I’m looking to build a new PC for MSFS2024 and would like to know which CPU to buy for the new simulator. I was thinking of getting an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the successor to the popular 7800X3D, but Microsoft itself recommends the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X, which has more cores.
In MSFS2020, the choice would have been easy for the 9800X3D, but according to the developers, multithreading has been improved in the new simulator.
Can anyone in the community share their experiences on whether AMD’s X3D series is still the best CPU for flight simulation, or if the crown for best performance has gone to another CPU?
i think its a bit too early to tell, but its becoming clear that with dx12 there is much more emphasis on the gpu now, and, most of all, vram memory, get a gpu with tons of vram if you can

My limited testing in 2024 with my 7950X3D shows moving 2024 from the V-Cache cores to the non V-Cache cores (or indeed to all cores) show’s no discernable difference in main thread timing. Whilst I’d suggest its too early to say for sure, I’m starting to lean more on high frequency cores than V-Cache
here is a website that benchmarked multiple gpu’s and cpu’s. You can click on the different cpu and gou combinations in a drop down graph menu to see the different results.
Hello there. Found this thread after searching for an issue I’m having. I have the 7950X3d and a 4090 and I’m not sure if my 3dVCache is actually working. It’s a brand new PC I built so everything is a fresh install
I just upgraded to the new CPU (from an i9 12900K), as well as a new X870 Mobo and DDR5 Ram…I can’ tell if the sim itself if just stuttery or there is something wrong with my 3dVcache.
I feel like my 3d cores should be a bit higher than they appear here while the sim is running. Especially after looking at yours. This is while MSFS 2024 is running.
As I said above the V-Cache on my 7950 appears to have no effect on main thread time or FPS. Whilst I’ve received some very pointed attacks about how my testing is flawed (not withstanding I’m not testing persay, just demonstrating an observation) it doesn’t seem to matter where I’m flying having 2024 on the V-Cache cores makes no difference to performance.
Looking at your test, you appear to be GPU limited in both scenarious (99% gpu utilization in both scenarious), hence why the 3d vcache appears to have no improvement in performance compared to the regular cores. Lower your resolution and retest and I am sure you will see a difference.
Looks like your sim mainthread is running on core 10 from your Ryzen Master screen shot. The core 10 is not on the CCD with the 3dVcache so something is not right. This doesn’t mean there is something wrong with your 3dVcache as there are several other items that must be installed correctly for games to run on the 3dVcache.
All of these items need to be sorted out for your 3dVcache to work correctly:
Make sure you have the latest AMD chipset drivers installed
Make sure you have the latest MS gaming services installed via the Microsoft store
Make sure you have Microsoft gamebar turned on in Settings->Gaming->Gamebar
Make sure you are running the Balanced power profile in Windows (accessible via Control Panel)
I have the 9900x. Since the surprise AMD fixes (which came after the 7000 series stock cleared) it runs very nicely. Core parking is automatic. It uses all 12 cores in MSFS. No need to process lasso anything. My RTX 4080 is being thrashed. My 9900x is around 30 percent usage. The X3D is not needed here. (ex-5800X3D owner, where X3D really mattered with msfs 2020).
I had a similar situation when I upgraded from the 5800X3D to the 7950X3D.
I didn’t expect a monstrous framerate improvement, since the 5800X3D is a pretty amazing little gaming CPU. But I wasn’t seeing the improvement I was hoping for.
So I went whole hog (still on FS20) testing various settings and running CapFrameX tests to compare, ending up with the tweaks detailed in this post:
Process Lasso priorities and affinities according to this guide. I was quite amazed at how much the improvment was when I followed this guide. The 7950X3D and Process Lasso were made for each other. Since I started running FS24 I’ve uninstalled RTSS. I’m not capping framerate, and I don’t need it to feed data to MSI Afterburner (which I also uninstalled.) And I’ve renabled hyperthreading (SMT).
This video was extremely important.
I’m in the process of testing FS24, and I’ll post my results in a future thread.
I’m testing different affinities, as I want to see whether FS24 runs better on only the Vcores, only the faster non-Vcores, or when using all 16 cores.
I’m really unhappy with performance. Like, this is not good. I have a 7950x3d and 4090. 64GB ram @ 6000mhz EXPO. MSFS24
I’m getting 21fps above LAX. I followed the optimized settings for the sim that were posted elsewhere. I can’t figure out how to get the sim to render in 1440p and post in 4k. It worked fine in MSFS2020 but doesn’t work in this sim.
MSFS24 is using the vcache cores. I can see the other cores parking. It’s just a stuttering, jittery mess.
