Cessna 172 steering on ground impossible

Nice to see you again ! Missed you !

C 172 steering

Hi CAP1077 ,
I have the same or similar problem on my PC, - since a long, long time.
I guess I need a 20 t 30 m radius to turn around in calm weather.
I just did not do it, only asked myself why Asobo did not fix it.

Thanks for addressing this issue !!

Bye, walter

Hi Walter,

I ask myself the same question, why this plane have not been fixed yet?
The c172 is a very popular aircraft in the sim.

Thanx  hope to post more often once MSFS2024 is out and offers significant improvements in the simulation part of the game!

Same issue here. I dont have rudder pedals so at times it’s impossible to get the plane turned. The WB Sims mod (payware) fixes it but it should be correct in the stock Asobo plane as well. This should be an easy quick fix.

It should be the easiest fix of the all considering the 172 Steam is fine.

The Wb-Sim C172 in MSFS is quite capable of sharp controlled turn, including turning on one Braked wheel.

You need RUDDER and independent BRAKE controls (as you would in RL ) to achieve this.

Asobo should fix this in the Default C172s

Does the problem happen with both versions of the C172: G1000 (standard) & steam gauge (deluxe) ? or just with one ?

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

yes…when the current conditions of wind at 16-19 knots. I have realism set at medium.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

ive had to circle to the right to get moving to eventually turn left on a taxiway.

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

Have you tried turning your ailerons into the wind while taking, the 172, doesn’t like crosswinds, even in taxi. This will help keeping the aircraft stable while taxining

Yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

Flew it in winds of 21 knots, almost impossible to steer even with correct yoke inputs for the crosswinds.

This issue has been discussed quite a lot in the past.If yuo do a search in the forum you’ll find many posts that explain why this happen. This is one of them:

Did you try differential breaking?

If you want more control on steering on the ground i recommend to take a look to this topic

Easy to edit but backup copy original before editing, also uncheck in properties of the file to “uncheck the read only”, for edits will not hold if read only is checked.

Personally i upped the friction scalar from 1.0 to 1.2 and this seems to me to get some more grip on the runway.

That does no good for those of us on xbox

That is so true and unfortunatly for xbox users, but i hope asobo and microsoft can find some time to see if they can fill in this simple modification for this serious problem so that on xbox some handlings, could be done by them for xbox users can have there fun with live windy conditions.

Had the same problem for a long time and in my case it was the toe braking that caused the problem. Have to admit that the handling is not correct compared with C172 on xplane. I have tried a workaround as described in the following post:

Fixed in SU 15 Sim Update

So now it’s no longer “impossible” to steer the C172 on the ground, but the way it does steer is very very far from realistic – but yes, maybe one could consider it i no longer “impossible”, but has become very possible to roll the plane onto a wing in all but the gentlest turn .

This is really weird as I don’t think anything need to be fixed. The C172 has approx 10° of steering which seems to be correctly implemented in the game. If you want more steering you have to apply differential braking (left or right) to get max 30° of steering. This works perfectly in the game.

There the excerpt of the section 7 of the 172 POH:

There is nothing wrong with the current C172, what the hell did Asobo fix???
