Disappointed in Sim Update 5

The biggest issues for me is the trim and the graphics. Luckily no CTDs yet. Keeping my fingers crossed.

F***, what HAVEN’T I messed with at this point… Let’s see if I can even start putting a list together:

  1. Max out your GPU
    2.UserCFG - Set following fields to 0:
    -HDR10
    -Bloom
    -Motion Blur
    -Color Grading
    -Filmgrain

Terrain/Object LOD - 2.50000000 BOTH

VolumetricClouds
- Enabled 1
-Quality 9 (Just went for it here. Not sure if 9 even registers in-game)
VolumetricLights
-Enabled 1
-Quality 4
And that’s before you even load into the sim…

General Options>Graphics: Everything is set to High, with a few exceptions:
-60 FPS capped
-Volumetric Clouds - Ultra - Not sure if this over-rides the settings in the CFG file, but considering it doesn’t have a slider in-game (similar to terrain/obj LOD), I’m assuming it’s 2 different visual settings.
-Texture SuperSampling - 8x8
-Depth of Field - Medium
-Glass Cockpit refresh Rate - Medium

**Edit - Forgot to add that I have 200GiB allocated for my Rolling Cache

**Edit #2 - I also turned off “Camera Momentum”:
General Options>Camera:
-Freelook Momentum: OFF
-External Freelook Momentum: OFF
-Might as well turn off HUD while you’re in there. Haven’t tested to see if that saves any FPS

**Edit #3 - AI Traffic
General Options>Traffic>Airport Life
-All 3 set to 0 (Again, not sure if any gains are made, but why not??)
Traffic>Land and Sea Traffic
-All 4 set to 0

And then there’s:
-Multiplayer: OFF
-AI Traffic: OFF

I didn’t get 2020 for the “Multiplayer”, and I sure as S*** didn’t get it for “cross-platform Multiplayer”. It keeps me sharp without having to spend $300 on gas. I’m perfectly happy flying for 2+ hours without seeing another soul. I’ll save traffic for the real world.

Just like the media, once one person uses that word, it’s like flies to ■■■■. They just start coming out of the cracks and crevasses like roaches wanting to be next person to be able to call anyone with an opposing view a “Conspiracy theorist”

Well Said. I completely agree.
Seems to be 2 kinds of people when it comes to flight sims; Those who just want an accurate mechanical representation of flight.
And those who want to be in some sort of club with social interactions, that need to belong and be accepted by a the group. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Very Freudian.

Thanks for laying out your setting. I’ll have to try some of those tweaks.

It is SU5 working ok with addons like NeoFly, Air Hauler 2 or Skypark? I definitely want to try them but until now I don’t have any CTDs in SU5 so I would like to keep as now, specially after spending some money on AH2 or Skypark if I buy them.

Thank you.

EDIT: I tested Neofly before purchase anything and it seems it’s working perfectly.

Flight Level climb instructions use the Flight Plan’s Cruising Altitude as the maximum. If the Flight Plan Cruising Altitude is 38,000 ft, ATC can issue climb instructions to FL380 even if you are flying a C172. If your Cruising Altitude is 6,000 ft and you are flying the 747, ATC can issue climb instructions to 6,000 ft (unless a SID or STAR has higher altitudes).

If they don’t get the weather squared away I wouldn’t be surprised if PMDG delayed the rest of their products. If they don’t delay, most people would blame them for issues.

Is this update program still correct ?
The next Sim Update 6 is expected to land in mid September. Before that, a regional satellite imagery is coming on August 26, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

World update pushed to September and because of HOTAS bug(s) the game is unplayable at the moment.

This complete garbage “update” has totally ruined my experience. Game is now unplayable.

  1. “Update” actually forced my PC to completely re-download the entire 122GB of game AND ALL World Updates, over two days downloading for me!
  2. frame rates are utterly destroyed. Was getting 30+ fps on high-ultra. Now often getting <5fps in places.
  3. Now lost the ability to start anywhere in air via typing coords into the world map. Typed coords are converted to deg/min/sec but selecting that now just bounces in an out and doesn’t give you any map pin to select or “fly” option. This loss alone ruins the game for me

You are correct; Asobo is.

So this is what happened when I did Cloud 9 in the config file.

Pixels appear smaller now, more detail.

I am starting to think Asobo are totally out of their depth.

