Hands-On With DLSS 5: Our First Look At Nvidia’s Next-Gen Photo-Realistic Lighting

Wait for MSFS
Impressive. As he says, let’s wait for performance in a few months with a single GPU, and how it works with FS2024… For now its seems very oriented towards human rendering.
I don’t know what to think about this. It completely changes how a game looks, losing it’s authenticity. Not a fan.
Woah!
Probably unusable in VR for quite a while due to performance reasons though.
But still very cool for envieonments. But yeah I can see it messing with some games’ intended design! Especially character faces and general artistic vision.
Though supposedly game devs can control its deployment very precisely.
It’s completely changing facial features. Eyes, lips, noses all look different. It ain’t just lighting.
It looks to me like those crummy AI videos. The faces are uncannily perfect and move in unnatural ways, those kinds of videos.
I’m skeptical, but that’s my reaction to everything these days.
Impressive! Can’t wait, bring it on!
yes but in the SIM you don t see faces . and facts that i see in the lights and textures is a game changer look at that colours when you slide , its a photorealistic feature for free , no filters no nothing , will be changing the simulator for real .
Seriously to anyone excited about this, whats so “wow!” about this? Anybody cheering NvidAI for this DLSS “5” and actually wanting it in MSFS is delusional.
Ignoring the character transformations, which is just applying a live snapchat filter and looksmaxxing everyone in the shot (shocker, AI bros like hot people), take a real hard look at what its actually doing to the environment. Which is what’ll be front and center for its implementation in MSFS.

Why would you want this?
The elephant in the room is, you can already do this!! The multi-trillion dollar company gobbling up all of our hardware for this, is telling you this is a “breakthrough” for “DLSS 5” when in reality its simply a filter, powered by AI. They can just implement this now through their own filters feature if they wanted (oh right, DLSS moves new GPU’s, “filters” don’t).
Better yet, you can do this right now! Make it look worse like this is doing, or make it look better, however you want: Reshade, Rex Atmos, NvidAI Filters, whatever your flavor. Cool/Warm, Black level, Exposure, Shadows (turn that one way down), Sharpness are just some of the sliders you can play with in whatever you use.
This has nothing to do with some revolutionary DLSS tech. These are just cheap AI slop features paraded under “DLSS 5”.
Trust me. The topic of the week throughout the gaming industry is currently (and will be) that this is garbage. Plain and simple. NvidAI fed us the slop, so who’s at the trough?
You make some good points. Have you ever wondered why MSFS with AA disabled is such a shimmery mess? Have you ever compared it to Aerofly FS4 with AA disabled? Why would one 3d engine look so bad without AA while another looks great? The one saving grace for MSFS is that DLSS stops the shimmering. That doesn’t make it right. Why make a ■■■■■■ 3d engine that requires third party hardware to fix it? $$$
Wondering when MSFS will get official DLSS 5 support-surely we can use the injector in the meantime for newer DLSS?
Honestly ai has affected the gaming industry negatively in the sense that hardware is now expensive as hell, but this technology on a flight simulator could be revolutionary. This if implemented correctly to correct a lot of the light and texturing issues the sim currently has. I’m open to try it personally and if it doesn’t work for me or you there is always the option not to use it.
Great. Will come with MSFS2028 maybe.
“ DLSS 5 provides game developers with detailed controls for intensity, color grading and masking, so artists can determine where and how enhancements are applied to maintain each game’s unique aesthetic.” you forgot this . and it answer your doubt , im curious too .
Same concern still applies: how will it cooperate with gauges and displays that need to show detailed, accurate text that changes quickly? DLSS4 had some issues with ghosting, and that was just an upscaler and not a full renderer/filter
Unless most of the deck can be masked, but I wonder on whose end such an implementation would have to be
its for Asobo to figure it out
Well, how it works is pretty much known, and NVIDIA explained it well. So, unless you say NVIDIA lies, we have to assume it is only manipulating light.

Its made by a marketing team so id say hold your horses and wait its release. Im really sceptical with the gaming industry these days, too many disappointments recent years.
We seem to have gone from the age of “The Knights who say ‘Ni’” to the “Luddites who say ‘Slop’”. Peeps want to jump on the “slop” bandwagon ‘cos it means you’re “internet” and “edgy”
As for this “vision of the art teams”. A lot of game graphics look the way they do because of the limitations of the art teams and/or engine, not because of their “vision”. Anything that can improve on that is a plus for me - it’s about my vision not theirs and I’m paying their bills.
If it was up to a lot of them we would have things like Motion Blur, Chromatic Abberration, Depth of Field, Film Grain, sick inducing Head Shake and capped 30fps rammed down our throats…oh wait!!
These are things I turn off in every game if I can - goes against the artists vision and I couldnt give a jot. I would even go so far as to call these effects “Slop”.
No problem if I can turn them off, same thing for this DLSS 5, no problem if you don’t like it, just turn it off.
Obvious caveats:
A lot if the AI stuff is, at the moment, utter junk. A solution looking for a problem
This wont be much use in the short term if it only works on very high end systems which few people have or can afford.
In practice it may actually be ■■■■ given we have only seen it in nVidia self selected examples.
Upsides for me was the improvement it appears to make on older games that don’t support fancy Ray Tracing or some of the latest tech.
And another thing, what’s all this new fangled “aeroplane” nonsense? If we were meant to fly we would have wings. Goes against the “vision” of Nature and/or the Gods of your choice ![]()
Nvidia announced a deal in Dec to pair nvidia chips with company called Groq. It’s supposed to improve “inference” which will make AI quicker and cheaper- allegedly.
So expect AI to dominate gaming even more! Quite aside from the rest of our lives!
