CTD Approaching Reykjavik

 Thank you using the Bug section, using templates provided will greatly help the team reproducing the issue and ease the process of fixing it.

Are you using Developer Mode or made changes in it?

No

Brief description of the issue:

When spawning east of Reykjavik and flying west towards the city, I get a reproducible CTD every single time. I noticed when trying to complete the last leg of the Iceland bush trip. It happens even in safe mode, with all addons disabled.

Provide Screenshot(s)/video(s) of the issue encountered:

Detailed steps to reproduce the issue encountered:

  1. Spawn just east of Reykjavik on the outskirts of the city in any plane. 2) Fly west towards the city, roughly towards BIRK. 3) As you pass over the coast, you should get a CTD.

PC specs and/or peripheral set up if relevant:

Hi @fennelda,
Does the event viewer show any error?

Try loading up directly at BIRK airport, does this also cause a CTD for you? I have issues with MSFS loading there.

I just tried this - funnily enough, I seem to be able to load at BIRK and fly around and all is good. I even flew from BIRK to the point I started this test with, and then flew back, and no CTD (although I could swear I tried this a few days ago and got a CTD the minute I lifted off from BIRK).

After this, I went back to the main menu and reattempted the test starting east of the city and flying west towards it. Instant CTD at the usual place. Same time of day, same weather, same simulator instance. It’s odd.

I will try loading up at BIRK later, the last time I got CTD directly at the airport but I also remember flying in a group flight towards here and also got a CTD in the air.

I also remember somebody reporting this issue. If you search BIRK on the forums, you will find more CTD instances at the airport or in the vicinity. It seems like an open issue.

Are using the free Orbx mesh for Iceland? If yes, maybe try without but I remember having CTD with and without it.

MSFS does the CTD immediately again at BIRK, when trying to load up on the airport runway.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

yes
Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

crashes approaching reykjavik
also tried with both the bush trip from the north and a world map flight from keflavik. Fully stock, crashes about 4 miles from the airport, hard game exit no error message
If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

I am, but I tried it with no addons installed at all, and it made no difference.

Nor exactly reproduced as Topic Author, but I did CTD tonight after a two hour flight from Greenland.

ILS-Z RWY19 via MIKVU, with an Enroute from the West, and I CTD’d a few NM from the runway, which technically is from the North.

However, I was over the water, so that may be common to Topic Author’s coast symptom.

It might be helpful for everyone who has a track of where they CTD to show it on a map. Perhaps there’s a spatial correlation. I will post my Little Nav Map track when I’m back near the PC.

Updated - I tried 3x to land at RWY19 - this CTD is reproducible.

Set up a quick flight to put yourself airborne with Destination BIRK Runway 19. It will crash a few seconds after flying consistently.

I get this Error message before CTD approaching BIRK from the East. I see the runway and line up and this, I got it twice now. Yes latest update today, all mods present in comminuty so…I KNOW im supposed to delete them but…Heck I like to live “on the edge” lol. So I wont complain really bad. I will reload and try other airports to see if I can crash other places as well…Flying the FBW developement Mod- latest one, I7 9700KF@ 4.9 Ghz all cores, stable temps, Radeon 6800XT @1440P roughly 60FPS all the way. No complaints, we’ll find out and the BIRK I have loaded is kinda old its a mod :stuck_out_tongue: Edit 27.04: removing old BIRK made no difference, still error then CTD getting close to Reykjavik.

MSFS loaded is v1.25.7.0 x64 (blah). BIRK is unmodded MSFS version. Approaching BIRK from the North to land RWY 19. Cross the coast and blam - CTD.

This used to be an issue at launch and it got fixed with one of the first few updates of the sim. Sucks that its happening again. I was actually planning on flying into there this weekend. Looks like I’ll be reconsidering my weekend flight plans.

Very frustrating after a long flight EGPC > BIRK
Well at least it is identified.
I will pick another airport BIKF as an alternate airport.

Ok, the crash happened again flying above Reijavik, not in approach, flying straight on the Flight plan, 6 000 feet, close to the airport, the plane was on the 0 of the 01. A short glitch then CTD.
It was a different airplane than my 2 previous CTD.

I just finished the bush trip around iceland (except for the last 4 miles - BIRK CTD) . Except for the immediate vicinity of BIRK, the rest of iceland is in good shape. Some of the interior isn’t photoscenery but I highly recommend starting at Keflavik and doing a tour along the coast, stay well south of Reykjavik and you can stop the tour to the north.

I recommend this scenery, it really adds personality to the whole island:

and this is ORBX terrain mesh for iceland. It needs a login but otherwise its free.

Thanks. Already have both of those. Been using the Iceland overhaul mod since it came out about a month after the sim launched. Flying in Iceland near launch is how I know it was broken back then. I believe it was an update in Oct 2020 that had originally fixed the CTDs in the vicinity of Reykjavik.

EgilsstaĂ°ir BIEG is 6500ft
Akureyri BIAR is 6300ft
I use both over BIRK anyway as they are longer and farther away for a chance at better weather, except now its mandatory to not use BIRK until this is fixed (again).
I also really like the approaches into 01 at Akureyri. You either get a 5.3 degree glideslope ILS with a 2.5 degree offset or an old school SDF where you can track final with an ndb to help.

I have done a little testing on this.

I tried to load the default Cessna 172 at Rwy 31 BIRK and got an immediate CTD.

I also tried to load the default Cessna 172 at Rwy 27 EKBI and got an immediate CTD.

I uninstalled World Update 5 and could load the default Cessna 172 at both BIRK and EKBI and fly around and land at both airports.

When I reinstalled World Update 5 and got immediate CTDs at both BIRK and EKBI trying to load the default Cessna 172.

I installed a third party for EKBI with WU5 installed and the default Cessna 172 loaded ready for flight

I installed a third party for BIRK with WU5 installed and the default Cessna 172 but it CTD

Summary – WU5 appears to be a factor, if not the factor, in CTDs for BIRK and EKBI after SU9.
