I have a beginner’s question: If I accidentally taxi to a wrong runway, then BATC doesn’t really notice this and still gives me the clearance to take off.

So BATC has no real knowledge of my location. Is that so, or am I missing something?

I know that if you ask for take-off clearance and you’re not near a runway BATC gets all upset and you get labelled “bad pilot” (ask me how I know!). But if it knows that it’s the correct runway or not, no idea. Have you tried?

Yes, I tried it. I was assigned runway 25 at EDDS (Stuttgart), and I just taxied to runway 07. I was cleared for takeoff without issue.

BATC is tracking your location on the in-app map. I use that to taxi to the right location so I’m guessing it does know where you are. I got bawled out by ATC yesterday for approaching the runway without clearance and was told to get away from the area and attempt re-contact. I think BATC must know where you are, but perhaps there could be inconsistencies with 3rd party airports etc where taxiways and maps might differ from what has been user-imported into the sim and what BATC has access to? Not sure!

Strange. I’ve done similar in the past, and got asked to backtrack.

Another issue I’ve noticed, but I’m not sure if it’s a “me” problem is if runway ops change while on taxi out. Comms stop completely and AI traffic just stops at the runway holding point forever. This happened at default LSGG over the weekend and again at default LMML.

Looking at the log, shortly before this occurs, a METAR refresh takes place, which is, I assume, a change of wind direction. Once I re-load up BATC, the ops have changed.

Okay, thank you very much for the answers. I’m definitely glad to hear that I’m supposed to be rejected by the tower if I taxi to the wrong runway. EDDS (Stuttgart) isn’t a third-party airport, so that can’t be the problem. I’ll definitely try LSGG and LMML today.

PS: Even if not everything is perfect, BATC is definitely a great product, and I’m looking forward to every further development.

I do not spend much time observing air traffic at international airports, but is it normal to have aircraft taking off on runways that are 90° to those which are being used for landing??

I’m watching aircraft coming into KSFO and landing on 28R while aircraft are taking off on 01L. There are aircraft on their takeoff roll with others on short final.

I know that 01L&R are rarely used for landing, so maybe this is how it is done, but it’s pretty whacky to watch.

Also, all traffic settings on 10 sure doesn’t generate much visual activity. It would be pretty easy to get through an entire taxi/takeoff sequence without encountering another aircraft on the ground or taking off. There are a ton of parked aircraft at the gate here at KSFO, but the takeoff and landing frequency is pretty sparse.

I’ve had to sit here a very long time to really start to see activity. If I was actually going to fly, I’d have gotten into the air probably before any of this traffic began to start moving about.

That’s very normal for SFO IRL. There are a couple others that to it as well, but that’s the one I personally fly into and out of the most in the sim.

EDIT: Current ATIS at SFO

I was figuring it was SOP at SFO.

It always bugged me that the default ATC would use 01L/R for landing regularly. It’s a known thing to have been a pilot to have actually landed on 01 – like it’s a club or badge of honor sort of thing.

It looks like the traffic flow modeling could use some adjustment, because I just watched an aircraft land on 28L and its rolling down the runway as another aircraft is on its takeoff roll on 01L.

Yes, crazy as it seems that is normal. Sorry to say a lot of the air traffic system in the US is bordering on being an accident waiting to happen in my opinion.

Cross runways are not taken into account yet…

The ground settings don’t control the rate of movement of traffic. A higher setting means that BATC will inject aircraft that are due to depart over a longer period so you’ll actually see more parked aircraft. If you hover over them in the BATC Traffic map you will (shoud) see the intended departure time.

SFO is nuts like that. In real life it’s like watching a well-choreographed dance. Two arrivals vectored onto close parallel approaches to the 28s from completely different origins, they cross the 1s on the landing roll, and the departures begin their roll on the 1s. As soon as they’re airborne, two more arrivals are on short final for the 28s and the cycle continues, interrupted by the occasional heavy that needs to depart on the longer 28s. Watch flightradar 24 to see this in real time, pop LiveATC on to listen.

Here’s a good example, just happened:

love the way BATC refers to Biggin (Biggin Hill near London) as big gin. Must admit I could do with a big gin.

Does it happen to anyone that traffic planes sometimes have some scattering… that is, they move in fits and starts… for a few seconds…

Yes sometimes. I found this happened the most when flying the Fenix as BATC and Fenix are competing for GPU resources. I fixed this by having Fenix to render displays using the CPU.

Sometimes it can happen in general, try reducing the fps limit in BATC options to like 30 or 45. :+1:

Flew a Simbrief route from Heathrow to Manchester tonight and BATC did a fairly good job vectoring me away from the airport to set up for the approach (headings and speeds seemed reasonable) and then it just forgot me until I just took matters into my own hands and flew back towards the airport and started a descent on my own. As I neared the airport, BATC “discovered” me again and cleared me for landing. Once down it switched me to ground control and gave me taxiway instructions. Manchester doesn’t seem to have taxiway signs so I just followed the blue arrows FS provided. It parked me under an Easyjet. lol

Oh I was in a Cessna 172.
