Crashing to Desktop (Jan. 2022)

,

I’d like to chime in here, Ive got a 6900xt GPU and have been having constant driver timeouts when idle in the 3d globe map. Ive tried down-clocking my ram (No XMP) disabled all CPU turbos, forcing my GPU to work at its base clock and not boost. Reinstalled windows and only had vanilla msfs with 0 addons and 0 Programs except msfs.

I have ran prime 95 & furmark together for 24 hours (100% usage on cpu (5900x), gpu and ram (32gb)) , no crashes. I have ran memtest86 for 12, also no issues.

This is without a doubt a problem on microsofts part with AMD cards in my case.

yep… often read about that related to ATI driver. You can increase the timeout value or (if you sure there is realy no other issue and it should be the last step) you can disable the tdr check completely. At the moment we spoke about that in different topic where I added a link to the official description: CTD in DX11 mode without FPS Cap - #47 by MichaMMA ( some posts later I mentioned exactly the ATI thing  , where in the topic the user own nvidia )

And, dont forget to set a fps limit in general… then your card will not run in useless high load and the issue can may be also avoided.

I have already increased driver timeouts all it does is extend how long windows takes before killing the driver, disabling it altogether just makes windows crash. I’ve read the documentation, it doesn’t solve the core issue. An fps cap does nothing too, still crashes.

I have tested my gpu at 100% usage of activity and vram for 24 hours. There’s no driver issue or fps being too high issue.

This is a problem with the application. I’ve ruled out all the other possibilities

that I feared… but these also mean, the gpu is realy in trouble ( at least in the way the game use it  )

Look, the driver timeouts only occur in msfs, Ive use X-Plane DCS and p3d for 12 plus hours before and no issues. I’ve stressed the while system to extremes for days and downclocked everything it’s bloody rock solid.

If spending 10 minutes in the map gives me a black screen. It’s the application

If you look at the documentation on what TDR does, you will see that it recovers drivers to prevent whole system crash eg bsod. Disabling it disables recovery do of course the system will crash. There is nothing wrong with the gpu. I’ve been doing IT professionally for years, without a doubt I can tell you my system is as stable as can possibly be. Passes furmark, prime 95 for a whole day and memtest (3 passes)

thats I wrote… I think:

And I know how important it is to not disable TDR ( I mention it in other topic ) and here too.

I not own ATI, so I can’t say much about. Only that not less users reported while ago these kind of issue.

Some months ago i was also messing around with TDR and stuff, useless.
If you have an amd x570 chipset go for the latest AGESA, above 1.2.0.5 shouldfix USB disconnects which produce a blackscreen and kills the driver.
Do you have the free marketplace add-on G1000 NXI installed? remove it and try again.

I was messing around for months with these crashes and have it kinda stable now.

Infact, I do have it installed since I did all the content manager downloads. I’ll report back if that fixes the issue.

Ok so I removed the G1000 NXI, still crashed (Driver Timeout). This is happening in the menu in the world map so its not even being loaded. My bios is on AMD AGESA V2 1.2.0.7 according to my bios version. And there are no USB disconnects well at least no sound of it.

i have an amd card as well, 6900xt, crashed the first year between 5 and 20min, now i can do 1-2h flights without problems.

does it crash in menu also when the community folder is empty? (just rename it to community-old and it will create a new one, you can later delete it and rename it back)

what gfx card do you have?
in adrenalin, disable issue detection, enable lag reduction.
under performance / metrics disable all logging items (fps, gpu, vram, cpu, ram)
do you use VR?

i can only recommend these settings because they work on my end.

I’ve also got a 6900xt (I don’t have VR) I also can do 1-2 hour flights until it crashes, my community file is empty this is a fresh install I’ve even removed the non mandatory content from content manager still no luck

Just try going into the world map and wait for 30 minutes or so sometimes even 10 minutes, 2 out of 3 times it crashes.

Disabling even removing AMD software and issue detection doesn’t do anything other than not give you an error. Believe me I have tried, the problem still persists.

hello

still the hint: try to revert your OC.

We already know that there is a local VCruntime140.dll , depends on MS-Store vs Steam ( e.g. ). We also know that very often VCruntime140.dll crashs are OC related.