Jake, I sincerely hope that your conclusion belongs elsewhere.
I doubt that Asobo is not up to the task. I think the more likely explanation is that Microsoft caused this chaos by releasing the program to Xbox when they were fully aware that they had not given Asobo time to ready it for PCs. If there’s incompetence here, perhaps even disregard for and hostility toward PC users, it’s in Microsoft’s gaming division. I’d wager that it’s there that heads should roll.

One thing I found striking during the Asobo Tech lead interview post SU5 regarding flight systems. As I recall it did not seem to be an area of focus, or excitement he was essentially saying we are using the legacy from FSX, a single threaded simulation model or something along those lines. I don’t remember the exact words but what I took from it is lack of enthusiasm for the functional simulation aspect, laser focus on the gaming/3D performance/optimization aspects.
Worth watching.
Then again it’s just one senior manager. And bringing in the Working Title folks was a fantastic idea.

I have commented on both the bar at the top and recent airport history and I have also posted about the bad cloud definition which has largely been fixed with the hotfix. I am also not happy with the washed out appearance and the guidance arrows and have also posted about those.
Where I take issue is with folks saying that they cant even start the Sim or always have CTDs etc.
And blame the software when clearly the answer to these issues in specific cases must lie in the local setup.
Somewhere. I am NOT saying that this is satisfactory but trying to find out what it is that now causes the CTD (for example) on a particular PC while it doesnt in the same ultra or whatever settings on another PC must surely point to local setup.
Investigating what causes it in conjuction with an analysis of all hardware components might be far more helpful to Asobo then name calling.
That is why I have repeatedly made the case for MS or Asobo to make some sort of logging utilitry available that gathers all the significant info so they can examine and eventually see a path or trend.
I am not blaming anyone. But neither do I think it wise at this stage of this Sim development to invest in lots of add ons or start altering in any way the CFG file.
Yes, the sim may break something on some machines and not on others. Only examination of the differences between the PCs and setup will reveal why.
Just throwing toys out of the pram and crying ‘Microsoft broke my Sim’ helps nobody.
But then I am coming to all this from past experience. I have been in that MS situation in a corporate global environment. I have sent too many technicians on planes around the world to fix things not to know that the answer mostly lies local.
There is a reason why corporations often lock down the setup of their PCs in their network and it isnt always for security reasons.

I had the impression that he wasnt altogether happy about having to ‘take ownership’ of legacy FSX code and having to work with it. I had the impression that they are rewriting parts of that as they go along. He also seemed to be concerned about limitations of the browser technology which of course they have no control over and must accept and work with as it stands.

I dont remember…what did they do in this SU? What it updated?

First time I’ve launched since the update and wow… What a steaming pile.

The autopilot in the 787 is badly broken, the autobrake doesn’t work at all, and the graphics have taken a nosedive both in terms of FPS and quality.

I had no CTDs before SU5. Since then, I have had perhaps twenty. After some effort on my part, I have managed to identify the sources of my problems (I think).

One cause was the Orbx London Landmarks, bought through the FS2020 Marketplace. (It was therefore not removed when I emptied my Community folder, as recommended.) It has eventually been noted by others that the version from the Marketplace was causing CTDs, but the version bought directly from Orbx was not. This problem is directly attributable to software changes made by Asobo, not to my “local set up”, other than the fact that I misguidedly bought through the marketplace rather than direct from Orbx. Orbx have fixed the problem their end, but we are still waiting (again) for the Marketplace version to be updated (the version still available being the one that causes crashes). Presumably in the future, Asobo will be recommending that we also uninstall all Marketplace items as well as the Community folder?

Most of the other CTDs I have had has been when I start a flight airborne, and every airborne start has crashed. I don’t know if this is a cause for other users with similar problems - I did post asking about this but had no responses either way. I cannot see how my “local setup” could be responsible for such a consistent failure mode.

My other failure mode was when I set up a second monitor to view the popped-out ATC and VFR map. I only tried it once. Needless to say, before SU5 this had worked perfectly (though with a reduction in fps, as expected), and I successfully use it elsewhere, with never a crash. You might say this is a “local setup” problem, but the actual problem is that the FS2020 software cannot cope with a correctly setup system.

Asobo themselves have said the next hotfix will cure some of the CTD problems, which is an admission from them that their software is at fault.

I personally think I have a right to feel annoyed, even though I am in a better position than many others. We need to complain just to get Asobo to sit up and take notice. Comments like yours, absolving Asobo from all blame, do not help at all.
