Blurry ground textures in MSFS 2024 - what are your experiences?

For anyone looking to see the exact differences of every setting, including a percentual performance impact, this guy has done a tremendous job comparing every single setting:

In my case, Terrain LOD doesnt have such a heavy impact anymore as in MSFS, and the settings for Buildings, Trees etc. seem to change the LOD of the respective assets. So higher setting on Buildings, will increase Buildings distance.

The Terrain LOD is not THAT heavy on my system. But paired with others like trees, plants, buildings, yeah, it adds up quite a bit, especially at ground level at landing/takeoff.

I do think that video (awesome watch BTW) does show how low LOD causes blurring in 2024 in a way it didn’t in 2020, and that is likely what a LOT of folks are reporting when they say textures are blurry.

The LOD part of the video is at the very beginning so you do not need to watch the whole thing.

Truly fascinating how it can give the impression of blurry textures, but really it is missing elevation and geometry, making low LOD levels look… a bit blurry.

I do encourage folks who have this problem to play with dynamic settings, as you can bump that TLOD to maximum when your PC can handle it, which seems to solve that particular issue.

Can we talk a bit more about BLOOMING (!) It’s everywhere, ON PFD, MFD, Runway lights - and you cant change or turn it off!

Ouch, my eyes… (the auto brightness in the planes are not working either)

The square tiles I see in some areas

That looks like incomplete data from a server. To a degree it may just happen on occasion, but it should get better as the sim matures.

That can happen for several reasons so it isn’t entirely avoidable, but it should reduce as the sim matures, especially once the number of simultaneous players drops a little.

oh yeah, they just cranked Bloom to “Mega Ultra” with no chance to finetune or atleast just disable it. Same for the sunflares, which i have off in MSFS, as you dont see them with your eyes, its a Camera/Lens thing, not something someone would actually see IRL. But now ist just forced to ON.

I wish we had the option to turn those off, but lens flare especially does add dimension and a sense of where the light is, for flying in 2D. I find it does some of the work for me, not being able to turn my head or feel the sun.

In VR, well, I feel like I am wearing lenses and am the camera man so it never takes me out, but it doesn’t really help like it can in 2D.

On Xbox this step back is so drastic compared to MSFS 2020 I have uninstalled the new sim. All I do is low level GA flying and it’s not fit for purpose. A huge downgrade compared to MSFS 2020, with horrible stutters.

This is the biggest issue with msfs2024 currently, even tlod 400 doesn’t change anything I could see. I have 300mbits and whenever I move away from hills they get insanely blurry. My performance is great on the other hand. I’m afraid as soon as they fix the terrain this will have severe adverse effects on the performance

Thats kinda to be expectet, yes. I think they went with this aggressive LOD to keep Performance and VRAM usage manageable.

But overall, i really think the visual improvements are only made for ground level exploring and low flight levels. For the upper airspaces, its more a degradation compared to MSFS. And MSFS doesnt even look better up there, it performs twise as good on my System…

For me it was very clear, that this new Sim would have a hard time to live up on the visual part on Consoles. Its even pushing the best PC-Hardware to the limits.

Nothing against consoles, nothing against peoples asking for improvements on consoles. But unfortunately, Consoles are a bit limited in multiple ways and Developers are forced to downgrade things to make it a stable and decently performing experience.

But i fully agree, some Xbox videos i have seen, are horrible.

I mean, MS/Asobo is even recommending to NOT use some of the more advanced Aircraft that come with the sim, on console.

There is an issue with Xbox and MSFS that is awaiting a hardware patch fix from MS before Asobo can do what they want.

And it is killing LOD. On 2020 too.

LOD is just handled a little differently in 2024.

I actually think the dynamic settings are lowering the quality of the images. Can anyone check on their side to see if it impacts it too ?

I tried so many graphics settings but that’s what I get 99% of the time:

They literally lower the quality of the image when your settings impact FPS. Mainly LOD. That is the whole purpose of the setting.

I get blurry items too. Why can’t Jorg specifically comment on this and many other items vs continuing to hype praise on server resolution when it’s not the case for some people

yeah so that might be a solution for some of the poeple having blurry textures

Yeah, Ive been thinking about this too. Did not anybody at ms / Asobo react to this?

I have everything set to Ultra, with terrain LOD at 200. I tried with the dynamic FPS enabled and disabled, and it makes no difference. Raising the LOD to 400 improves the quality, but it is still well below the terrain texture resolution of MFS2020 at 200.

Xbox doesn’t have this option to adjust stuff
