Cloud textures pixelated and grainy

nonsens, nonsens… Im since from alpha and until patch 5 - clouds were simply fantastic and very smooth..... and please dont say its something wrong with dx11 etc…
They screw up something and thats it …
Lets hope they fix this ASAP - because now part of simu feeling is completly gone…

This used to happen sometimes but in a limited way. Now it’s all over the place, every flight.

Stop the downgrade!

They intentionally/unintentionally broke something. I was fascinated with the clouds in alpha. This started happening after updates. When I first noticed that, I turned my graphic card upside-down, searched through NVidia settings with a magnifying lens without luck.

Perhaps there is a way to fix this in the settings file as with LOD. The issue is found mostly in Live Weather.

Here is the cloud in August, there is no sign of those dotted clouds.

I condemn that “Improved TAA” thing which was introduced with Update 5. Since then I could never enjoy MSFS as before.

Has ANYONE ever asked for improving TAA or so? Can anyone really explain what “Improved TAA” was for?

I feel cheated like being sold a “better TV” by a salesperson, only to find that it’s of much lower quality than the model I originally planned to buy. In that scenario we would all guess the salesperson’s motive closely enough, but in this “Improved TAA” case no one can tell WHY the development team ever bothered doing that.

Today, volumetric clouds set to ultra with broken weather, textures ultra. Seems to be ok, or are my eyes deceiving me?

So much relief seeing all those comments here… I was beginning to think I’m going crazy because I was sure I didn’t experience this at release, but I couldn’t explain to myself why Asobo would have introduced such a blatant visual bug in an official patch. To be fair, I suppose someone somewhere is pressing hard on them to release as much as they can while not letting them fix the bugs first. Well, knowing Microsoft, I shouldn’t be surprised.

Issue deniers won’t see this. They will follow every similar legitimate issue report and claim that nothing was wrong. Please go to https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/msfs-2020-the-ever-degrading-flight-sim/331979/18 and check how they tried hard on that.

It’s amazing so many voluntary issue deniers exist in this forum and work so hard to “fact check” others’ own experiences. This doesn’t smell good.

Let’s do some true Fact Checks here:

(Issue Deniers claimed) “I didn’t notice anything wrong so your complaint must be baseless!”

Fact Check: No one can deny others’ issue report by simply claiming he never encountered same issue himself.

(Issue Deniers claimed) “I’ve never seen any evidence of image downgrade!”

Fact Check: There are many posts and screenshots on this forum that clearly showed how the graphics looked bad after some upgrades. And same issue reporters testified that these issues didn’t exist with same configuration when MSFS was first released.

(Issue Deniers claimed) “If it’s a true issue, you should file an issue ticket instead of ranting on the forum!”

Fact Check: I myself filed a very detailed ZenDesk issue report with many screenshots. However the status for that ticket was silently updated to “Solved”, without any explanation or feedback. Other people also experienced the same “ticket labeled as solved when nothing happened” thing. No one likes to complain on forum, however people see no other ways to get some important issues resolved.

(Issue Deniers claimed) “Issues like this must be due to your own insufficient hardware. You should never expect best results from low end PCs!”

Fact Check: First, this graphics issue was seen on many decent hardware configurations. I now have a GTX 1660 Super but issue is still there. Second, even for “minimum” hardware, new graphics issue which didn’t exist when MSFS was released but was brought by later patches obviously had nothing to do with hardware.

(Issue Deniers claimed) if you guys are not happy about this game, why not just leave it? In stead you keep complaining here!”

Fact Check: it’s 100% normal for any customer who has paid for a product but feel unhappy about it to start and continue reporting and complaining issues until they are solved. Actually for MSFS, people complained more likely because they loved this product so much that they hated to see its downgraded graphics ruined their once fantastic playing experience.

On the other hand, it’s quite UNNATURAL for many “true players” to waste so much time reading issue reporting threads, denying other players’ issue reports, when they could have just ignoring these posts and enjoying their own games.

(Issue Deniers claimed) “We’ve seen too much this type of complaining on almost any game discussion groups. Probably these are the same group of people that complain everything!”

Fact Check: I cannot speak for others, but I myself NEVER posted on any other game forums (although I own many games). The truth is that I love MSFS so I care about it. AND I believe this particular graphics issue can and should be easily solved by the development team because, hey, it was brought by their own later changes (on the other hand, I am not sure if airliners’ issues can be easily solved).

I also don’t think other games have many “downgrade” issues. I’ve heard of some game patches broke the game, but normally they were game balancing issues, and development teams would quickly release another patch to tune back some changes. If a bad patch remained not corrected for too long, then I guess that’s because that game had already long passed its prime years and not many still cared and complained anyway!

Here, I have found a temporary fix/fudge to this pixelated cloud problem and it was easy!

Do you play 1080p by any chance?

Yes I’ve also noticed pixelated clouds… I play 1080p (my display’s native resolutions) and it was OK before… My focus is on night lighting that night lights changed dramatically after update-5 (light orbs now appear bloated and square-ish for me and some other users)… Am beginning to think this might be a by-product/bug of the TAA change that happened with update-5.

And now looking at this pixelated clouds thread and tried it also… Yep, my clouds are pixelated!
I do experience FPS increase, so these changes might “trade” visual quality with FPS… But would appreciate being given the option instead of forced into the new change (for instance, ability to choose between “old TAA” and “new TAA” in the options screen).

This should be in the top priority group. This totally breaks immersion being a flight sim. These clouds did not look like this on release.

Your clouds look much worse that mine, but I’ll bet you are running graphics at greater than 1080 res. like I am. The more resolution the worse your clouds will look. Wonder if the clouds looked perfect if it would drag fps into the basement.

I’m running on a 1440 monitor. Interesting the first one is on my 4k monitor. However, I did run FS recently back on my 4k monitor to test and can confirm the same grainy pixels. I know I saw pixels on the release version but it was mostly around the fringes of the cloud and when you flew closer.

I feel like Asobo made changes in the clouds under the blanket of “optimizations.” With my PC even in 4k at worse it was ~30 fps. Who knows.

Do your clouds still grainy in all anti-aliasing setting (no AA, FXAA, DLAA, TAA)?

I don’t think they deliberately downgrade clouds to be grainy just for optimisation though.. That would be absolutely silly on their part if true… Would be better for us to slide the clouds to low or medium if we want more performance, rather than having grainy clouds at ultra just for the sake of extra fps

Yes, I am playing in 1080P. I am not altering anything in User.Cfg. Charles

Sometimes they look better sometimes worse. Because this is not a cloud bug. It has something to do with lighting/reflections. Try changing the time of day so the sun would be lower and you’ll see clouds become more grainy.

Where abouts are these setting

Yeah ive tried all the different AA settings without much difference. I hope Asobo fixes this soon, but seeing it in “Backlog” doesnt give me hope for a fix soon.

There’s a VR update coming in December. The changes to the graphics and performance would likely be in preparation for the VR update as it will need all the extra performance it can get so people don’t complain about fps.

I’d imagine they’re not interested in visual quality at the moment when that has been stated it will be fixed with DX12. VR update is coming first so in order to roll that out with minimal performance impacts and have it be successful some performance would probably have been tweaked.

I’m speculating, this is only my opinion and I respect others may disagree.
