Because Microsoft wanted to make as many announcements as possible to generate as much hype around their Showcase as possible? I don’t think it’s any more complicated than that.
EDIT: based on the activity on this forum in the past couple of days, they seem to have been successful.
Looking at the changelog, it’s unclear to me if the entire US has gotten MESH and IMAGERY updates or if it’s just for the urban areas listed as updated.
• Updated elevation data for the USA
• Updated aerial imagery for USA
Anyone know what was updated? If the mesh was updates for all of the US, does anyone know what meter it’s at now vs before? Thanks!
KBID (Block Island) is included as a handcrafted airport in this World Update. I briefly reviewed it here when I bought it from Gaya via Orbx (publisher).
The WU does not contain the ramp aircraft assets - including the iconic NorthEast Airlines Twin Otter (they have a fleet of 5) that flies hourly to and from BI to Westerly during the peak seasons. Otherwise, it appears to be identical - which makes sense since Gaya does a lot of the airport builds for MS.
Just a heads-up for anyone wondering. I’m reinstalling my Gaya Retail version to see what happens.
Give a reboot a whirl and with so many people all downloading sometimes this can happen and the update is not pushed. Fresh reboot and also with internet I always try and it’s worked thankfully
The Grand Canyon certainly doesn’t seem to have been improved. It still seems to have the same low quality aerial image, from what I’ve just seen of it anyway.
Yosemite looks a bit better. Its not night and day better but you’ll definitely notice an improvement if you’ve flown over it a lot in the past.
Another user has some interesting 3rd party comparison shots here as well. Even if the 3rd party addons are more detailed, this is still a big improvement for those on the stock sim.
I think China may be problematic, as the Chinese government is notorious for it’s secrecy and falsification of GPS data… Roads are famously out by hundreds of metres and intentionally aren’t shown as they’re laid out in real life, so getting any accurate photogrammetry must be very difficult indeed.
That’s one of the “low hanging fruit” quality-of-life updates done, 999 more to go!
I hope Alaska has had some love as the few parts I visited were a little dull. Don’t really understand the secrecy behind the update though. The community will be somewhat split between the mainly US-based residents who will be overjoyed and the rest-of-world residents who will wish their area was covered instead.
Clearly US data sources are easier to come by and it’s the biggest market (probably) so it makes sense in any case. Any world update is a welcome update
