California smoke - non existent!

Just watched Jerry Wagner’s latest video on youtube - look at all that smoke in California from the fires! Almost zero visibility between Auburn and Oakland. Loaded up live weather in the sim to replicate his flight. Totally clear, no haze or anything. Clouds are working, live weather is working (apart from winds!) - so not a live weather issue, just seems like another thing not working properly is low visibility.

Is it worth reporting to Zen Desk or is it a case of just forget it, not going to happen?

Please say you’re trolling.

Why exactly would he be trolling? Smoke shows up on radar, affects visibility, and is reported by METAR. Why should it not show up in live weather?

:man_facepalming:

No! As it happens I’m doing the flight anyway, just currently over SAC!

I thought it would probably render some sort of haze layer or cloud or something. Anyway, I guess my expectations were probably too high.

Sorry you thought I was trolling! I don’t understand the technicalities of how the weather is generated but I thought I had a legitimate question.

Here is the smokeless California sky!

Yes you are right there is no representation of smoke in the simulator. It would be nice to have that modeled, but I do not think Asobo put that in the weather generation. But I will say however, with X-Plane 11 using active sky XP they do have a sense of model representing the smoke as fog.
Down here where I live in hell (known as Southern California). We here in the high desert of no Northern L.a. County are getting the smoke left and right (metaphorically speaking of course), and again active sky for XP is modeling it. When I leave my home base at KWJF Lancaster, California. It’s so thick in X-Plane that you can barely see the 7000 foot end of the runway. I was also using the freeware volumetric clouds plugins which enhance the effect.
Switched over to sky Max Pro, and of course that affect went away. Just the way goes I guess.

Fair enough :+1:

might be the best place to look for what to expect in SIM as this is essentially where FS2020 pulls its data from.

Good to know, thank you for that. Cheers Dion

Thanks for the link and the info.

Thanks, I’ve never used X-plane, I hope FS2020 catches up to it in some areas, with some of the upcoming patches. All the best.

People are dying, losing their homes. And people are complaining they cant see the smoke. Unbelievable. Worst thread ever. Close it down.

My apologies, no offence was intended.

I have tried to delete it but I don’t have permission, so perhaps a moderator could do so. Thanks.
