Crash after reinstall

Hi,

I have just reinstalled (clean) MSFS 2020, and now it crashes each time I start it.
I have attached errordumps from event viewer.

Crash occurs every time on start after check for updates and initial logo screens. It occurs each time during the second screen following these.

I’m on Windows 11 24H2 last build, i9-9900K, RTX4070TiSuper and latest NVIDIA driver 572.60, 64G RAM.

MSFS 2020 was running perfectly before uninstall and the subsequent reinstall.
Had some problems with the Inibuilds A350, so I tried the reinstall.

Hi @Swolski1996 ,

Thank you for this report. We’ve moved your topic into the User Support Hub.

The Bug Reporting Hub is for posting suspected or confirmed bugs that other users are able to reproduce without duplicating an existing bug report. Using the template or providing all the relevant information about your bug and sim setup is required in order to provide valuable information, feedback, and replication steps to our test team.

If you are not sure if your issue is a bug or need further input from the community, please use the User Support Hub category. If the community can replicate your issue, first search the Bug category to see if there’s an existing topic. If it already exists, contribute to that report. Duplicate bug reports will be closed.

If you believe it is a new report and no duplicate exists, then create a new bug topic using the provided topic template.

All issues caused by or involving third-party addons/mods should be reported to the third-party developer. Assure that no addons/mods are used when reporting issues in Bug Reports.

If you are using DX11 and the Nvidia app it will crash. Suggest deleting the Nvidia APP and give it a go.

FYI, with Nvidia driver 572.16/572.42/47/60, Nvidia app and DX12 selected in MSFS 2020 a CTD won’t occur.

However, with DX11 selected in MSFS 2020, using the same latest Nvidia driver and Nvidia app, a CTD will occur.

Until Nvidia fixes the application and Asobo MSFS 2020/2024, please check what happens if you select DX12 instead of DX11 by manually editing cfg file.

To do this, you need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line
PreferD3D12 0

Change the number 0 to 1

and save the changes.

OR

If you need Nvidia app, make sure to select DX12 instead of DX11 in Nvidia app and the profile for MSFS 2020.

OR

If Nvidia app installed go to:
c:\ProgramData\NVIDIA
delete folder named NGX

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestions - changing the PreferD3D12 parameter in the UserCfg.opt file to 1 did the trick.

Now MSFS 2020 is up running again

Thanks again for your help.

Hi, for the past week the game has constantly crashed for me, I’ve tried everything from reinstalling it to reinstalling the nvidia drivers. I get this crash report on the event viewer, what do I do?

Thanks for sharing about DX11 vs DX12 and the latest NVidia driver. I had the same issue (crash to desktop repeatedly), and setting DX12 from the UserCfg.opt file resolved it for me.

Glad this forum exists, because there are no official notices I know of that reported this issue.

You’re welcome mate.

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Faulting application name: FlightSimulator.exe, version: 1.38.2.0, time stamp: 0x00000000

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue? No community add-ons installed at all.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

100% repeatable.

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

REPRODUCTION STEPS

  1. nVidia driver 576.40 (5090 GPU) installed
  2. Do NOT optimize MSFS 2020 via nVidia App | Graphics
  3. Start MSFS 2020
  4. Turn off DLSS and revert to TAA and turn off other nVidia settings
  5. Set to DX11
  6. MSFS 2020 prompts for restart, exit, and restart
  7. During loading (about 50% of the way) CTD

To work around the issue, go to nVidia APP and select MSFS 2020 and click on Optimize button. Now start MSFS and it will proceed with CTD but the graphics settings will be set to nVidia optimize values (DLSS enabled). There is NO way to unselect DLSS without have MSFS CTD on restart.

WOW, I also did a re-install this morning to resolve multiple CTD’s a day on MSFS2024 and it NOW also crashes 100% on start up. Before the re-instalI I’d get 5-45 minutes without a CTD. I gave up with MSFS2024 and I am flying MS2020 on same computer with no issues. MS2024 is really buggy/sucky.
