Biting the bullet and migrating from Xbox to PC - A Journal

No, at worst it would just mean the 7950X3D might be more helpful than it otherwise would be. If we all need something better than the 7800X3D to run the sim acceptably in FS 2024, we have bigger problems to worry about, haha.

In practice, multithreading will mean many people will see performance boosts across the board. Those with CPUs that can handle multithreading very well will see a bigger relative boost.

The Ryzen 9 7900X3D wasn’t much more, am I better off with that or will it suffer the same issue with the current MSFS as the 7950X3D?

EDIT

Just seen that the 7900X3D is older than the 7800X3D! I probably should stop fussing and just stick with what I’ve built…

There’s a whole thread on the 7900X3D. I think the answer is it probably doesn’t make much difference but the 7800X3D is cheaper. While MSFS2020 is main thread limited the 7900X3D has a slightly higher clock rate and so may have a small advantage over both of the others for single thread dominated workflows. However it only has 6 cache cores compared to 8 for the 7800X3D, so could suffer if MSFS2024 improves multi threading. Really the only way to know which is better would be benchmarking a real setup, even then changes such as a different usage pattern could give a different result, and the differences might be a couple of fps at best. Theres no uncertainty as to which one is cheaper.

I think you should chill, you’ve got a good setup for a fair price, any changes you make would be marginal gains at best.

I think you’re right about needing to chill…

Gonna use it initially with my 4K Samsung TV, see how that goes. The current plan is to get a proper PC monitor in time — however I reckon 1440p resolution would be fine as it’d be much smaller (likely 27") than my 4K TV (43") so I doubt I’d notice any difference. Besides, I imagine 1440p at a decent refresh rate should offer better performance than a 4K TV?

You’ll be sitting closer so will see it better. 4k all the way I’m sure, why would you want anything less on this visual feast? I’m only on 1080p because I’m not buying another 65 inch TV. I’ll save my money for an eventual VR purchase.

When I bought my 4K telly, I did some research and it’s claimed that, to properly see the benefits of a 43" 4K TV, you need to sit 2 metres away. The monitors I’ve thus far viewed are only 27", and I estimate that I’ll typically be between 1.2 and 1.5m away from it.

If the above claim is true, I really don’t see the point in buying a 4K monitor. More unnecessary expense. Wouldn’t a 1440p offer better fps anyway?

As RagingWombat839 says, go with a 1000W PSU and 2TB SSD.

The amount of detail (terrain, objects) drawn impacts CPU and GPU usage, so given most are main thread limited this really matters for FPS. The rendered resolution largely impacts only GPU usage, so given most are main thread limited this doesn’t really affect FPS much if you have a powerful enough graphs card. At least that’s my assessment, I don’t have a 4090 to test it with so if others have evidence to the contrary then please advise. Of course if 2024 is not main thread limited the equation changes.

The higher the resolution, the closer you can be to the monitor without seeing individual pixels.

Using hypothetical 27" monitors that are identical except for resolution: From 10 feet away you won’t see a difference between 2K and 4K. From 2 feet away you definitely would.

In your case (27" monitor at 3 feet) 2K will look fine - until you swap for a 4K monitor. With that screen size at that distance you will see the difference. If you get a bigger screen it will be even more noticeable, because the pixels are bigger.

Even more important in my opinion is the HDR level the monitor supports. I originally had a 27" 2K DisplayHDR 400 monitor. I upgraded to to a 32" 4K DisplayHDR 1000 monitor, and the difference is literally night and day. The better luminance, dynamic range, and black levels of the HDR1000 monitor made the biggest difference. Of course, you’ll pay more for HDR1000.

I still use the 2K monitor for my navigation charts and other secondary programs. My 3090 Ti runs both monitors fine, with plenty good FPS and latency. The two iPads are running POPM and Spacedesk. They knock about 10 FPS off, but it’s still fine in most planes, in most places.

Nice setup. The Poets den

Congrats my friend, I’ll be looking forward to your journal of the experience. I’m not far behind, have a few more pieces to buy.

The added scenery, animations at the airports you already own will surely add to you enjoying the sim a lot more. Xbox has been neutered when it comes to the complexity 3rd party offerings that we see in the marketplace.

This is my spec:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D (main chip)
  • NZXT N7 B650E (mother board)
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 4070 Ti Super(graphics card)
  • 64GB DDR5 (memory) 32 x 2

I’m thinking of fan cooling and adding a few extra fans as well.

See you on the other side , lol

That looks great! This is the kind of setup I’m going to shoot for.

I can vouch for the $40 Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 air-cooler. Amazing performance on my 5800X3D. I never see >65°C with stock CPU settings (i.e. no undervolt) with my case (5000D with 6x120mm intake fans + 2x120mm exhaust fans + 2x120mm fans on a top-mount radiator for my liquid-cooled RTX 3090 Ti.
Very, very quiet since they don’t have to work hard to dump the heat.

I can also vouch for the Peerless Assassin 120 - I use it with a 7900x3d (overclocked & undervolted) and never see temps more than 80c. Since thermal throttling starts at 89c for my cpu I never have to worry about it and AMD chips run a little better with higher temps anyway.

I totally agree. I use a Samsung 55" Qled 4k HDR TV and I sit 1m in front of it. Amazing detail.

I was gifted a Meta Quest 3 for Xmas and after fiddling with it for 4 weeks I returned it as it couldn’t come close to the Qled 4k HDR TV (my opinion here!).

Add me to this camp - VR just isn’t worth the concessions you’re making (to comfort, as well as display fidelity, assuming you are on 4k when in pancake-land)

It’s taken me 8+ weeks to dial in my VR (Quest 3) but now I don’t think I will or can ever fly on my monitor again. I haven’t yet and maybe as I’m still in my honeymoon period it will change but I don’t think so. Which is a shame as the screen isn’t that old and is nice (Ulrawide curved 3440x1440).

I guess it depends on what you are flying. I don’t do airliners and I can see for those you would favour clarity in cockpit over a sense of depth as you don’t really need to look outside as much until landing. But for my type of flying (bush, GA, stol, helicopters) I can live with the more pixely visuals for the overwhelming effect of actually being inside this aircraft. It really makes heli flying a lot easier too. Totally love it. With my haptic seat as well, it just feels really a hollow experience without both of those now, even if the visuals are sharper. This will improve quickly I think though so I’m excited to see what future products and hardware allow in this area.

Whenever I read from someone who’s really fallen in love with the VR experience, it always makes me really happy. If that’s what you’re after, it’s so cool that experience can be pursued and dialed in and made a reality! I think part of the problem is my attention span. All that immersion can be a blessing and a curse

How important are cooling fans? I went with a pack of three mid-range Corsairs (AF120 Elite — presumably just general case cooling?) and a pretty cheap CPU fan. The shop said the website would not let me add anything not compatible but I don’t know whether that extends to CPU fans that will prove almost useless? It’s a Cooler Master Hyper 212, which was a bit cheaper than my original selection (Be Quiet Dark Rock Slim).

Can’t speak to the Cooler Master brand, as I’ve never owned one. Be Quiet has a good reputation. My CPU is cooled with a Pure Loop 240 & it works exceptionally well & is very quiet.
