Well, after a few short approaches with/without flaps extended there is a definite correlation with stopping distances which is the reverse of what one would expect.
Flaps extended, longer stopping distance.
Flaps retracted, shorter stopping distance.
I don’t own the DA-40TDI.
But, something is still amiss in the default DA-40NG flight model.
The Simulator Bug: Why the Sim DA40 Floats Forever
In default Asobo flight models, the DA40 behaves like a frictionless sailplane on approach due to two simulation flaws:
A. Under-Modeled Negative Thrust / Windmilling Drag
- The Root Bug: The stock MSFS flight model engine under-calculates the drag produced by a windmilling, unpowered constant-speed propeller at flat blade angles.
- Instead of calculating the massive parasitic drag of three rotating blades acting against airflow, the default sim treats the propeller as nearly “freewheeling” with minimal negative thrust.
B. Inaccurate FADEC RPM Scheduling at Low Power
- In the real AE300 engine, pulling the power lever to idle commands the prop to maintain target RPM by flattening out pitch completely.
- In the default sim, the governor logic often holds the blades at a coarser pitch than they should be at idle, reducing frontal surface resistance and letting the airplane glide indefinitely.
The In-Sim Symptom
Because the sim models the DA40’s ultra-low airframe drag but misses the massive propeller disc drag, the aircraft floats for thousands of feet down the runway in ground effect. Pilots are forced to either side-slip aggressively or push the nose down (which risks wheelbarrowing and prop strikes) to get the wheels on the tarmac. This was AIs take on it. I can concur I always have to side slip the da40NG on landing and sometimes that’s not enough I have to go around.
I was flying the DA40NG in SU6 Bush Trip activity yesterday and hoped the brakes would work again. The aircraft floated nearly forever in idle and when I finally touched touch, the brakes barely had enough stopping power. Nearly touched gras at the end of the runway.
It’s so strange that this aircraft has such good glider properties, the airframe is amazing and Diamond Aircraft put a lot of engineering into the body to ensure low stall speed and good gliding properties, but this kind of feels having no drag at all.
This needs a little more testing, but also during the taxi the steering is very powerful while the brakes are still rather mediocre. It’s a relatively light aircraft and the DA62 has better stopping power, with a very similar fuselage and significantly more weight.
Hi, I started the Bushtrip Bordeaux - Alpes with the DA40NG. The first legs with landing on concrete the plane stopped very slowly the brakes were not very efficient. But for the leg4, landing at LFCO with short grass runway, and impossible to stop the plane, crash in the trees, leg not validated !!! So for me, after SU6, the brake issue is not totaly fixed.
The weird thing is that I cannot get a grip on what actually introduced that behavior. The DA40s were totally fine for years literally; what special characteristic feature got broken here?
In the sense of: what separates the DA40 from other single piston low wing planes in FS?
I don’t think they tried an actual taxi/takeoff/landing with this plane before declaring that the problem is solved. It’s better, but still not solved. When you release the parking brake with the engines at idle and the brakes fully applied, you still move forward. That’s not right.
I just also had 2 landing attempts and the brakes are impossibly weak, they cannot slow down the plane after touchdown at all.
Brakes work fine, it’s the high idle thrust.
Yes! Finally fixed as of Update 7.
