After encountering the lines again in SU5 beta tonight in the Juan de Fuca strait, I noticed that their intensity can be heavily tied to wind speed driven wave height.
Since they always appear along LOD boundaries, I’m guessing this is a problem with the water shader’s displacement or normal mip map filtering, leading to gaps between the waves at the boundary lines, and these gaps render as “nothing” in the depth buffer. This may also be why they show through clouds of any height or density, and why DLSS tends to exacerbate them compared to TAA, turning them into flickering “streamers”.
See examples below with ever increasing wind speed.
6 knots…
20 knots…
50 knots…
Nothing new, it’s been discussed already here.
Great find. This should really be looked into by Asobo!
But if you fly with live weather you cannot adjust wind speed.
That also doesn’t work when the black lines are on land. they seem to be mostly present when looking through clouds/precip.
Still present, and no fix in SU5 Beta. I really hope they’re going to address this issue in SU6
Still present in SU5 live build as well
For me this issue appears to be fixed with SU5. I’ve done several flights since update and haven’t seen black lines anymore.
Can those of you who are still experiencing this bug provide some screenshots if possible? Any details such as the area you’re flying over when you’re seeing it etc. would be helpful too!
I’m still getting lines emanating out from the Alicante coast in Spain but they are not typical single black lines. You get 3 or 4 parallel lines. I’ll try to do a flight today and get a screen shot.
Update: This is just North of Alicante before you get to Benidorm over the Mediterranean Sea
Another shot of the map and you can clearly see the lines there. One other one coming out from Benidorm.
Not fixed for me as well on Xbox, flying around the islands of cabo verde… The lines are mostly visible when moving.
Montreal. Looking west, just south of the downtown area and west of the Champlain bridge
Were you able to see if it got better or worse with different wind conditions like this user theorised Black lines in the water - #351 by Ramasurinen
2Kt winds
150Kt winds
Can’t see much of a difference
And this is how it looks with live weather. It’s a gloomy rainy day here in Montreal.
Still visible through the low cloud layer
For me neither the wind conditions don’t change anything
Taken over Florida the other day
still present in su5.1 beta about to land eham seeing the black line on the sea
Around Cape Verde on Xbox
First time I spotted these in SU5 was off the cost of Nice (LFMN). Approach a couple of days ago and departure just now. Unfortunately no screen shots available.
But overall I have done a lot of flights over the oceans and these are the only times I have spotted these in SU5. Before in SU4 these lines were just about everywhere, even on land.
Yep, the foam in the waves that we can see in MSFS 2020 is still missing.
