Cannot download mandatory update

Hi @ITDreamFly this is the issue we’ve been facing out-of-date instructions  - we’ve not been told you also need the Xbox App… I’m guessing you were one of the lucky few who had it installed already.

[DaRealGretel] … Life saver! Thanks.

Indeed, I had the Xbox app already installed because of MSFS from a while back.
Can not exactly remember why I installed it in the past for MSFS.
However, I am glad that a solution was found.

Yes to Windows..I don’t have an XBox only the PC version so don’t need that do I ?

I had that problem yesterday, and I think going to the menus somehow solved it, but yes it’s a bug.

Yes to other Apps I never use but no Flight Simulator shows in the list

Yes for this update you do, it’s the XBox App for Windows 10

Hi everyone,

Since yesterday I can’t play MSFS on my Windows 10 Desktop. Upon launching the Sim a box appears stating that “A new mandatory update is available. Update the sim on the Microsoft Store…”.
The problem is that when I browse and search through the MS Store I do not find any option to download and install this update.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Miguel

Mod edit:

I can’t play the game either, the same thing happens to me

tampoco puedo reproducir el juego, me pasa lo mismo

This has been covered a couple of times, but the consensus among Store users is that you now have to install the free Xbox app (also from the Store).

Once that’s installed, run it and sign in with the same credentials you use for the sim, but it should pick up your cred’s and sign you in automatically.
Once signed in, the Xbox app should show your sim in the left bar. Launch it from there, and it should go normally:
Sim launches and then says go to the store.
Store launches - go to updates and get the core files update from there.
Make sure your Community folder is either moved or renamed.
Restart your rig for good measure.
Go get your favorite “beverage.”
Launch the sim and install the big update.
Once that’s done and you’re on the Home screen, be sure to get the actual WU6 package from the Marketplace, then head to the Content manager to update the previous WU packages and anything else that might be waiting.

It worked. If only Microsoft could post that it is a necessary thing to do, then life would be much easier…

Got this resolved by starting the game from the Xbox app and then going to the Microsoft Store. I already had the Xbox App, Windows fully updated, launching the game directly or as admin asked me to go to the store and couldn’t download it, launched from the store and same issue, restarted my pc and tried all the above steps and same issue. Finally launched the Xbox app, launched the game from within the Xbox app it again asked me to update but this time the update started on the Microsoft Store. The underlying issue seems to be with the Xbox app, MS Store and MSFS integrations.

Thanks, it worked. If only Microsoft didn’t let the users on their own so many times…

Honestly, it shouldn’t be the case that a user has to go to a non-obvious fix (downloading an Xbox app when I’m using a Windows machine) and has to consult a “forum” in order to discover this. It seems that whoever put the instruction on the screen to go to the Microsoft Store should put the additional instruction about downloading an Xbox app. But then again, I’m just a user and not a maker of software.

Appreciate that you marked this solved. Thank-you.

Updates are always to the base package in the Store or XBox app. Once you have completed the update, simply go to the Content Manager ingame and download the Premium or Deluxe update as additional content. This has always been the process.

Thanks. Sorry to be a bit dim but exactly how do I get the X Box App ?

True, I don‘t think they intended this at all. It‘s probably one of the many sloppy things recently. In my case the xbox app didn‘t help either and I had to do completely messed up things which I rather did accidentally searching for anything that worked. Namely I did what I always do if my sim doesn‘t start and removed the game services from the registry. Normally the store redownloads them but not this time. I was redirected between the sim and the gaming services that were not there but shown as installed. Probably I made a mistake somewhere. Funny enough I found help in a thread in this forum from August 2020 that shared a powershell command and suddenly gaming services AND update worked.

No problem.

In the MS Store App enter XBox in the search.
Select XBox App from the results
Click install

This is really annoying. Why do I now need to download an XBOX app to install a PC game. It started the update and errored, when I tried again it installed the update but when I started the ‘simulator’ it proceeded to reinstall 117GB.

I hope Asobo isn’t going to be treating the loyal PC user, who bought the game and have supported it for the past year, as 2nd fiddle to the XBOX user who it looks like were their target audience all along
