Looking to pick up some Burning Blue Design’s Airports during the Marketplace sale! Which ones are the must purchase? I don’t own any currently and don’t have any preference on location since I don’t reside in the UK. Thanks!
They are all excellent (I have more than half their offerings!) but a nice little “round route”:
- Thruxton
- Goodwood (both of those have cool details and animated cars racing around the motorsports track)
- Solent
- Sandown
- Bembridge (both of those on the Isle of Wight)
- Farnborough (huge!)
- Compton Abbas
- Popham
- Bodmin (those 3 are smaller grass club strips - Compton has just 1 “runway”)
These are all relatively close-by so good for little prop hops.
There are a load more around London. All good. I don’t have many of the “up north” ones.
Of the few available in 2024 MP; Bodmin, Popham and North Weald are the cream of the crop, perhaps Thruxton too. Outside of MP then certainly Andrewsfield, Compton Abbas, Goodwood, Sandown and White Waltham.
These are more spread out than the list above though. I’ve no idea what’s taking so long for all the BB airfields to be in MP.
Thanks for the feedback, looking forward to getting some of these!
My personal favourites are Wickenby, North Weald and Wolverhampton Ha’penny Green. Popham is also really nice, despite being an older one. But you can’t go wrong with any of them, really — just bear in mind they’ll only be as attractive as the real locations so some are inherently less detailed/more boring than others.
I personally feel BBD are beginning to do less work around their airfield perimeters these days, with fewer surrounding POIs.
If you happen to own the BBS Islander, then the Bembridge-Solent pairing is the obvious choice for the BN factories. I also quite like the little cafe in the tower at Turweston. But yeah, they are all good. Worth noting though that many people used to have serious stutters around Goodwood - don’t know whether that was ever resolved.
They redid the car models, which apparently improves performance significantly.
Good shout with Turweston — another I really like. The later ones (Wickenby onwards) are certainly more detailed, but often lack surrounding POIs. If you like VFR reference points, I’d say Rochester is by far the best — a LOT of modelling around the perimeter.
