Beware of Google Map Replacement

Sure but you change the data MSFS uses. MS/Asobo designed the sim to stream the bing terrain data and this is changed by this mod. So imop it goes deeper than an aircraft, etc.

Totally agree. I have loads of mods, mainly airports and POIs these can causes issues usually when broken by a sim update.

As you say this one is different as it alters the streaming source with host changes.

It looks interesting and I can understand why some people will try it, but the last time I did a full install with all the official content updates it took me 8 hours. Not something I want to do again if possible.

you change 0 with this mod, after revert back, it’s work how before, all data you got stay with you, all data got msfs servers stay with them, and all data of google maps stay with google map, this mod do nothing with data, just change source of online service, then after disable it remove from host exclude, msfs do work again

LOL, people are using mod for this simulator everywhere and we support each other here. Why is it different for this one haha! I am using it and it is amazing in rural regions. I don’t see a major difference in cities but fro a flight from my hometown (Gatineau, Québec) to Montreal is beyond amazing…you can see all the fields and added details and I can finally recognized my location easily now. You see the cracks on the road and it’s phenomenal. As for this mod, there’s only 2 IP address to remove in a file and Voilà, it’s back to normal. This mod is a folder that you copy outside of the simulator and it runs completely outside of it so there is absollutely no need to re-install. Not a single file from MSFS is altered with this addon. Hope you found your fix for it.

Important also if you decided to uninstall, not only remove everything and restore hosts file but also to remove installed certificate. Just open “Manage User certificates”, search by issuer “derekhe” and delete it. Otherwise you communication with some of the microsoft services can be compomised

Will be interesting to see if somebody extends this mods functionality to X-Plane…

Sorry but it is not necessary to redo the sim download every time, with my connection it took me 3 days to do it. Now more simply I periodically make a backup and when these things happen, I uninstall Fs then I reinstall it from the Microsoft Store, it’s only 1.16 GB and then I restore the backup. It only takes me a few minutes.

You probably need to revert any changes it did to the hosts file. If you’re not sure how it works then just delete it or remove everything from it in a notepad instance ran as administrator.

Location is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

The default content is this:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#	127.0.0.1 localhost
#	::1             localhost

.. but it can just as well be empty. All lines starting with # are ignored.

What the hosts file allows you to do is to redirect internet traffic. So requests to a certain address call another address. In this case requests to MS for land textures are routed to your local server, which then downloads them from Google instead. Of course they need to be converted on the fly to a format that MSFS supports. That’s basically what this smart mod does.

I am a bit surprised by the negativity here. What do others care how you use your computer? The only party slightly hurt by all this is Google, since you increase their server load without seeing their ads. For MS / Asobo it’s only better if you don’t use their data. Less server costs. The best customer is one that buys a game like this and never plays or even downloads it. Pure profit.

I have no problem with it, I can use either Bing or google mapping without any problem with the game. Now MFS are not happy, they should also maybe by their loophole, ban the real traffic addons, the addons that inject in the game the livery of the real planes? I don’t see why? this addon is just like any other. what is the difference between modifying an Asobo plane like the a320 and making it a full addon some time later, and an addon that instead of loading maps on azure servers, loads on google servers I don’t see much harm, if addons exist it’s to fill in or add to the base game what is missing for our own game experience. I think it’s just legal, because MS can’t let them promote google’s beautiful maps in their games without giving a dividend to google. it’s just the cause, now it’s everyone’s choice, me, I made my choice, in France, the terrain accuracy is better (zoom 19 or 20) and more complete, just have my video, it’s just a mini example but the facts are there.

I don’t understand why most posts here are so negative towards the OP’. So they made an honest mistake. I personally didn’t touch it but I would of expected something up on the FlightSim.to site not to cause so much trouble. I hope MS have contacted FlightSim.to and asked them to take it down if it breaks any rules or is just plain not a good idea. I think FlightSim.to certainly have to take some of the blame for this.

Why would MS want to take it down? It’s crazy talk. The only one who would potentially want to take it down is Google.

There is 0 harm in this to MS. You’re intercepting and modifying network traffic on your OWN computer and your OWN network. You have all the right to do so.
If I bought the game I am allowed to do ON MY OWN PC whatever I want with it. Also the mod is not modifying any game files, decompiling or doing anything like that. It’s just a reverse engineered network proxy.

The mod causes 0 trouble if you understand what it does. Part of it is modifying the - well known - hosts file apparently (have not used it). You need to revert that change if you want to go back to the MS provided ground textures. That’s it. There is nothing secret about it.
