Cannot get online with new sim router

I have just changed from a broadband router to a 4G+ sim router. I get a much improved speed through the sim, and the connection is solid. Only problem is that I can no longer get online with MSFS / XboxLive. All relevant online services are greyed out.

Can anyone help me out here? The new router is an Archer MR600. I have seen people report that they have MSFS working via that box, so that in itself shouln’t be the issue (but I might be wrong).

Nothing has changed with my firewall settings, which worked fine with the old broadband router, and which opens all ports for both MSFS and Xbox Live.

So perhaps it is down to the sim service provider? I am using Talkmobile in the UK. It appears that they offer a Class A private IP connection. The router shows an ip address starting 10.151. WhatsMyIP shows an ip address starting 148.252.

I don’t know/understand what I am actually talking about, but online research suggests that this could be the cause, and that what I need is a fixed public ip address. I don’t think UK sim providers offer this service (except as a specialist service at a specialist price!).

So, am I on the right tracks here, and am I perhaps going to have to go back to a fixed broadband service to solve this little issue?

A fixed public IP address is also called a static IP, and it’s normally purchased and used in corporate networks. You do not need it for your home network.

The 10.151.xxx.xxx address is your dynamic public IP address. This is what the outside world sees when it sees your router. Your router then uses NAT (Network Address Translation) to give the devices on your LAN (Local Area Network) private IP addresses that are not visible to the outside world unless traffic is port-forwarded to them. Your 148.252.xxx.xxx address is one of those internal private IP addresses.

Try this first:

Resetting the network stack

Note that these commands affect all of your networking adapters, both physical and virtual, both used and unused, so you will see some errors when running these commands, where the resets targeted adapters that are not being used. These errors are perfectly normal, and not a cause for concern. Complete each step in order, even if you have done some of these previously, and even if you encounter errors.

  1. In the search box on the taskbar click Start, type CMD, right-click the command prompt result and then select Run as administrator and confirm.
  2. At the command prompt (decline restarting your machine until you have entered the final command):
  3. Type ipconfig /release and press Enter.
  4. Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.
  5. Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter. (This will stall for a moment.)
  6. Type netsh int ip reset and press Enter. (Don’t restart yet.)
  7. Type netsh winsock reset and press Enter.
  8. Now restart your machine using Start > Power > Restart once more and test to see if the issue is resolved.

If that doesn’t help, consider submitting a ticket to TalkMobile describing the problem. They may have an answer.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I’ve run through your instructions, but nothing has changed. And I have earlier today contacted Talkmobile, but the support team could not help in any way.

Does anyone want to buy a control yoke and throttle (only joking, at this stage!).

I’m stuck as to where to go next. Do I need to enter some port-forwarding into my router?

You said your firewall settings haven’t changed. Are you talking about Windows Firewall? Indeed there’s no reason for those to have changed on their own.

I don’t know why you’d need to do any manual port forwarding.

But perhaps the new router has its own firewall that is somehow blocking traffic between the sim and your ISP. Can you turn it off in the router? If so, that would be a good test to help identify where the problem lies.

You can also temporarily turn off the Windows firewall as a test. Be sure to re-enable it.

I think you have those ranges backwards. The 10.x range is the internal private one, and rhe 148.x address is the external IP of the router which is what the website is seeing.

https://www.google.com/search?q=ip+private+ranges&rlz=1CDGOYI_enGB687GB695&oq=ip+private+ranges&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyCQgAEEUYORiABDIICAEQABgWGB4yCAgCEAAYFhgeMggIAxAAGBYYHjIICAQQABgWGB4yCAgFEAAYFhgeMggIBhAAGBYYHjIICAcQABgWGB4yCAgIEAAYFhgeMggICRAAGBYYHtIBCDY4MjhqMGo3qAIAsAIA4gMEGAEgXw&hl=en-GB&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

Address ranges to be use by private networks are:

  • Class A: 10.0. 0.0 to 10.255. 255.255.
  • Class B: 172.16. 0.0 to 172.31. 255.255.
  • Class C: 192.168. 0.0 to 192.168. 255.255.

My Windows firewall is Norton 360. I have tried turning it off - no difference.
I also tried turning off my router firewall -no difference.

I’m still confused as to whether I might need to enter port-forwarding info or not.

I don’t do any port forwarding. It’s not necessary with a stateful firewall. The client opens the connections going out, and the data comes back on that session.

My internal private ip is yet another, starting 192.168.

Why is this all so confusing. I’m getting such a headache!

Right, so that could be the issue, and you are doing double NAT. You might need to put one of your devices into bridged mode, or modem mode, rather than act like a router.

Can you lay out again all the hardware between your sim computer, and the Internet please?

Double NAT??? That’s way above my pay-grade.

I’ve just checked again.
WhatsMyIP says my public IPv4 starts 148.252.
My router says the network gateway starts 10.151 (with a subnet of 255.255.255.128).
MY own internal network starts192.168.1.

I only have the one router in my system, the Archer MR600 sim router.

But I get the same problems if I connect my pc to my mobile phone hotspot, bypassing the router altogether. Of course, the mobile phone uses a similar sim on Talkmobile.

192.168.x.x is a private address. That would typically assigned to an users computer/tablet/phone, and so on.

How do you you know your router’s IP address is 10.151.x.x?

So to clarify, you have:

Computer —> Archer MR600 ----> Internet

And the router is the only device? If you were to open a Command Prompt, and type “ipconfig”, is the default gateway listed the 10.151.x.x address or something else? It should be “something else” as you can’t have your 192.168.x.x. machine using a 10.151.x.x address as its gateway.

So something else on your network has to be translating you 192.168.x.x address to the 10.151.x.x address. Are you connecting to it wirelessly? It’s possible that your LAN, and wireless networks are different.

Those DNS servers look odd too.

Feel free to DM me any information you don’t want on open forum.

I suppose it’s possible your ISP could be doing something odd like using that 10.x range on it’s internal network, but that seems doubtful.

For the record, both my old, and new firewall setup were like this, and it works just fine.

Computer -----> Firewalla Gold -----> Broadband modem (acting as router)

I’m pretty sure I am using double NAT also, once between my computer and the firewall, and again between the firewall, and the modem.

Hi.
The sim may be forced offline.
Check the settings in the sim:

In the Welcome screen click Options/General Options/Data.
Under Data Connection set all 6 items to ON maybe except Live Real-World Air Traffic. Set that to OFF to save bandwidth.
Save settings and go back to the Welcome screen.

Click your user name in the top right corner, status should say Online and Multiplayer Servers should show a connected server.

Not so? Restart by clicking the button Sign Out.

Good shout, I guess that is possible.

Yes, let’s indeed start there

I don’t have enough knowledge to challenge the dns server values, nor the 10.151 address. They are the values that come up when i put the simcard into the router.

I’m sure (I think) that the problem does not actually lie with the router, because its the same when I use my phone hotspot.

That, by my reckoning, leaves only the simcard / network provider. Talkmobile said that their network does not provide support for routers. Does that have some hidden message that means more than what it appears to mean?

From a practical point-of-view, I get an excellent data connection. All devices connect by wifi to the router, and everything APART from msfs works fine.

Under Data Connection, all 6 items are greyed out. and I also get:

which is the clue that I am not connecting to some server or other.

All pretty bog standard stuff. The internal IP of your Archer MR600 is 192.168.1.1.

…and I have signed out and back in many times!

The internal IP of your Archer MR600 is 192.168.1.1. Yes, I am fairly ok with setting up that side of the system.

Of the Xbox app specifically?
