Does anyone still have cloud noise issue?

So World Update 3 release notes marked the cloud noise issue as fixed, the “clouds pixelated and grainy” thread has been closed and marked as a resolved bug… but I still have pretty bad grain on the tops of clouds in direct sunlight. To the same extend as I did before the update was released. I did a clean install and ensured usercfg file was not on read only and the sharpen and filmgrain settings were left on and the noise issue is still substantial (Clouds on ultra, 5120*1440 display, RTX 2080 Super).

I know many users have had their cloud issue resolved but I am curious if anyone else is in the same boat as I am?

I’m also still disappointed in most cloud situations. Cloud cover often has this odd looking pixelated grainy look on the edges that make it very distracting. Maybe it’s me i don’t know. i have thousand plus hours in FSX with REX Soft Clouds + Active Sky. Maybe I just think that’s how clouds should look. But I also have hundreds of hours in real planes (as a passenger) and still think thick cloud cover is odd looking. So who knows. Maybe it’s my settings, would like some suggestions.

For me, the grainyness from a distance seems much better, however the blocky edges are still present when passing clouds close by.

I think, if they smooth that out the FPS will drop because the clouds must be of a higher resolution then.

The graininess is gone for me, now they look incredible good, I use Ultra.

Yes…

They are improved over the last version and sometimes look fine but I still quite often see what I would deem excessive grain/pixelation at times, even at ultra. Mainly on the edges is where it’s apparent.

I know there are some inherent limitations with the current technology, but it is something I would hope to see improve over time as new techniques arrive. I’m quite interested to see how volumetric clouds in star citizen compare once they are added - currently they only have the volumetric space gas clouds but they don’t demonstrate this pixelated behaviour of MSFS. If once terrestrial volumetric clouds are added and they don’t have these grain/pixelation issues at least we will know it’s a solvable problem with the core tech at work.

Same goes for DCS as they are implementing volumetric clouds soon too and have a habit of making things look visually pleasing. Will be interesting to compare… looking at the preview of their new volumetric cloud tech here while there’s definitely still some visible, there is significantly less graininess than I get in MSFS so hopefully it’s representative of the final product and that means there is room for MSFS to improve too:

Strange that so many users still appear to have grainy clouds.
In my case they look a lot better en even with modest specifications I can run these at ultra now.
I hope the cause will be found soon.
First thing that crossed my mind right now would be Sharpening in Nvidia Control panel. But that’s just a wild guess.

Hard to tell in VR, but everything else is NOT improved here. In fact, new issues have arisen with some old ones now exaggerated. Spikes seem all gone.

I still have pixelated clouds after update.
Even without the pixelated issues the clouds still don’t look very convincing in VR.
At times they also appear as cotton balls. They appear way too mushy even on ultra settings.
At other times during sunlight later on in the afternoon they appear more as demolition dust clouds.
I avoid using broken/overcast for now.

The second pic looks like a bldg was just imploded and not clouds at all.

hey @UptownJones7
Now I’m on holiday and flown a lot. This is my live look r/n. Some of the clouds (in general) still weird looking, the very dense ones are still bit noisy, but for me this update made a step forward. Sorry for the bad news (as we shared some thoughts under previous post)

I would agree the more dense the cloud, the more noisy it is for me as well. I guess the next point to look forward to will be DX12 implementation in the summer, hopefully that will improve things drastically. Also I hope Asobo has not actually considered this issue ‘resolved’ and is still planning on making ongoing improvements in all future updates.

@BubbaBlitz7348 it is, and that’s his point… and I agree my (thick) clouds look more like dust balls then fluffy water based cloud.

I still have the hideous clouds, they have ever so slightly improved over the update but have not been ‘fixed’, as shown in the feedback snapshot :slightly_frowning_face:
The update has also introduced a very annoying blue outline on objects in certain conditions😒

The graininess seems to be mostly gone for me with the latest update. There is still a very small bit of nearly unnoticeable graininess on the edges of the clouds - but that may have been there all along and now I’m just more sensitive to it. But it sure seems to be back to the way it looked before the last update before this one. I’ve got about 3 hours with the new update and probably an hour of that trying to re-create the cloud problem. Not sure if this would help anyone but one of the first things I did was reset the graphics back to the default Ultra settings and they looked fine there. After that, I reset them to High-End, no changes at all to the stock settings and it’s working fine so far. This is on a 55" monitor so if the graininess was visible, that monitor sure would show it.

Yes I have the blue outline as well which is very annoying.

Pretty much completely gone.

Hope they improve grainy shadows next.

Better now just a massive performance hit when flying through them and below them

Same here, and I DO NOT remember reading about a cloud pixelation fix in this latest update. See if you can find a comment about this in the link below. I must have missed it.
