I just installed my PNY 5080 OC into my case last night, I also had a CTD in MSFS 2020 about 10 minutes after start of a free flight, I was really only booting it up to test. Same settings as when I had for my 3080, DX11/TAA. As I am typing this I just realized that I did not clear all of the caches, I will clear them tonight and test again. Below are my specs:

MOBO: MSI X670E Gaming Plus
CPU: 9800X3d OC to -30 +200
GPU: PNY 5080 OC - FURMARK Stable No additional OC
NVIDIA Driver 572.16 (installed prior to video card using DDU and no NVIDIA App, I was not sure which one would work best so I thought lets just start at the beginning)
PSU: Corsair HX1000i Platinum
OS: Win 11 23H2
GPU-z: Shows that I am running at 5x16

I can’t even get that far lol.

Mine CTD’s on the initial load, fresh install again…

Perhaps try a vanilla install on your 1TB drive. Just to get you started. Without any messing about moving stuff.

Does that work without CTD?

If that were to work then you know it’s not drivers and stuff. If it does not work then check your new system is fully updated.

If it does work then you perhaps could consider just “swapping” the drives - I do not mean physically, logically rather.
Make the 4TB drive the main drive. The 1TB your backup file storage.

Even if you stick with 2020 you won’t fill up that 4TB drive…

Here are a couple of articles that may help:

I will try that once reinstalled.

If I was to consider swapping drives how do I go about that as windows is installed on “C”

@TheSevenflyer thank you I will give that a read now

A pretty simple process.
Clone the 1TB drive to the 4TB drive.
Go into BIOS and tell the computer to boot from the 4TB drive

Preserves your 1TB drive, you can go back to it without data loss if for any reason you are not happy.
Copies your 1TB drive exactly so no reinstall of anything.
When you are happy days weeks months you can just wipe the 1TB

Lots of software can do this. Search on cloning a disk with Macrium Reflect and have a read of the blog. There’s a free trial.

Thank you, so would this mean that my OS and everything will be on the 4TB drive?

Yes, everything, OS, the lot. There is no rush to do this, as long as you have spare space on your 1TB you are ok for now. Down the line you can move stuff over. Just something to think about if your MSFS install works nicely on the 1TB - path of least resistance. It depends on what the cause of your current woes are - drivers, etc, But if it all works on the 1TB drive, depending on what else you use the PC for you could consider this. Depends on if MSFS works without CTD if you just do the vanilla install

Thank you very much for the advice! will revert back if I have any further questions.

FYI, with Nvidia driver 572.16/572.42/47/60/70, Nvidia app and DX12 selected in MSFS 2020 a CTD won’t occur.

However, with DX11 selected in MSFS 2020, using the same latest Nvidia driver and Nvidia app, a CTD will occur.

Until Nvidia fixes the application and Asobo MSFS 2020/2024, please check what happens if you select DX12 instead of DX11 by manually editing cfg file.

To do this, you need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line
PreferD3D12 0

Change the number 0 to 1

and save the changes.

OR

If you need Nvidia app, make sure to select DX12 instead of DX11 in Nvidia app and the profile for MSFS 2020.

OR

If Nvidia app installed go to:
c:\ProgramData\NVIDIA
delete folder named NGX

Do you have the NVIDIA App installed? I have read on the 572.xx topics that people are getting CTD during loading if the have the App installed and DX11 on MSFS selected. It is an issue with the drivers.

If you do, then I would use the DDU to remove the NVIDIA driver and App and then reinstall the driver, this time do a custom install and only select the driver not the App. This may make it work.

The other thing you may be able to do is to open the MSFS config file in notepad and change the setting from DX11 to DX12 and save it. Then you should be able to boot into the sim.

@TenPatrol you legend, changing DX12 in Config worked!

Happy to help

As you can see, no need to reinstall Windows and MSFS – a simple change in the game settings solved the issue.

Please mark my suggestion to switch to DX12 instead of DX11 as the solution – it will help other players with a similar problem (CTD during MSFS 2020 loading).

Thank you so much.

Really appreciate it

You’re very welcome.

I’m wondering on which drive do you have the Community folder?

I have the community folder in drive (E) with core MSFS install on “C” if that makes sense?

apologies, a complete “divvy” when it comes to tech

Yes! That’s exactly how a proper MSFS 2020 installation should look.

Thats great, you have been such a great help man!

Just to confirm it’s the same process for 2024.

Install core sim on C and point packages folder to (E)?

Same process as in edit the configuration file
