Cessna 172M/N

About the opportunity to have a Cessna 172M in MSFS…

As some may know, I’ve worked a lot the past few years building C172 mods. I ended up building a complete cockpit panel and interior to match older variants of Skyhawks like the Cessna 172 Reims Rocket / Hawk XP II (freeware)

It appears there is some demand for an intermediate variant like the 172M with older cockpit. It wouldn’t take much effort on my part, as much of the work has already been done.

For once, we could discuss here the choices to be made to bring this mod to life, as there are slight variations between the 172M models throughout their history.

EDIT: Added N to the title, as this variant is just as eagerly awaited as the M variant.

Exterior plane shape looks very very close to the one we got in MSFS.

The nose offers various options :

For the simplicity of livery making, it would be better to choose one of them

Many thanks Bagolu for your aircraft.

I vote for second one (blue aircraft)

Thanks a lot for considering the 172M!

In my opinion I like the 2nd photo more

The blue one for me, too, thanks.

I would love a c172N too! I’ve got over 70hrs in that bird

I am really upset they still will not fix the altimeter calibration window bug in the steam gauge C172.

[the one where instead of 299.92 the readings are in 1001-1002 etc. Also, turning the knob up to calibrate pressure turns the altitude needle down instead .

Wrong 172. The 172 included in MSFS is an S model not an M model. Also wasn’t this fixed in SU3?

I would love a C172 from that era. That 40 degrees of flaps was awesome. I did all my training in N and P models (‘79 and ‘81 respectively). The N model was the last model that had 40 degrees of flaps are full down and it was so noticeable compared to the P. At any rate, a good ‘70s 172 would be most welcome!

172M and 172N seem to be very very close.

Engine is different : Lycoming O-320-E2D -150 vs O-320-H2AD 160
So speed is different too : 115kias vs 122kias
M has camber-lift wings, N has similar wings without camber-lift
Electric system : 14V vs 28V
M has optionnal rudder trim

The mod could be common to both

Oh man! So cool

I thought this was fixed in SU3?

Either way, I’m game for a well-modeled, intermediate-era 172.

No, unfortunately the altimeter calibration window and knob has still not been fixed.

Exterior changes

I am not sure but it seems the 1st nose variant (red) with one light is more specific to 172N and the second one (blue) with 2 lights visible on some 172M. But I also found 172M pictures with 1 light…

From what I see, fuselage is so close to SP, that I’ll use it like this.

The wheel fairings look like the recent ones, not the older ones I made for the Reims Rocket.

Interior changes

Almost everything is ok with Reims Rocket interior : I’ll have to use eletrical flaps, 2 levers, maybe hide the manifold pressure gauge, but that’s already something I should do on the bushkit and the taildragger (2 levers too)… Tell me what tyou think of this
A change I’ll probably make is the fuel selector that looks like this in all the references I found :

Liveries

If you have specific liveries, that are dear to you, or famous 172N/M planes, you can start giving them. I like real liveries especialy the ones with history

Thanks for your work; I’ve enjoyed the Reims Rocket in FS2020 quite a bit!

Do you still plan to allow different avionics, ranging from No GPS to the PMS GTN750 or TDS GTNXi units?

yes same options as in the Reims

Thank you for this Bagolu!! I’ll be clocking my first 40 hours in a 1964 172E and 1964 182G, so this will be the best to get accustomed to old school Cessnas with airspeed indicators in MPH.

You can always change the background image of the gauge through a livery (to get mph, km/h…)

If you are keen to make liveries, it would be great if you could make ZK-FJB? It is the first plane I ever flew and it would be great to have it in the sim ahah. Really excited to see how his turns out!

I can make easy liveries
Have you got good references ?
