and hopefully fix it with update.
Another issue which will also be fixed is throttle which cannot be assigned to axis in-game.
As for usage of avionics, it will be provided within manual. The above rotor camera system (MMS) due to MS limitations can only be used as forward facing camera. It can be displayed on MFD after rotating MMS knob on the left side of central dash to the FWD position.
Thank you for reporting those and sorry for inconvenience
Will the OH-58 be available for Xbox?
Hi all is it me or is the turbine and blade sounds very soft. I couldn’t induce blade slap at any flight configuration.
Hi all - just bought this and having a couple of issues:
- Upon takeoff I get about 300 yards after liftoff and get a crash because I’ve over stressed the aircraft but not doing anything - marginal lift and then slow flight. Every. Single. Time.
- Every flight starts off on runway with ‘Failure Fuel Boost’ prominently displayed on screen yet I cannot find anything to resolve. Thanks!
For #1, do you have doors on or off. It seems to be a known issue if doors are off. I’d recommend turning off aircraft stress as it’s overall unrealistic for a wide array of aircraft in the sim anyway.
For #2, I usually start cold and dark, but there is a fuel boost pump switch on the overhead.
■■■■ - forgot the doors. Yeah I take them off. Downloaded fix this morning - will have to see if that was it. Thanks!
V1.01 now released:
v1.01
- Reduced rotor blade drop
- Fixed rotor blade leaning to ground at idle RPM
- Fixed NEW Waypoint data input in MGRS format to allow correct length
- Fixed missing throttle keybind relation.
- Throttle can now be assigned to SET HELICOPTER THROTTLE
- Added option to show pilot and co-pilot in-cockpit using Pilot Book configuration page
- Added 58D_Manual.pdf
Just tried this with the latest version. At least for me unfortunately taking off doors still causes immediate crash.
But this is now one of my favorite helos - as been said the flight model seems excellent (flying with an MCG and 200mm extension) - it’s a bird that requires attention. Fantastic military power and torque - give it too much and she’ll flip you like a hamburger.
Flew from Naples to Capri, up and down the cliffs and mountains and the Kiowa just ate them up - very satisfying flying. Takes a bit to get adjusted with trim and flight, but it soon fit like a worn military glove.
Compared to cost of other planes and helos this is absolutely worth the cost - great job. The feel, graphics and textures, flight model all top notch. Only obvious thing lacking is the sound, as already been said - way too quiet for a military aircraft.
I believe the dev is looking into the door issue. For now, disable aircraft stress causes damage.
I just highlighted a couple of other concerns I’ll outline as follows, and the dev already responded saying they will be looked into and fixed if possible:
-
Navigation lights are reversed, and nav light bulb textures are incorrect (both red). Dev committed to fixing.
-
Standby attitude indicator works but yellow flag remains visible. Dev committed to fixing.
-
Asked about an option for the pilot model to be optionally invisible while in the VC, and only visibile in exterior. Dev is looking into it and likely to provide option.
