I’m just curious as I see people saying they get CTDs all the time. I do get them too but it is rare. Out of curiousity, for those who are getting frequent CTDs, are you overclocking or undervolting? I just want to establish a pattern as I believe much of the CTDs are related to people undervolting or overclocking. Other possibility is running diagnostics in the background such as HWmonitor or MSI Afterburner etc.
Anyone who is not getting CTDs…I assume you are not undervolting, overclocking, or running monitoring programs in the background?
Not getting CTDs but I am undervolting and running monitoring programs (at least MSI Afterburner). That said, I’m very careful to stress test all my changes, to ensure I’m not losing any stability whatsoever versus going stock.
Probably took me a month to get the GPU undervolt 100% stable. No crashes in 6 months now.
I think a lot of people underestimate the work needed to get it stable if you want to push the envelope a bit. Most of the time I’d recommend finding what seems stable and taking a step back from there, to begin with.
Same here. I am overclocking my CPU and undervolting my GPU. I have run prime95 for 24 hours and several 4K GPU stress tests like Superposition etc for 24 hours without crashes. Most of my rare CTDs with MSFS2020 seems to be related to me interacting with the cockpit like changing barometer or something like that.
Btw running 24 hour stress tests (especially p95) isn’t really necessary since this is way beyond what would be ‘normal usage’. P95 is the worst stress test there is imo. It’s just a bsod generator. Running p95 24 hours without crashing means you still have lot’s of headroom😛
Ontopic though: unstable oc makes your system crash/freeze combined with possibly bsod’s. Unstable gpu oc/undervolt makes your gpu crash and most of the time freezes your game image. 99% of the time you can ctr a del out of this, undo your oc and restart the game without problems.
If somehow oc’s do cause ctd’s i msfs, it’s probably a game issue and not a oc issue.
Ps. Modern gaming motherboards suck and an cpu oc is almost needed to get most out of your cpu without using crazy voltages. Running a high end cpu with stock settings is a waste of money/power.
This is precisely why I’m asking. Many people are saying they can’t play the game without a CTD while I can do inter-continental flights without a problem. This tells me there is more to it than the CTD being just a “game issue”.
I initially thought the release was good. Update went well. First few flights went pretty good. Then a day later CTD. No rhyme nor reason, just happened. Do CTD happen? Yes.

Not exactly. You are asssuming all games have the same utilization and requirements. It’s like this. Prime95 can crash your system while playing a youtube video doesn’t. Is it Prime95’s fault or the computer? Hint: It’s the computer.
So by your logic, people have to undo their oc’s, wich are working fine in every other scenario, only because it causes ctd’s in combination with msfs…Makes no sense.
And still… A ctd isn’t an common oc failure. Like i described above.
Honestly, i don’t think oc’s are the problem here. I mean… This sim isn’t the most stable software out there. Lot’s of people use oc’d systems, lot’s of people don’t. Many get ctd’s, but many don’t.
Your CTD actually has an error message? Every single CTD I ever experienced with MSFS2020 is a CTD without any errors. Usually there is a slight stuttering just before the CTD. Again though, this is very rare for me. Others are saying they get CTDs all day long.
I’ve been overclocking CPU, RAM & GPU since the sim released, and have never had a significant problem with CTD’s, apart from a couple which were acknowledged bugs that were fixed.
So far, everyone is overclocking
This leans me to believe that the overclocking population is quite large for this game and most likely the culprit of those CTDs mostly likely caused by incorrect/unstable overclocking.
What part of it doesn’t make sense? I just provided the comparison between Prime95 and running a Youtube video. They both use your CPU but it crashes on Prime95 and not on Youtube video. The crash isn’t because prime95 is broken, it’s because the overclock was incorrectly done and unstable, ie, it’s the computer, not the app.
Sorry i misunderstood. But still, if your system is stable in any software except msfs it doesn’t make sense to me why you would undo your oc just for msfs. Unless msfs is the only software you use.
So far the few people responded here do have oc’s but are not experiencing ctd’s. For the rest of the people using msfs it’s impossible to know if everyone is overclocking. I highly doubt this. Ctd’s are happening to alot of people. Ofcourse some are running oc’s, but not all of them.
Another thing is, i can make an oc wich will fail with p95 (will bsod or restart, not ctd) but will work with msfs.
I can also make an overclock wich will fail with msfs. But i’m 100% sure this will not cause a ctd. If the oc fails it will just bsod or restart.
Since people here saying they have oc’s but don’t suffer from ctd’s you’d think the people that do suffer from ctd’s have unstable oc’s. But i fail to see how an unstable oc will cause a ctd and not just bsod or crash and restart.
I never said undo overclocking. Those are your words. Instead I would make sure the OC and UV is stable before playing MSFS by means of tests like prime95 and Superposition stress tests. If it crashes on either of these, your system is not stable.
Good point regarding Xbox. However there definately is a disparity between me (get rare CTD) and others (who get daily CTDs) and I’m trying to understand why.
