CRJ Speed - What am I doing wrong

Hey! Not had this issue before, but I can’t get the CRJ550 much above stall speed as I’m trying to climb to FL340. I tried max throttle and speed doesn’t change. Anyone see anything from the screen shot to suggest something I’ve forgotten to do!

Switch off the Cowl and Wing Anti Ice , .. it should solve the problem ..

In high altitudes it is important to keep your speed, ideally at 290 knots / Mach .74 to be on the safe side. With this speed the plane has a good climb performance.

You are using V/S mode and selected 2200 ft per minute. At this altitude it is not a suitable climb rate. Some airlines don’t allow to use V/S Mode in the CRJ at this altitude for avoiding your situation. Normally you should be in speed mode, select 290 knots and leave the throttles in climb thrust.

thanks all. I’ll try all suggestions next flight. In the end I descended to 25000 and got my speed up!
Still learning this thing. I usually fly the Caravan

just tried this exact setup. It flew up to FL340

That’s great.
One thing about the Anti Ice mentioned before. It looks like you don’t need it there, so you should turn it off. It reduces the power of your engines because the anti ice system is taking additional bleed air out of the engine.

Yeah, a CRJ instructor was saying he cringes every time someone, even real pilots, use VS. it is just too dangerous. SPD mode is what you should use at 290 or kts or Mach .74. There is plenty of info about it at the aerosoft forums.

GA habits :grimacing:

The problem with speed mode, especially in the CRJ 100/200, were the never ending continuous pitch fluctuations with the tiniest wind and/or temp changes.

Speed mode was a no-go for that reason on our CRJs, it simply made the passengers become air sick in no time.

Vfto is far away from the optimum climb speed, so I don’t understand what’s dangerous about vs or pitch mode.

Is there any general criteria on when you need to turn on the anti-ice system besides the obvious criteria - that being clouds. Do you need both cowl and wing anti-ice on under icing conditions ? What is the difference between SAT and TAT?

Is your throttle setup correctly in the config settings and in the throttle setup section in the CRJ EFB?

I was noticing your N1 seems very low if it’s at max power. It should be in the high 90’s to 100%. After I adjusted my throttle configs, I had no power issues when climbing.

Everytime someone uses V/S to climb, a puppy dies…

Hi @OneFang666, I moved your topic into #third-party-addon-discussion:aircraft This sub-category of the forum is for discussing any #third-party-addon-discussion:aircraft related topics. Thank you!

Do you know that you have to use v/s, even on the CRJ, (most likely multiple times) during every
flight?

It was but good point I will re calibrate.

The plane has Icing detection. Only turn on the cowl anti-ice when you get the ‘Ice’ message in the right center screen, and the yellow ‘ICE’ light on the overhead panel.

Wing anti-ice you would generally only turn on if you see ice forming on the wings, turn on the wing ice lights at night to see.

As soon as the Ice warning disappears, you can turn off the anti-ice.

Not that I was aware of? Maybe in descent…not in the climb. Always use FLC in the climb for the best and most effective climb.

I think you mean SPEED mode? There is no FLC in the CRJ.

Right, you are correct. Both buttons do the same thing. I fly citations too much which use FLC.
