CAS J3 Cub *Released 6/13/24* *Marketplace Release 9/12/24*

I remember back in 1980s, sitting on runway at Glasgow Airport trying to take off in an L4 cub and left brake wouldnt release, just sat there going round in circles with air traffic and the pilot of a tristar asked me to leave the runway,

Ended up getting out aircraft and me and my friend lifting wheel off ground enough to push clear,

I had to jump on this release, and I’m really blown away. The startup process is wonderful, the ability to open the engine and check the oil dipstick is awesome, the flight model feels great, and I love the passenger up front moving around as the plane moves. Sounds are great too. It really blows away every other Cub, and I can’t believe how cheap it is.

My only niggle is my trim axis is reversed. Hope that gets fixed.

As long as they drastically improve on the existing attempts, I don’t mind that at all. To be honest, coming from the A2A Cub I didn’t even bother with the BT and Flight Replicas attempts. This one, however, is a Must-Have for me.

Same with the Spitfires, coming from the A2A Spitfire the FlyingIron one was the only one coming even close.

In fact it would be terrible if we would be stuck on a mediocre rendition of an iconic aircraft forever, just because some barebones release was first.

Absolutely phenomenal. It’s one of the very, very few planes in the sim that I’d change nothing about. I’m impressed with the features you get, lending themselves to a plane with real personality. The closest analog I can think of is the Ant’s Tiger Moth though this has features even it doesn’t have.

Into the meat of it, the sounds are excellent, the flight model superb, and the extra toys right down to the ability to nudge the passenger out of the way are the icing on the cake. Do you like options? It has options. Want clean or dirty liveries? It has both.

Really, I can’t speak highly enough about this Cub. It’s a must-have

Just done my first couple of short hops and WOW this thing is really amazingly good.

I especially like that I can brain my cat if he gets annoying!

I was probably in too strong a wind for this plane really, so it’s a challenge on landing but in a good way.

One weird thing is when I shut the fuel off, the engine kept running. Maybe the wind was not letting the prop fully stop so it kept the strokes alive?
Even clicking Cold & Dark on the tablet and the engine kept idling after I landed.

Anyway this plane is a beauty! Is this CAS’s first product in any sim? Certainly a dev to look out for.

It’s quite possibly just very well modelled. The J3 isn’t especially thirsty and it would take it a little while to idle through what was in the fuel line. The quickstart PDF says that the fuel cutoff valve is very rarely used and I think I also read that in a real J3 POH.

The engine should be shut off by setting the magnetos to ‘OFF’. Shutting the engine off with the fuel cutoff will empty the carburettor bowl, making restarting the engine challenging. Additionally, it can be difficult to fully open the valve once shutoff without manually aligning the cable.

Something new I found today is the interactive refueling. From the tablet menu you can select to load-up a can of fuel which will be placed next to the aircraft. From there you must move yourself out of the cockpit where you can open the fuel cap, place the funnel, haul the fuel can to the top of the cowling, and then once there you can tip the fuel can to add fuel to the fuel tank (which it does).

if you look at your engine page on your tablet after you shut off the fuel line you’ll see the amount of fuel in the carburetor going down. the engine will eventually die once it’s starved of fuel but this is just one more little thing on this plane that’s so epic…

the only thing better than the modeling here is the programming. This package is pretty amazing, especially considering the price point.

I’ll have another proper go soon but I left it for a good few mins and it never stopped. My Logitech switch panels physical magneto switch does not work with this aircraft it seems. And I could not see the Magneto in cockpit so I used the fuel shut off at the left side above head. Also was not sure how to turn off (or on in fact) the avionics. Again the default Logitech switches don’t do anything, so I think the flight was not logged when I quit. At least, I did not get the little spinning wheel whilst it’s writing to the log book

Of course, I need to RTFM and/or have a better look around so no worries yet! I am sure it’s user error.

Actually… where is the manual?

I played around with the tablet, filling it with fuel, and smoke started pouring from the engine, even being blown by the wind. The engine want even running though. Not sure what happened there.

The previous cubs in the simulation are very poor representations of the real aircraft. As a teenager flew in cubs quite a bit and the Asobo cub is not even close. Best was the A2A cub in FSX and the CAS Cub is right up there with that classic. Trying to compare this Cub to the default Asobo is comparing apples to pickles in my book. I would not even consider them duplicates in anything but name to be fair.

That’s because even though the Zlin Savage Cub steals borrows the rough design and even the name it’s not a Piper Cub. It’s a Cub derivative from another aircraft manufacturer altogether. They didn’t just spell “Piper” wrong when it said “Zlin”.

I mean to be fair the CubCrafters and Zlin cubs are significantly modified versions of the same design. Not saying I assume those are ‘study level’ by any means, but also they are definitely not just J3 Cubs even though the Zlin really looks like one.

Thanks for this review of available features. There are also video previews on YT to give an idea of the sound, flight model etc. This is a well made addon and a passion project. I’m not a huge fan of the Cub (a little to slow) but buying it to support the dev. Even if not a fan there is no doubt the addon will give plenty of good times.

THIS! Where is the manual? Does the dev have a website where we could download the manual from?

All I could find was this on their Discord. Not sure if there is meant to be something more than a Quick Guide but this does seem to cover everything.

I put it on my Dropbox for anyone that wants it without using Discord, but if I need to remove it hopefully Chris will let me know and give us a link instead.

Oooh, I think this Cub would be right up my alley! (Stares anxiously at my wallet)

It’s been a long wait for a module that does the real-life legend justice.

Does anyone know if this will be available from other vendors? If it comes to a vendor that doesn’t use those silly installer apps I might hold my horses a little while longer, otherwise I’m probably going to take the plunge pretty soon!

Wow, this plane is amazing! Agree with all the praise written here. Cannot believe this is a first release from CAS. So many little details. Even the passenger implementation is really good. Quite tricky to land with the person in front of you!

The CAS J-3 is an absolute must-have for anybody who likes small propeller planes!
