CPU recommendations for MSFS2024?

Try setting your Windows power plan to ultimate (or performance). It will load your sim initially onto the 3dvcache cores but will use all available cores as needed. No cores will be parked.

When I load into a flight I can see my internet connection pegged at around 500mbps which is the speed from my ISP. During a flight, it will regularly burst to 500mbps. I get some micro stuttering but who knows if its due to the internet stream, gpu/cpu balancing, or lackluster sim code :person_shrugging:.

Nice to still have MSFS2020 to keep my sanity.

I have 7800X3D and rtx4070
The processor is running at a maximum of 15-20%.
Video card - 100%
I think that the video card is more important, but the 5800 could handle MSFS24…

I’m still getting decent results with my 5800X3D; multithreading will max out 8 cores with SMT off flying at 2000’ over Los Angeles (busy PG area) at 4K Ultra + TLOD 400, while nearly maxing out my Radeon 7900 XTX.

With SMT on, it’ll max out all 16 logical cores while processing new scenery data as it downloads, but is hitting more like 70-75% in between those spikes.

This gives me in the 35-45 fps range except when going directly over large areas of trees where it dips. Flying higher improves frame rates as scenery gets less detailed.

So a full 16 physical cores might well do a bit better, especially if paired with the fastest NVidia cards (assuming no VRAM shortage slowdowns!)

I just posted a thread in which I tested the sim assigned to my 7950X3D Vcores only, Non-Vcores only, and all 16 cores. I did not see a significent difference. I’m probably GPU limited.

I’m going to stick with Vcores only.

I have the exact same specs, 7950x3D, 4090, 64GB Ram @ 6000 and my sim also stutters and has audio stutters. It happens when panning, loading in and also when I’m in the menus and zooming in and out on airports on the globe selecting a gate. Does your audio stutter?

I also see that my cores are parked when focussing in the sim window. In MSFS2020 it’s fine.

Also frame gen is broken and often does that weird glitch where it drops massively in frames.

Hi there Brad,

I can’t say I have audio jitters, that seems to be working fine for me.

I can say that I am mainthread limited always. Gfx card is fluctuating between 90% and 55% utilization.

I agree about frame gen. Turning it off and on doesn’t appear to do anything for me. There’s no fps boost.

Seems like an AMD issue atm reading all the posts, all the system reports have these issues in common

If I had the option (which I do rn) of keeping my 9800x3d order I managed to place this morning, vs the 9900x for $80 less, which would you go for? MSFS24 and Forza tend to be my main games, and otherwise the rig tends to be used for machine learning projects and whatnot. Also trying to teach myself more complex linux stuff/docker where cores may be of use? Is the multi-CCD thing still an issue?

I think I recently bought myself a 7800X3D and a 4070 and I’m happy!And here people are already talking about 9800… :see_no_evil: :see_no_evil: :see_no_evil:

It only came out on November 7th.

My paralysis is now that I have a 870E motherboard with 9800x3d and a PCIE 5 m.2 drive, do I wait for the 5000 series GPU or wait for a non-scalped 4900. (Shrug). Either is going to be a step up from the 3090ti but at this point waiting it out to the 5k boards w/ pcie5 bus might be more future resistant…..

I also have a top-end DDR5 pcie5 motherboard. Perhaps, looking at the prices and the shortage, I regret a little that I did not buy 4080. But also buying 4070 was very sensitive for my wallet… So… Overall, I am very happy. I play on 2K, which I’ve been dreaming about for many years.

I would wait for the 9900X3D and 9950X3D benchmarks vs the 9800X3D. Those CPU’s are coming out in january. In the 7000 there wasn’t much difference but they changed a lot to improve the architecture.

I’m still on a 5800X3D but the numbers I’m seeing in testing say I would benefit from bumping up to a 7800X3D or 9800X3D if I was willing to spend the money on a full CPU/mobo upgrade.

This would be mostly from the faster clock speed on the newer Ryzens, which just boosts everything over the older generation.

2024 uses the 8 cores on the 5800X3D/7800X3D/9800X3D better than 2020 did, but I haven’t yet seen numbers indicating that moving off the X3D more-cache CPUs to the less-cache-more-cores non-X3D CPUs would be beneficial in 2024. If it is it’ll be limited to scenarios that are CPU-heavy like big PG cities and airports with many objects.

I’d suggest having a read of this thread…it provides some testing on the V-Cahce and non V-Caches cores of 7950X4D. Appears very little difference in performance.

I did some very rough testing with my 7950X3D. Flying over NYC with the main thread maxed out (limited). Switching between the X3D and non X3D cores showed zero difference in main thread time or FPS overall. Take it for what you wil…

I agree. I have the Ryzen 7950 and never CPU limited, all GPU with my modest 3070.

For the record, here’s what my AMD profiles looks like (unmodded):

The software is (like 2020) totally un-optimised for the CPU / GPU architecture. Stutters where CPU loading is minimal so buy what you can afford (want to have) but disregard 2020 and 2024 specs.
Warhammer and other FPShooter kind of games are much and much better in using your up to date HW, so if you play these as well, find a rig that supports those first.

Yes, in the meantime I posted my 7950 settings. It is notable that they do not use any of the CUDA Cores in the GPUs…

Did FS2020 ever use CUDA cores?
How do you monitor that?

No for 2020. This is image processing AI software and the reason I own this computer (game was a happy add on)… speed increases by over 10X:
