Confusing ILS paths on the World Map

Trying to use ILS on the World Map in the UK is a nightmare. The World Map gives completely outlandish approach paths and it can’t even be edited. This is Manchester Airport for example, ILS 23R:

It wants me to fly directly over the airport (green), then make ridiculous turns in the vicinity (purple). No matter which STAR you choose, it ends at the MCT waypoint all the same.

Most British airports are like this by the way. RNAV paths are fine but ILS is completely borked. And it can’t be edited either on the World Map or in the FMC (default Neo).

Is there any technique to “trick” the World Map into giving proper approaches or Great Britain is just this glitched mess? Apart from creating the whole plan in the FMC which I won’t do.

Just for fun:

Birmingham ILS 33

Leeds Bradford ILS 32

Exeter ILS 26

You get the idea.

That’s the way they’re supposed to be. Look at the charts, they all start at a VOR or NDB located at the field. In real life you’d get vectored onto the final approach course but those approaches are correct.

It looks like that is the way the approach is designed. The only feeder fix shown for the ILS is MCT, then outbound on the localizer and a procedure turn inbound.

In reality, ATC will likely be vectoring you to final one you reach DAYNE. But own-nav, this is going to be the correct routing.

Generally, I wouldn’t file or plan an approach as that’s something that’s going to be determined as you get closer to the airport, at least in the US.

Here’s the planview of the approach plate showing MCT as the only initial approach fix (IAF). No feeder fixes at all, actually.

In reality no aircraft ever flies an approach like this, and unfortunately the in-sim ATC doesn’t vector you anywhere else. So basically the only option I have is to disregard this phase of the plan and just HDG mode myself until I can catch the LOC?

Well, perhaps not most airliners at larger airports, but smaller planes and/or smaller airports do fly procedure turns all the time. And we train hard to do so.

That’s correct. I’d go further to say that you shouldn’t put the ILS in the plan. General practice is to wait until you get the ATIS or “expect” from ATC.

That said, I wouldn’t trust the ATC in the sim any farther than I can throw it.

Thanks. I have to plan the ILS though, because if I don’t then I can’t program the ILS frequency in the FMC as far as I know (again, default Neo). It only accepts it if it loads in with an ILS arrival already set.

I use Pilot2ATC, and usually get vectors if there isn’t an approach fix.

I’ve never used the MSFS flight planner tho. I manually enter my flight plans into the FMS from Simbrief.

Thanks for the help everyone, I appreciate it. I have to say this seems to be a UK peculiarity as I have rarely, if ever found anything like this in any other region. Usually the ILS paths appear “logically” on the World Map so I barely ever had to take this into consideration. But it’s nice to know that the approaches are at least correct. One always learns something new in this sim!

Navigraph Charts displays it like this:

You do it by pressing the RADNAV button. Enter the frequency on the scratchpad, then press the ILS freq button.
