Constant PC crashes in MSFS2024, Help/Advice needed & much appreciated!

EDIT: THE ISSUE HAS BEEN RESOLVED! SEE END OF POST FOR DETAILS.

Hi,

I’m writing this post in a desperate attempt to make any progress towards an issue I’ve been facing since the release of MSFS 2024 on Nov 18th: It simply does not work for me at all. I don’t just experience bugs or CTDs, I reliably experience full backscreen PC crashes literally every time I enter the sim.

I am looking for any tips, any advice you may have that could help me resolve this problem, especially if you have extensive knowledge about troubleshooting such issues.

My specs:

  • Intel core i713700KF
  • ASUS Prime Z690-A
  • TUF Gaming Radeon RX6800XT
  • 3x 1TB SSDs (2 NVMEs, 1 SATA)
  • 32GB 5200 MHz DDR5 RAM (soon to be 64)
  • Corsair RM750 PSU

As you can see, while not cutting edge, this is a relatively high end system that should be comfortably within the performance requirements of FS24. The system is almost exactly 2 years old at this point, was built brand new by myself and worked flawlessly ever since, in every game and every application. This includes demanding titles like RDR2, Cyberpunk, productivity applications such as CAD software - and of course MSFS2020, including during frequent long haul flights of sometimes 15+ hours, even with some lighter games running simultaneously. I’m writing this to underline that this should not reasonably be any kind of power spike PSU overload or hardware issue, although the crashes I’m experiencing sort of fell like that in a way.

Like I wrote above, I’m experiencing full system crashes to a black screen without any sound left, but the fans and lighting remaining on, until the power of reset button is pressed. Very rarely the PC automatically reboots itself, but most often times it doesn’t, There is never a BSOD, nor any error message or indication of an impending crash. Just after release the sim/system was unstable that it crashed even a few seconds after the “customize identity” screen. Then, after the first update I made it to the main menu (although if I just left the sim there it would still crash the system after a while) and could start a flight, but then a crash was guaranteed after anything between a few seconds, to my record of maybe around 10 minutes or so. Always, every single time. And believe me, there were many times. I’ve been troubleshooting this since release - a lot.

So what did I try then?

Initially, since this only ever happened in MSFS2024 I thought it was software related (and in the end, I currently still do, but differently). SO I tried to repair the files (I have the Steam version). I tried to reinstall the sim, many many times. I deleted the cloud saves, I deleted everything local of the sim that could’ve been corrupted in some way, but to no avail. I checked my graphics drivers. I also updated the BIOS which included the lates microcode from intel that should stop the 14th gen degradation issue for those that are familiar. Didn’t help. I still suspected that maybe my CPU was a victim of Intel’s 13th gen ■■■■■■, so I tried to underclock it. Same with my GPU. Nope, nothing. Even with significantly reduced clock speeds and power draws on both, the outcome was still the same kind of crash. I ran a bunch of stress tests on the CPU, which it all passed without a hiccup. Still suspecting a hardware defect, I took it to the retailed I bought it from for testing, and it passed their testing as well. Of course I still can’t 10000% rules a hardware fault out, but given all of this, I think it is extremely unlikely. I also ran two different RAM tests and VRAM tests, which passed.

I also tried reinstalling windows, hoping to wipe any underlying software issue away. First I did so from within windows using the reset function. That didn’t change anything either. I then proceeded to reinstall it several times over using and installation USB drive, including secure erasing all drives in the process - with the same outcome.

I made sure to have all chipset drivers, any anything else my motherboard and GPU needs up to date. Tested the sim with only minimal additional software installed and nothing else open, still the crashes remain.

Online I read that some (unfortunately very few) people are experiencing something similar, so if that’s you I’d love to hear about it. Some people reported that a low level driver issue was the culprit, so I tried disabling the Realtek audio driver in particular, but that didn’t work either. I tried to use driver verifier, but didn’t get any results. I also do not actually get any memory dump files for some weird reason. The only indication of the fault I can reliably attribute to these crashes is a “fatal hardware error”, the details of which you can find in the attached screenshots.

At this point, I truly just don’t know what to do or try anymore. I feel like I’ve exhausted everything, without really even knowing where to search.

Short of just replacing hardware (which of course I don’t just have sitting around, I really think I’ve given it my full troubleshooting effort.

I should maybe mention that obviously I’ve also opened a support ticket with MSFS, but that has not really been very helpful at all frankly. Just the standard, obvious steps I’ve already done countless times in the past two weeks.

My current gut feeling is that it’s probably some driver issue, but I just don’t have the knowledge or experience to really dig into that. So I’d especially appreciate input from anyone who does. In that context, I should maybe mention that I use a lot of Corsair products including fans, a case and their iCUE software, which does have… room to improve, just in case that is relevant in any way.

Thank you so much for reading this & Thanks a lot for any possible help.

EDIT: SOLUTION: I have been able to resolve the issue after months of troubleshooting. The problem was an outdated VBIOS of my GPU. Updating to the latest VBIOS available from AMD introduced fixes to GPU stability issues and resolved the issue for me completely. The Sim is running flawlessly now.

Does the sim get all the way into the startup page and then crash, or is it stopping some specific place during the load? There’s a known issue with the sim stopping at ~87-89% of loading and then crashing out.
If that’s the issue, check here:

If that’s not the issue, then please disregard!

