A new DLSS DLL version was released on 2/10, and it surprised me because we went from 2.5.1 to 3.1.1. Not sure why the version change is so large, but it’s available for download here.
It has some interesting features including presets, which I’m assuming Asobo would need to take advantage of in their coding.
Overall update includes:
Added ability to stay up-to-date with the latest DLSS improvements
Added ability to customize DLSS based on different scaling ratios and game content.
Updated DLSS Programming Guide for new API additions
Performance and Optimization fixes
Bug Fixes & Stability Improvements
I’m curious what my fellow VR simmers are seeing in terms of performance. I downloaded and swapped it in and flew with it all night tonight. I did have a CTD almost immediately, but then it didn’t happen again and had some great flights for the rest of the evening. In terms of performance, I’m not seeing any drastic frame rate increases while in VR with my 4090. The numbers on the cockpit gauges almost look worse during night flying. But the scenery looks better to me… particularly city night lights.
Anybody else try it out? I am going to continue flying with it and will report back if I spot any issues, but so far, it seems to be good.
I flew with it installed for a couple of VR flights today of around 5 hours duration total. It’s hard to say for sure but instruments looked a bit over sharpened, especially noticeable at night.
While I didn’t have any CTDs in flight, twice in a row I did have MSFS fail to quit properly after exiting, requiring a manual shutdown of the app with task manager. This type of crash is not entirely unusual, but it usually doesn’t happen in such quick succession.
I’ll probably go back to the SU11 DLSS version until Asobo integrates any updates like this properly.
I personally do not use either on my 3090, if (glorified) super sampling is required then something else is wrong and raytracing (outside MSFS) as it is today is underwhelming.
The OP is taking about the version non the type of DLSS as far as I can see
Correct. This discussion is not about “DLSS3” or DLSS frame generation. The DLSS version im talking about is the DLL file version only and by coincidence is now suddenly 3.1.1.
@Tweak112 yes, this should work with your series 30x. Based on the version notes there are improvements to base upscaler performance and stability.
Anybody who tries this needs to do the usual, back up your existing DLL file and revert if you experience problems.
Game developers can choose to implement certain versions of the DLSS DLL release and optimize their game around it. So while NVIDIA is making improvements to DLSS, Asobo is the one who then decides to include the recent versions with their own SIM UPDATES (SU).
Asobo does not support us swapping out DLSS file versions manually. Its just something us tweakers tinker with to see how it impacts performance.
The DLSS dll is in the program folder, not the drivers, and it nominally part of the game’s software.
However, since the dll is from nVidia, if they release a newer version, you can use that one to replace the one in any DLSS 2.0 game, even if the devs haven’t updated it:

I don’t have that folder (MS Store installation)? The basefolder of MSFS is - as far as I know - usually something like C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe … BUT, in that folder, no “Content” folder to be found?
The folder is:
C:\Users\“YOUR USER NAME”\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft Flight Simulator\Content
That is: if you have installed the game on your C:\ drive.
If you have installed it on another drive the path will be different as well. If you still cannot find it, simply use the Windows Search and look for the file name.
@N891RNTBM940@henk4p1969 if you purchased and play MSFS using the STEAM version, then the location of the nvngx_dlss.dll file is located C:<your_steam_lib_location>\steamapps\common\MicrosoftFlightSimulator
For example, mine is located at the default C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MicrosoftFlightSimulator\nvngx_dlss.dll
Thanks, but I didn’t deploy the Steam version. After doing a search on my PC, the only iteration of that file is for War Thunder. There is NO instance of that file in anything to do with MSFS. Not sure why it isn’t in an MSFS directory somewhere, but it’s not.
