Built in Benchmark

I think we need a standard benchmark built in the game to compare different settings on different setups. A standard benchmark would be useful for objective comparisons

Hi team - firstly thank you for developing this amazing game. Just incredible what you’ve achieved.

I was wondering if it is likely there will be a benchmark option (if there isn’t one already) in the video settings at some stage in the future? It would be handy when trying to tweak the graphic settings.

Thanks!

This would be a great addition indeed!

It would make the job a lot easier for those who benchmark several different hardware configurations and the results would be a lot more consistent as well.

It would be Marvelous! :hugs:

Great idea! And it shouldn’t be too hard for the Developers to implement this.

Many modern games have a built-in benchmarking tool to provide consistency. The goal of this thread is to try to remove as many inconsistencies as possible between users. There are some steps to follow before running a benchmark:

  • Go to settings, reset all to default, then switch the preset to your desired preset. Leave all other settings. Restart flight simulator.
  • Close all other intensive applications.
  • Go to the world map, load this benchmark file, select the benchmark aircraft, set cruising altitude to the correct altitude for your benchmark, leave all weight and balance as default
  • Set time to the time of the benchmark
  • Turn all traffic off
  • Set weather to Clear Skies
  • Start flight, and enable all 3 AI control sliders
  • Benchmark starts when the plane takes off, ends when plane touches down
  • Use FPS counter from DevMode in the game. Unfortunately there is no way to log it, but other counters show different numbers than this counter. For now, we’ll just have to eyeball it

Use the following format to report results (credit to Ryanosaurs13 for the original benchmark post):
GPU: RX 5700 XT Flash,
Monitor: ASUS VG249 1080p 144Hz
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 OC @ 4.3 GHz
RAM: 32Gb OC @ 3600MHz CL16
Settings: Ultra
Benchmark: SB1
Average Frames: 22fps, occasional lag spikes, GPU limited

The SB1 benchmark is a simple flight over New York City.
Download and import the Flight Plan from https://nextcloud.technophilus.net/s/A3KmkBHqscEzWsQ
The information for this benchmark is as follows:

  • 1500 feet cruising altitude
  • Time 1600Z
  • Aircraft: Cessna 172 (G1000)

By popular demand, the SB1N benchmark is a simple flight over New York City at night.
Download and import the Flight Plan from SB1
The information for this benchmark is as follows:

  • 1500 feet cruising altitude
  • Time 0400Z
  • Aircraft: Cessna 172 (G1000)

The SB2 benchmark is a lighter flight over Utah.
Download and import the flight plan from https://nextcloud.technophilus.net/s/Nxaoc6pbSFqqQdT
The information for this benchmark is as follows:

  • 7200 feet cruising altitude
  • Time 1800Z
  • Aircraft: Cessna 172 (G1000)

Feel free to post new benchmarks in this thread!

Here is my first benchmark run:
GPU: RX 5700 XT Reference,
Monitor: LG 4k 60hz
CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x PBO
RAM: 32Gb OC @ 3200mhz
Settings: High
Benchmark: SB1
Average Frames: 22fps, smooth, GPU limited

Still lot’s of variable such as:
-gpu settings in Nvidia control panel and Amd equivalent.
-Windows power option choice
-Internet connection speed and quality
-Maybe whether rolling cache is running.
-type and speed of storage device.

Yeah, unfortunately that is the case. These external variables affect any game benchmark, I’m just trying to get as close as possible to the “benchmark” option in other games.

Might I suggest duplicating the flight plan and benchmarks for a Standard Benchmarks NIGHT to go along with this info? The difference between day/night flying in terms of performance is significant enough that I have to make changes to my gfx settings to fly at night. I think it would be helpful to see the comparison of how different hardware performs when the city lights come on.

i tested at 12 am that should be midnight

Good point. I’ll be making more benchmarks later. A desert benchmark is planned.