You OC each of your components ( CPU, RAM, GPU ) and so I nothing else expect as what you get: crashs with vcruntime… message. ( PS: start with revert RAM OC  )

this mean you disabled OC in meanwhile , at least for the test-cases ?

Yes which I already posted in my very first post. And have repeated it ad nauseam.

Although overclocks don’t matter anymore now since it is going to take about 80 days to redownload the game again. At which point a new update will be out and I will have to start again. Might as well check back in 2023 once microsoft has gotten their act together.

well, I can’t find where you mentioned that you done test-cases without any kind of OC. You only mentioned, at least what I understood, that you “think OC isnt the problem”.

The other possible causes we mentioned: conflict with other application, the Garmin Replacment mods, old FBW versions ( and files which are created outside of community folder from these mod, which you have to remove manually - same happens with other ‘workingtitle’ mods ), mods in general, cleaning of some “cache” files or content.xml , one time installed the google-maps-replacement and not cleaned hosts file, etc… Also the existing topics for ATI users, which seems run often into strange issues ( in special these power monster ATI cards ). May be you find more within existing topics about VCruntime140, which I forgot in meanwhile ( use the forum search function , or also check the link I already added ).
a note: In very old ages the vcruntime was also caused from Text2Speach=Azure. Since then I use Text2Speach=Offline ( en lang pack needs to be installed ).

And also: if you have no fps limit set, try to set one… starting with a lower value of 30fps and then go higher.

I not write all of these about OC too annoy you ( annoying is more like, if a user again and again write huge posts about how worst msfs is, and where the community users must first “translate” all that stuff and try to find the important infos related to the issue ). It is just a summary of what we know about VCruntime140.dll. If I would be a msfs developer, I would completelty ignore such “reports”, but we are the community and so you get at least some hints about possible reasons.

The problem with low bandwith while download I ignored, because we have also existing topics with many hints about that in forum. If we start to discuss here, we run out of topic: “CTD”. But one note about: beside of VPN , etc. you can also switch to another DNS, which is in meanwhile also mentioned within official FAQ. ( and again: check hosts file for strange entries )

I have eng us and eng South Africa language packs installed.

Lol at the “power monster ati cards” comment since these days green team cards are way more “power monster” than AMD cards. I did not have an issue with crashing or my “power monster ati card” until SU8. I had played a bit before the latest sim updates. So it definitely has nothing to do with my GPU or my system. Which was repeated ad nauseum in the very VC140 thread that you mention. In fact it has been repeated ad nauseum in said thread that one of the biggest issues with the VC140 error was that it is referencing something in the azure library that doesn’t even exist.

I have tested the crashing in a fresh install of Flight sim. It still crashes without mods. Which I also previously stated. Already set an FPS limit.

As for the bandwidth issue, ive already followed all the steps in the FAQ to no avail.

everything here points to MSFS being an issue in some form. When all other possibilities have been exhausted, What ever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. However it is not that improbable to draw the conclusion that MSFS Is a bug ridden mess.

So lets summarize.

*We have a computer here. That is 100% stable with its overclocks. I know what an unstable overclock looks like after 15+ years of extreme overclocking. However Overclocks regardless of how stable or not have been ruled out of the equation.

  • We have a computer that can run any piece of software thrown at it. Various games and rendering programs such as Blender, handbrake etc. The ONLY piece of software on said machine that causes issues IS Microsoft Flight Simulator. Software that is even advertised as still in “alpha” development is more stable than Flight Simulator that has already gone through final release essentially.
  • We have a piece of software on said computer that once has been removed from the system refuses to download at the speed = to the users internet connection. Even after the various tips and tricks have been followed in said FAQ. While other pieces of software such as steam, origin, chrome downloads etc have absolutely NO difficulty maxing out my connection.

So if the computer is stable with and without overclocks
Every piece of software I have runs on this system without fault EXCEPT for MSFS.
Everything downloads at the correct speed EXCEPT MSFS

then the culprit is MSFS

So we can beat around the bush all we like here. and try and blame overclocks and mods and this and that and the other until the pigs come home. It has been made quite clear to me that this software released and launched by microsoft clearly should have gone through some form of open public Beta as it is clearly full of issues and bugs and is unstable and fragile as all heck.
