DLSS 5 Wow!

So basically a dev can make a game that natively looks like Minecraft but “DLSS5 On” turns it into film quality CGI?

This might be a bit of wishful thinking, at least for the first iterations of this technology, but imagine for a moment what AI enhanced scenery, clouds and lighting could look like.

There is huge potential

  • Enhanced terrain textures
  • Higher terrain LOD
  • More defined volumetric clouds
  • More realistic sunlight, shadows, and global lighting

I think in a few years this could become reality.

Obviously terrain and weather accuracy needs to stay intact, but there is lots of room for visual improvements.

I get why people dislike the transformed character faces in the nvidia examples, but ultimately it is down for the developers to use it tastefully.

aka, sliders. The same sliders we all have access to now through reshade and nvidAI controls. Thats the “breakthrough” tech… DLSS, which yes was pretty impactful to the industry when it came out, is reduced to giving filter slider controls to the devs that already did their job. All 3 of those terms are tasks artists already do for any game being developed.

DLSS 5: “F U lighting guy, we don’t need the sun, or those shadows”

Also DLSS 5: “F U texture guy, I went to Home Depot and got some stain for that dry wood”

Also also DLSS5: “F U art director, I totally changed your whole game to look like a diorama-like tech demo with unfinished lighting”

Again, anybody eating this up is is excited that a number goes up from “4” to “5” and is just sloppin up the NvidAI propaganda. Nobody is mentioning that the demo ran on 2 5090’s… one fully dedicated to run DLSS5… An entire $4000 card solely to generate a glorified instagram filter.

To be fair, they are planning on implement DLSS 5 as a single-GPU ‘enhancement’.

I say “enhancement” because, like you, I question what that means.

My biggest concern is that it seems to be shifting DLSS more towards software AI, and I wonder:

  1. Will you need a 5090 or better to get adequate performance?

  2. Will it eat VRAM, making even 16GB GPU’s irrelevant for real-world sim use?

  3. Will Asobo do a better job with it than they have with DX12 coding?
    (Although that seems to be improving…)

maybe just maybe with the DLSS5 we can get a nice looking clouds

I’ve played around with Chat GPT modifying screenshot from the sim and the results are usually pretty good, texture enhancements, lighting enhancements and overall bringing more depth to the scenery and aircraft. The cloud enhancements are probably the biggest single upgrade it pulls off.

This is also the very beginning of this technology and it should only get better. Using AI to enhance the world we virtually fly in is a plus, it’s just another tool that can be used (if used correctly) to make the sim more immersive. As long as they don’t rely on it to build the game it seems to be ok

It has improved the lighting for sure. The glare has reduced and become softer and the darker areas have lightened up.

Agreed; some of the examples they showed, the characters’ faces do look better and more realistic, but I don’t really see how DLSS5 is going to ‘change’ anything in MSFS. Hopefully it improves lighting so it’s more realistic as, to me, this is one of the biggest drawbacks in MSFS 2024.

I’ve been telling the importance and legacy that DLSS will bring to the sim.

That’s an interesting one. Lighting is indeed too bright in dark scenarios, so a “correction” would be a good thing.

I can’t imagine using Nvidia’s new feature that boosts image brightness in MSFS when the sim already feels too bright. In its current form, this kind of tech just isn’t for me. My eyes are way too sensitive.

I hope you realize that your AI fix can certainly be done at your leisure on a fully rendered screenshot but it’s an entirely different can of worms to have that happen in real time as the frame is being rendered. It sounds as if you think there’s no processing cost or time lag involved.

Since it’s St Paddy’s day, the marketing of DLSS capabilities always makes me think of a line from The Fugitive:

“If they can dye the river green today, why can’t they dye it blue the other 364 days of the year?”

If it doesn’t have 32X Frame Generation, then I’m out. I need 1000 fps.

I’m afraid all of this “AI is going to do all our graphics rendering for us” sounds like vaporware to me. Where is this processing taking place. It’s either in the hardware on our devices or it’s happening at some distant data center and that requires insane amounts of data being streamed. I watched that video and the guy was going on about how AI had at its disposal all this information about how to render the world. Yeah, maybe in some data center somewhere but all that info can’t be on your personal machine. It has to be transmitted to it. All those frames still have to be generated in blazing speed by your computer equipment that, unless each of us can afford million dollar hardware that can hold all the learning of the AI engine, then we will end up with a slide show.

No not at all. I know my 4080 super would struggle to render that at 60fps in real time. That’s why companies like OpenAI are spending billions on $50k GPU’S, for their processing power. But they also have to have the consumer GPU in mind when creating this, they know not everyone is going to run out and buy a 50 series to get this. They literally cannot make enough to meet demand now with the memory shortage.

Way to be so closed minded…. If anything this will give people more tuning options, and for those that don’t like it such as yourself you can keep it off, is that simple. Technology is meant to advance and evolve, living in the past will get us no where.

If you showed someone from the 1900 an A350 and told them that thousands of people will die for this thing to evolve, they would think you are crazy and would much rather continue living with horses. People are generally like this until its proven to work. :rofl:

You don’t even have to go that drastic. People were like that when the car first came about. People used to think if you went over a certain speed on a train your body would just explode. And if they never pushed past that we’d still be going everywhere at 20mph