I’ve been having this issue today as well. I’ve loaded up the sim, waited the 3-4 minutes for packages to verify, gone into the main menu, then clicked into the challenge league screen to check my standing. Twice now it’s hard locked, then system reset. The sim has worked fine for me since release up through last night. Now the crashes.

System info:
Windows 11 Home
Intel i5-9600k 6 cores
GeForce RTX Super 2070 8GB
32 GB system RAM
Running 1920x1080.

Fault bucket: 0x133_ISR_nvlddmkm!osDpcForIsr, type 0
Event name: BlueScreen

Same issue here. It was crashing around 60%. Now it crashes before it even makes it to the loading screen.

16 core i9 12900k, RTX4090, Asus ROG Strix Z690-E, Corsair 64GB DDR5 RAM. FS is on a second M2 drive

My situation is very similar. After a few minutes from the start of a flight, ranging from 1 to 20 minutes, there is a guaranteed ctd. Each time. With varying settings.
I have a RTX 4090, AMD Ryzen 9 7950 X3D 16 core processor and 64 GB. My Msfs 2020 is ok, but 2024 just crashes.
I also started a support ticket and was hoping that would provide help. It is extremely disappointing to hear it probably won’t.

Same here. I have also tried every step suggested in the forums. I have a clean install of windows with steam as the only app. Also formated my drives. Every thing is factory reset. Never gotten past the loading screen before ctd.

Rtx 3090, i911900k, 64g ram. Steam version.

Same issue I am having since the update, at first I thought must have been my machine. But pre-update it was rare I’d have and CTDs at all. Refuse to change anything until they release updates.

Unfortunately not. I can use the sim normally - just very briefly. I have made it into the world. The farthest I’ve gotten was to sit on the runway for around 10 mins in the A400M before it crashed the system. Never got so far afterwards.

Interesting. But at least you’re getting a bluescreen. I get nothing

I get CTD while walking around the Longitude or direct with the A400M. It must be GPU since the first CTD today every monitor went black and I had to hard reboot and the second one the amount of monitors suddenly got reduced from 2 to 1.

Taskmanager show mostly 7.0/8.0 GB VRAM and 15.0/16.0 GB RAM

Ryzen 5 1600X
16 GB DDR4
RTX 2070 Super 8 GB
1 TB SATA SSD

I don’t get an actual blue screen. It just locks for a few seconds and then my PC resets. The BlueScreen event is recorded in the Windows event manager.

hello ,

i think i have a similar problem, i have a pretty decent configuration, i9 14900k, 4090, 64gb ddr4.
at first i was under W11 and i was unable to play more than 10mn.
i tried a complete reinstall, but i couldn’t put w11 back, so i installed w10.
result even worse than under w11. i couldn’t even finish launching the game.
after a few hours i saw that w10 was choosing the graphics chip of my processor instead of the 4090.
i suddenly reached the menu, launch a game with a result similar to w11…
then the latest Nvidia patch came out.
and the miracle, I was able to play almost three hours in a row by choosing the automatic optimization of the Nvidia software… I said to myself ok, well, it’s just the settings that are in ultra by default, the automatic detection of the game with respect to my configuration and a little optimistic ;)…
unfortunately after restarting a game, I found the same problems, random crashes after a few minutes.
but by forcing fate, I understood that if I launch the game directly without going to a certain menu, I do not crash, on the contrary sometimes I have to change mode, career or free flight to unblock the crashes.
at certain times I can play for several hours, but the slightest return to a menu, makes me instantly crash.
I do not know if my feedback is useful in resolving the bug.
but I can assure you that it is not only related to the hardware or to updating your drivers. it doesn’t make sense that i can play perfectly for hours and then get crashes as soon as i change planes, keybinding or airports.
i look forward to a good update of the game and possibly some personal info storage on the cloud.

kind regards Alex

Crashes described by the OP seem indicative of hardware crashing. The listed PSU would seem to be adequate quality but power issues still come to the forefront of my mind with the description of the crashes. These modern GPUs could be more power sensitive when pushed to their limits and the new sim does appear to work the graphics harder from what I have seen.

If I was having hard crashes, I would look closely at my power supply which is one part that should be overspeced in a PC gaming build in my opinion. That plus your cooling solution. Hardware circuits just don’t tolerate some conditions and they will give up. This stuff is expensive as it is and when testing solutions requires spending even more money, it can be very disheartening. I fully understand.

I, too, am getting bsod’s around the game (can’t be absolutely sure it’s the game itself). I9 system, 4080 gpu. Most bsod messages seem to indicate FLTMGR.SYS - a Windows driver. What messages is everybody getting?

Check your CPU temperatures - if they’re getting too hot (and MSFS is a very demanding game) it could trigger a thermal shutdown and lock your machine.

Check your CPU cooler and any mesh filters to ensure you’re getting adequate airflow.

My system BSOD after 7 seconds of the loading screen. If i remove the internet, to second 13 and then BSOD.

The dumpfile says is the gameflt.sys (game fault) which seems to be a problem with the game.

Haven’t been able to play at all.

I moved the folder from X to the main C drive and it loaded until a fatal error message.

OneCorePlatformService_2. I have 10 cores.

Same, Every session I’ve done since the update has ended with a CTD. Sometimes it runs a while. Seems to be worse when I jump around between planes / airports. VERY Frustrating considering nothing else I do with my system ever crashes.

I installed the not optional Windows 10 update, restarted PC and now is working after moving the game to main Drive. Flew about 15 minutes with no problems.

I found under volting my 3090 has resolved my crashes.
