Camera zoom level increment

Q: Is this a dupe?
A: I did a search using word “zoom" and couldn’t find a topic like this.

Q: Why?
A: View distance feels limited compared to other sims. I’ve felt multiple times need for more zoom, for example when checking out the wind sock. This would be a quality of life (QOL) improvement.

Q: How?
A: Increase maximum zoom level. Perhaps add a

Max zoom level

and

Reset zoom

hotkey/keybinding settings into the menus.

Q: Sim version?
A: PC, Top Gun DLC.

I’ve seen the wind sock issue come up before. It’s not just a matter of zoom distance but also animation distance.

I noticed the white wind turbines view/animation distance is quite far compared to airport objects. That doesn’t make much sense for a flight simulator.

There is no other wish for this, so I’m not going to merge it anywhere. However, to HethrMasn’s point, there is another Wishlist topic out there that might address what you’re looking for:

Change camera zoom to properly zoom and not just enlarge

The current zoom function on all cameras acts as an enlarge function and does not actually zoom the image. Can this be changed so that the image is redrawn as if the camera viewpoint has actually been moved towards the area being zoomed in on? This would mean that additional infomation and detail will be added to the zoomed image. Currently zooming in doesn’t add any new information to the image - it simply makes the existing image larger. At long distances, this means that LOD, drawing/renderi…

The animation issue is like Asgarmagol said. The distance to the non-animated state of the windsock is ridiculous short. You can change that yourself by increasing the corresponding value in the windsock.xml file found here (MS store installation): X:\Users\XXX\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Official\OneStore\asobo-simobjects-landmarks\SimObjects\Landmarks

However, this only solves the animation issue. Another issue is the draw distance of the windsocks.
The draw distance is too way to short, so windsocks are generally first drawn in when really close to them. At Whitman Regional Airport (KOSH) you can’t even see the windsocks at the end of the runways when you are parked at the runway midpoint.

I haven’t found a solution for the very small draw distance. I would like to know too.

And yes, the windsocks doesn’t really reflect real world winds at least in the US, but that’s probably because of the weather being broken there in general. Haven’t really tested it other places.

Surprisingly, this doesn’t seem to bug a lot of people in here.

This DistanceToNotAnimate for wind turbines is 7500 versus 2000 for windsocks…
