Hi,
I am looking for a second hand computer for MSFS 2020 and I also want to be able to use it for MSFS 2024.
The graphics are very important for me, so i want to be able to use the ultra settings on 4k screen with a lot of add ons/mods.
Do you think the system requirements for 2024 will be much higher than 2020?
Will a RTX 3090 be good enough?
and what kind of CPU is good enough? Whats most important, clock speed, amount of cores or amount of threads?
I don’t know If you already have experience with MSFS but I would recommend a 40 series graphics Card. Frame Generation makes a huge difference. Also a decent CPU.
My Setup is a13900ks @ 5,6 GHz (single core clock speed is key!!) an rtx4090. While nowhere near cheap (even second hand If you might be able to find one) i do Not regret it.
I swapped my 3090ti for the 4090, because i’m also a graphics*"&€24_! and the 3090 didn’t cut it for me.
3440x1440 (upscaled to 2150p) Everything on ultra, tlod 300, fsltl live traffic and so on and so forth, FPS never drop below the 60 mark and latency never rises above 30ms no matter the scenario. If you can afford it i think it will even hold Up to fs24, but of course nobody knows what the requirements for that one will be…i would however assume a more refined code compared to 2020
A Video i made, Just so you get the Idea …
Regards

Hi,
Thank you.
Of course 4090 is the best video card, but does it really add more quality? I mean, if you can use ultra settings on 4k with a 3090 and remain above 40 fps, you cant really go much higher I think?
4090 will be too expensive for my budget.

First, I think with 2024 coming out, and most people chomping at the bit, I would wait on PC for now. Second, summer is mostly doldrums for PC sales, but fall things pickup, and new stuff is released for the Xmas Season. Third, I just did buy new PC and I pushed it out to current Top of the Line hardware. Why, it will play xplane, FSX, MSFS 2020, and 2024 (if I choose to give MS more money) just fine. I had the money, who knows what the fall/next year is going to bring, prices so high I cannot afford it.
But, BIG BUT, everyone is different, save money, wait till late fall, or even next year to see what if any requirements are for 2024 and what new hardware is out.
The technical requirements for 2024 have not been released, and mostly I don’t care, not sure going to purchase it, sure not on release day. It may take a supercomputer to run. My suggestion is to wait, or bite down on wallet now and get the best possible hardware for your $$$ now and hopefully close enough you can run all of them next year.
NO one can make this decision for you, and what we say, may not fit with budget and desires.
Personal Comments and Observations
Given Moore’s Law (which I realize is now actually too slow), I’d personally wait to see what the box required specs are and then if you can’t get in the Alpha/Beta (I’m assuming there is one, no insider knowledge for me) - wait for the first reviews to see how gutsy a machine and Net Connection you really need.

I guess that makes sense with regard to msfs 2024 and that title appeals to me more than 2020, because of better world graphics and missions.
But do you guys have any educated guess to when we may expect information on system requirements for msfs 2024? They already said it probably wont be released in the first half of next year.
And I would really like to already start exploring msfs 2020 instead of waiting for months or even a year to know more about msfs 2024’s system requirements

2024 should be a different experience compared to 2020 because of CPU multithreading. You may end up getting better performance with a 3090 on 2024 than on 2020. 3090 vs 4090 may not be that big of a deal except for $$$. So, if you can wait for the initial impressions, you will be better informed on your decision. No-one here can really give you solid answer.

I dont think i want to wait buying a good pc for months or more, because i want to use it for other things as well and start with msfs 2020 while waiting for 2024.
So maybe i should look into cpu more than, not just relying on single thread performance, but looking for a cpu with a high amount of cores and threads?

Definitely look at CPU/MB specs and support for high-speed memory. If you get everything you need now it would just be an easy swap if you decide on a better GPU later. You could then sell the old GPU to the next person. I swapped out my I9 12K and 3090 for a i9 13k and 4090 2 months back.

I9 13K and 4090 would be the dream.
I saw a pc with:
Ryzen 5950X (16 cores, 32 threads, clockspeed 3.4 Ghz, 4.9 Ghz Turbo, cache levels 1, 8, 64 mb)
Rtx 4070 12GB
32gb ddr4
Nvme ssd
This might be in my budget range and I think is pretty good, also for 4k ultra settings?
Above 40 FPS didn’t Work for me, even with the ti-version 3090 on 2k. I think for MSFS a 4080 or even 4070 would do fine. But i would Not use a 30series Card.
I would wait! I have a 12900KF with 3090 and I can only fly at smaller airport stutter free using Ultra settings. No AI traffic as they introduce lots of stutters! I spent about $5k buying this system last year just for MSFS to be disappointed. I don’t care about FPS, I care about the smoothness. The Sim is not optimized, any money you spend will almost for sure disappoint you and who knows what MSFS 2024 will need! Let them at least optimize DX12!

Given that MSFS2024 will run on current Xbox Series S and X I doubt it will be much harder on the system than MSFS2020. Might even be easier if they get proper multithreading working?

any AMD x3d CPU will crash all the intel processors in MSFS !
the x3d cache is great for msfs, it benefits a lot.
if you do not fly VR then why a 4090 nvidia. dont see a reason. i have AMD 6900xt and good frame rates in directx 12.
I don’t have a 4K monitor, but I can upscale my image to 4K internally on my 3090, and I see very little change in frame rate. Usually around 42FPS on the ramp at EGLC. Gain a little altitude and this increases to over 50, which is really good considering London photogrammetry.
Simply get the absolute best you can afford, prioritising where you can an RTX 4th gen GPU, and a heavily gaming optimised CPU. The CPU should have high single thread capability or AMD 3D v-cache, both of these MSFS is proven to really love.
Personally in the last few years, and with MSFS, I have played in 4K and VR on both a Ryzen 5900X with a Radeon GPU, switching more recently to a Intel 13900KS and RTX4090. I have been building computers for 20 years now and must say despite a few dabbles into the AMD world, I am far happier with my latest Intel and nVidia build. It’s rock solid stable and the performance is staggeringly good. I had too many weird gremlins and issues with Ryzen and Radeon so won’t be going back there.

And if you search for games with graphical issues, 9 times out of 10 it will be an AMD GPU being the cause, or rather the drivers. MSFS has a vertical striping effect in clouds for some AMD users, or example.

Ryzen 7 5800x 3D 32Gb 3200Mhz Asus RTX3070Ti

VR Quest 2 alla VR MSFS Parameters High or Ultra solid 36 FPS
Be happy !
I’ve read somewhere that graphics engine in FS24 will be 5 times faster/more efficient.
Does it mean I won’t need better GPU than my GTX 1080 for screen?
Hi, single thread capability, is that shown in the clock speed of the cores?
is a 4070 better than an 3090? I see different outcomes from benchmarks on that.
