Ground textures are just gross, completely kills any sense of immersion.
So as of today’s update from Jorg, he said their servers are now working as expected. So are these blurry ground textures the new norm? I was hoping they would at least get to 2020 levels when the servers were up to snuff. I guess I’ll stick to 2020, total immersion killer.
The overall ground textures have been improving in the places I have been flying but PG has remained anywhere from just OK (Las Vegas) to terrible (Washington DC region). Today I was very surprised when I flew from Auckland down to Taraunga and found it looking nearly 80% as good as I had remembered:
I wondered if maybe it was due to similarity between season and when the PG appeared to have been collected so I ran an experiment by setting the month to May and checking Washington DC again but it was still really bad so I don’t think the seasonal overlay filter/routine is the main culprit.
I have no idea whats going on but I do remember Seb mentioning some routine they were working on for real time compression/decompression of textures and sometimes it ‘would chose the wrong’ layer or mip level or something. Maybe thats whats going on? Ill try and find the refernce.
Then my status is ■■■■ - always. Living in a modern country, with fiber 250/250. Something is so off here. Smeared ground textures destroys the immersion of this…thing of a game.
I wanted to test between the sims if there was a lower resolution but in fact, I think in some places, the terrain tile resolution are equivalent. This location is where I do most of my flying in both sims so all the highest quality assets should be cached. The top screenshot is MSFS 2020 and the bottom is MSFS 2024. Obviously the imagery is at different times but to me the resolution and sharpness is equal.
So at least the sim is capable of the same resolution and at least at this time, they are not limiting anything. This is at low level so does not say anything about the terrain at higher altitudes.
Yeah, this thread is fascinating.
I am not experiencing this issue, or at least my eyes are convinced things look sharper and more detailed (albeit a bit more cartoonish) than they did in 2020.
Some folks here were clearly having streaming issues early on, and some folks here are clearly just not fans of change and perceive a softness in the new visuals clarity that others do not perceive.
And it does look like some folks suffer from blurry textures, or incomplete texture downloads.
So many people reporting the same thing, but the photos don’t always show the same things. Some folks see blurry textures where others see more detail.
All in all, MSFS 2024 is looking better on my system than 2020 did, sharper. But there are some odd places that looked better to my eyes in 2020. And perhaps if you live in one of those places or something, you feel like this is a downgrade.
But as long as things are properly streaming, most of the world does look more detailed and textured. Or at least it should for everyone.
Have Quest Pro and vs 2020 it seems to have some sort of motion blur effect when moving headset to side views. motion blur is off in both sims. had to change VR controls back to 2020 bindings. the moving map is no longer viewable its now that EFB tab and I still cannot get it to be clickable with mouse pointer in VR. texture is bad at times even with all settings set to high. 2020 is tuned fine nowadays in VR for me.
I am experiencing shingle like texture effects especially if flying around mountains. the textures are square blocks as if they are trying to form the landscape, can see the lines and edges of them like they are tiles placed on a hillside. my settings are at ultra/high. yes I am getting blurry textures at times and rain/snow does not appear on windshields
That is often a sign of loading textures or incomplete data.
It also happened at times in 2020.
Not much we can do when it happens. Seems like it is on the server end.
Something to keep in mind, they changed the LOD system a lot. It’s more ‘agressive’ now and displays lower quality models and textures at closer distances. This is good for performance and if done correctly not noticeable (BTW one of the problems for 3rd party devs). Maybe that’s one of the causes for low resolution ground textures and needs a bit more tweaking.
Yeah, at close-to ground-level, the textures are OK, but as soon as you climb higher, the ground textures get pretty blurry and washed out.
I played a bit with the settings, and if you crank up “Terrain LOD” to 400 (Max.), then ist good. But anythings below that, is a step back from MSFS, even when MSFS is at much lower Terrain LOD settings.
I compared it, and MSFS at 150 LOD already gives MUCH sharper textures and more Ground details as FS24 at 100-200 LOD.
It looks like the LOD is very aggressive on the terrain textures.
I was just thinking much the same thing. I really don’t think this is a texture issue, but rather a change in how LOD is handled. And some people perceive blurriness with the new system where other folks filter it out or do not notice.
Yes, its definitely a LOD thing. Set it to 400 Terrain LOD and you can see sharp textures even at higher altitutes and far more in the distance.
Its not a server issue, as according to Jorgs statement:
“the simulator and the reliability is now above 99.999%. Our servers and services are also all performing as expected.”
Servers/Services are not an excuse anymore…
I think you are on to something. And if you use dynamic settings, you can just set and forget TLOD and OLOD to maximum and let the PC lower it whenever you aren’t able to hit your target FPS which might help some folks with this issue as 400 LOD will slow many systems in certain situations but works fine in others.
I use 200 in FS2020 and use to do 300/400 but got some FPS hit and hardly noticed a difference so went back to 200, my FS24 is at 200 should I be bumping that up for something?
Yep, personally, not a fan of “Dynamic Settings” as the sim then decides for me, which i just dont like, i prefer to balance visual fidelity with a performance that is OK for me, but in a sim, where immersion plays a big factor, i dont like to compromise visuals over highest possible FPS.
But thats me, on a decent system.
Bump it to 400 if you have Dynamic Settings turned on. It will adjust LOD lower for you as needed when you aren’t able to hit your target FPS.
I am on a minimum spec CPU so it is a godsend for me. And much smoother than similar 3rd party apps I used in 2020 to do the same thing. I almost never notice it is on. When my TLOD is lowered I am usually close to ground and not looking at the horizon.
And then I still hit 400 when flying over the desert or something.
It really works well. Like I almost never notice. And it makes FPS much more consistent.
I encourage folks to try it. If you can’t set it to 400 and forget it, this is a great way to get 400 whenever your system can handle it. Especially since folks are seeing blurring that is likely caused by how a lower LOD looks in 2024 compared to in 2020.
yeah, absolutely makes sense! I might give it a try.
I have such a slow CPU and an overpowered GPU so I almost always have to force a GPU bottleneck by running everything at ultra, or even super sampling.
LOD is the thing my system struggles with. That new dynamic feature helps my minimum spec CPU run like a mid spec CPU.
