Black Square Steam Gauge Overhaul - Cessna 208B Caravan

 very nice interview !

JustFlight : You are rightly receiving high praise for your range of Analog Steam Gauge Overhaul titles - are these add-ons titles all that you hoped they would be when you took on the challenge of upgrading the default aircraft?

Nick Cyganski : The Steam Gauge Overhaul series fulfills a desire I had when I was an avid flight simmer. There always seemed to be a dearth of General Aviation aircraft with high systems complexity, and it felt like the price of an add-on was more for exterior eye candy than interior systems quality. I always wished for these products, and now I make them. There isn’t much more satisfying than that. As far as my design philosophy is concerned, I try to spoil myself and make every other aircraft feel hollow in comparison. If I can achieve that, I know there will be a dedicated fanbase who feels the same way.

he has definitely achieved this goal, now when I 'm flying something else, I feel like that something is missing ! Thanks Nick !

I wonder would it be possible to purchase Black Square products directly from Nick? I bought the BS Caravan from Just Flight but have not been able to get past the JF authentication process! If there was some other/better way to install the BS products I, and probably several others, would be more likely to buy more.

BTW, great work Nick. Your work has raised the standard and so far is head and shoulders above the rest.

Has anyone made or found a checklist for the pms gtn750?

My son made one. Just rename the file to import.json and replace it with the one in the GTN750 directory.

Nice! Say a big thank you to your son! These work flawlessly! And thanks for sharing.

seems like the autopilot is engaging by himself for me now, anyone else with this issue?

never had this occuring, do you have the ap set for a switch instead of a key, may be a mapping issue ?

never had this kind of issue with the bs caravan, the mapping is

no other bindings are set for the autopilot on the stick nor the quadrant

maybe give a try with an empty community folder, (then try to bring back half of your modes)
don’t know if you have any kap140 mod like the enhancement suggested in previous versions (it should not be necesary anymore with the recents update done on the caravan kap140 side)

edit : personnaly I got a key set for “toggle ap” instead of one key for off and another key for on, maybe create a new profile to try this out

I’ve seen this too, but only on the Caravan. I tried using an on/off toggle key, or using specific on and off bindings, but it made no difference. I believe it’s linked to altitude capture somehow, where the autopilot automatically re-engages.

I started turning the altitude pre-selector to 0 when I turn off the AP, that seems to workaround it, for me

Do you by any chance have a Firewall like Bitdefender or so? They could prevent the authentication to work.

Hi JayDee,

It was some time ago now and I just forget all the various things I tried, but I did try to stop everything I could, including virus scanner, malware scanner, and (probably) Defender. I tried installing the BS Caravan in Safe Mode, but that too failed.

The way I got it going was to install it on my old Windows 10 system, which had MSFS installed. That worked. Then I transferred the installed BS Caravan from that old system to my new Beast which is my current MSFS system.

What I did was probably not quite legal, but I have paid Just Flight the full retail price and I am flying this lovely aircraft with a clear conscience.

Hi, I love planes with maintenance/failure features, but it took me some time before I decided which one of the Analog planes to buy. In the end, the things that made me choose the Caravan is that I already have a good KA350 in another sim and the Caravan is great for making money on FSE

I have to say, everything about the plane that is changed by the Analog pack is great! Amazing job, reminds me a little bit of what Simcoders is doing, but with an original twist. Since I’, mostly flying with radio navigation, the new more realistic signal behavior is amazing, and I’m impressed that the dev took the additional effort to port it to all of the Analog planes.

But I think I will also need to buy FS Realistic to be fully satisfied. The original plane that it’s built on just doesn’t feel like a high fidelity plane, it’s just the subtle things like the quality and dynamic of sounds. It also feels “static” in a lot of ways that are hard to explain. Well either way, after the additional purchase it should be glorious

Looking forward to the further evolution of the pack! (and maybe sometimes FSE economy integration for the repair costs like in REP! :P).

Thanks for the answer. I dont see anything illegal here. I also copied alot over to my new system , when I got it last year.

Kind Regards

Just wanted to add - got the FTsim sound pack + the compatibility mod for the Analog version, and it sounds better now. Finally feels like a PT6 engine even if the storm window is closed.

Has anyone noticed that the standby bus doesn’t power the avionics when you flip the standby avionics switch? Try it. First make sure your standby bus is activated with the yellow led glowing. Trip your generator. Keep the two avionics switches off. Then open the red cover of the standby avionic switch and flip it on. Neither of the GPS units turn on but they are suppose to, or at least the first one until the bus tie is flipped too. It amazingly works on the default Caravan, with the improvement mod. I didn’t bother trying without that… you know nothing works in the default default editions. I even tried removing the improvement mod and still, in the Blacksquare analog edition the standby avionics bug is still there.

Didn’t notice yet, but I have to admit that I’ve never tried.

Sansa Airlines departing MRPJ in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica!

The first thing I do with any new aircraft is play around with the electrical system to see how “study level” it really is, especially if they provide an electrical schematic like Blacksquare does in their manual. All the breakers are there in working condition to isolate any of the buses. Those covered standby avionics switches were just asking to be tested. lol

Does anyone else use beta mode to slow the Cavavan down in flight? You can get it slowed down pretty good. Just be careful not to have it on for more than a few seconds, else you risk choking off the engine. lol This was becoming my primary means to slow the bird down before landing until I read how it wasn’t allowed IRL and was a dangerous thing to do. If it’s so dangerous, why isn’t there an interlock preventing us from using it? Or is there really one IRL but this is part of the “beta mode not fully implemented by the sim”? If so, you’d think Blacksquare could at least take a few ticks off my engine life for doing it. lol
