That’s exactly my point, you’ve described it perfectly. Thanks for your input.
A lot of thanks.
Thanks. The same experience but “delayed” for days and days!
I have the same problem of slow download here, I also have fast internet (at least by South American standards) and I need to wait for hours to download any FS update. If Steam platform customers could download each update from Steam servers, instead of being directed to slow MS / Asobo servers, everyone could benefit from it, including Microsoft platform customers, due to the drop in data traffic.

Hi Bau, I think you are correct. I have a lot of games on Steam and ZERO download problems and the speed is max. I don’t think Microsoft needs Steam servers (I think they don’t lack money) and the idea should be to put servers in South America as well (at least I didn’t see any on the list that appears in the flight simulator). I was stopped for almost a month with bigfiles 0.1.53 and the other that follows. I never found a solution either in zendesk or in the forums and in the end the solution was that a friend who bought the FS and uploaded them for download, in the end thanks to that I was able to download the rest.
Was it necessary? Not really, but the ineffectiveness of current downloads leaves me no other way than to try alternatives like that.
Greetings!
I was so excited to try out the latest Oculus update that supposedly fixes some frustrating issues. Got that installed and booted up Flight Sim. After waiting the usual ~5 mins for it to load it informs me that there is a new mandatory update that I must download from the MS Store. Ugh. Installed that update, and over 5 hours later it is still downloading the additional 9 GB update.
Seriously, why can’t I use the sim while it downloads updates? Why couldn’t I have been notified that an update was coming and started the process before going to bed?
This is horrendous user experience.
How can I fix my issues here when I can’t even figure out how to work this forum stuff…69 Y/O men shouldn’t have pc…can you give me advice on how to do this?
What issues are you having?
It would be very helpful to have the option choose whether one wants to accept an update or not. Many times the sim is running fine before an update and after updating no longer works. It would be nice to be able to delay an update to learn if others who have updated are having issues. In my case, I am currently waiting for a 3rd party developer to repair an aircraft that was broken by a sim update 3 weeks ago. So for 3 weeks I have been unable to use MSFS in my home cockpit.
I agree.
Forced updates have stopped me from playing several times.
We need to be able to have updates when we want them.
Whoever is dictating these updates needs to consider that they may be forcing people into an update every time the try to play the game. Some of us only play occasionally not weekly or monthly. The update process may take all the play time allowed for that day.
I don’t play often but I keep my eye out for the updates being released and set the pc downloading when I’m having dinner, sleeping etc so that when I have time to fly I can do.
CurriedCat you have a good way to deal with the problem. I haven’t been able to make that work as I keep forgetting. I wonder if we could get a text or email from the xbox app or microsoft store that tells us there is an update. That would stop the suprises. Off to google I go.
Not sure how useful it’ll be for you but I follow @msfs_support on Twitter. They usually post about the patches there. Set an alarm for when they post. You’ll get some other stuff as well but one way of being notified.
Be interested to see if you find another way.
thanks good tip, so far no other way but still looking; will let you know
I purchased this a few months ago and have not flown it yet! I am not been able to get past the updates. I finished a big update last night and when I wanted to fly this morning I had to have another 17GB update. Every time I try to open the software I have to run huge updates. I can’t get past them and it is frustrating beyond belief. I have MSFSX installed and don’t have that issue. I upgraded my computer and my bandwidth and it still takes days to install these huge updates. WHY? WHY? WHY?
I feel the same as many users over here: Time is often very limited. And having to wait for a 17GB update is just not fair. I appreciate MS attempt to keep their game as up to date as possible, but my time in front of MSFS cannot be dictated by them! The game is awesome, let us use it when we can!
It should be possible to preselect what you want to download. Accidentally did the verify files thing too and having to wipe the whole sim. Now it wants to install the full 171 GB of files while I dont want all of it to be installed right away. Furthermore I only have 160GB available…
No.
This app is not a traditional one that runs just on your PC with no connection to the outside world. Much of the functionality is provides by servers n the cloud, like the Bing satellite and aerial imagery that is streamed on demand. The software that runs on the PC must be compatible with the software on the servers. It would be much harder to ensure that if users might be running a large number of different versions of the software.
People keep complaining now that Asobo / Microsoft is doing poor quality control and don’t notice obvious new bugs in updates. Think how much more QA work they would have to do if they had to check several old versions of the simulator on the PC against every server update. I am sure it is hard enough to cater for other differences in PC hardware and Windows software. (That is why MSFS on the Xbox most likely will be of much more consistent quality: All machines are the same.)
Sorry. I know this opinion will not be popular.
Also, consider this scenario:
“Sigh, this bug is so annoying”
“Oh, that was fixed a month ago”
“But I don’t want to update! I want you to fix just this one bug of mine, it is clearly much more important than all other bugs, but don’t touch anything else!”
Can you imagine the amount of whining like the above? People feeling entitled to personal releases with just their pet bug fixed but no other bug fixes or feature work.
As a small example of the problem My software is in version alpha 19. I see error reports from folks still running alpha 12. This issues were fixed many versions ago. Generally finding the right balance between keeping the software current and not forcing updates is hard and the more complex the application the harder it gets.
I think a reasonable compromise would be to allow the user to put off the update (at least for a while) and to set a time for the update. The problem here is that any timed update may well be unattended which brings another set of possible issues
This is a no win situation IMHO
