Download/MSFS running cripples internet speeds + eternal slow download

When MSFS is running, my internet goes from 700 mb/s wired to 9. The sim downloads 119GB at 4mbit/s. This is intolerable.

Detailed steps to reproduce the issue encountered:

Uninstall MSFS. Reinstall. Attempt download. Get 4mbit/s and 9mb/s internet speed.

right top cornerā€¦ there is a magnifying glass with help of this you can search existing topicsā€¦

https://forums.flightsimulator.com/search?q=download%20speed

And there is also a official FAQ which you can reach with the ā€œSupportā€ link in forum headingā€¦

None of these mention their actual internet speed going down; in fact most show their actual internet being 200 or 150 or whatever and msfs going at 13ā€¦ my actual internet appears to go down to match MSFSā€™s.

We have similiar topics, in special related to WIFI users

As in the other topics mentioned: try to connect your PC with the Router with an ethernet-cable and report back.

So, an update:

  1. Iā€™m already using an ethernet cable
  2. I disabled all non-MS startup services and flushed my DNS cache (ipconfig/flushDNS in the cmd prompt) and now my speeds are back
  3. Now getting 45-55 mbits/s. A marked improvement but about half of my usual 100-150 on updates. Iā€™ll try some more of the solutions on the forum but idk if those will boost it any more, perhaps 50 is all the MS servers will grant me todayā€¦

if the dns was the issue ( we ignore for the moment the local cache ) then may be worth to try other one, e.g. 1.1.1.1 etcā€¦

This is going to be somthing to do with your network provider. You can do these things to check to see who to start fussing at.

goto Bufferbloat Test by Waveform and check what your network latency is.
if your latency is high (this is the only number we care about running this test) then that will be your issue.

Now to find out why its high
get ping plotter its free and run some routes thru it it will tell you where possible issues are. Also if its ISP related it will give you evidence to get them to fix the real problem.

are you on cable or fibre

if your on cable its possible that either you modem or router use the puma chipset buy something based on the broadcom chipset and the issue will correct itself.

Also check the web for your network card, windows has had issues with certain network adapters(INTEL) and the fix for that will be finding the oem driver and replace the windows driver with the oem driver,

So theres a place to start. Let me know what you find, I had the exact same problem and it turned out to be a bad driver for my net card, + a broken tap from the ISP which Im still waiting to have fixed.

@MichaMMA @BubbaBlitz7348 So I changed my DNS to Googleā€™s for both IPv4 and IPv6 and Iā€™ve also installed Realtekā€™s latest network drivers. Speed now ranging from 50-60. I suppose thatā€™s the max the servers will grant me today, so Iā€™ll just let this run for a couple hours since Iā€™ve tried everything else. Thanks for the help both of you, itā€™s 10x better than 5mbit/s so Iā€™ll take it.

IPV6 you say? Disable ipv6 in your router and your machine, and that should give you some more boost as well. It worked here and someone just posted a solution to the speed problem by disabling ipv6 the other day. Worth a try.

Youā€™re all very lucky to get Mb p/s,since the inclusion of Xbox users Iā€™m only getting Kb p/s and using task manager Iā€™m actually uploading data more than I receive it.I still believe that the servers are overloaded,Iā€™m on a 70 Mb p/s line and downloading updates are fine, its just flying but mostly airports that are the problem with drops from 45 fps to 8 Kbp/s just when Iā€™m landing and that really SUCKS!!

Iā€™m having the exact same issue, My internet is ok for all applications except MSFS. When I load the app my internet drops to about 6-7Mbps down from over 300Mbps. I have turned off non MS services and flushed the DNS cache but no luck as soon as the application is started there is an issue with Network speeds. What else can I try?

  1. Check your ethernet card drivers, windows has issues with some drivers, (I had this issue and saw similar results). Find out what card you have then do an internet search for it, and see if there are reported problems with windows and your card, if so then download the net driver from the maker of the card and install it.

  2. Get a vpn connect it and then run the sim if it runs better, then your ISP is the one causing this (one way or another).

  3. If it works with a VPN, then get ping plotter and run some tests without vpn running, and see where the issue is. There is plenty of documentation avaliable to help you use the program, and to document your findings. *(ISPā€™s will deny the problem, unless you shove your findings in their face).

  4. Check you card and make sure its seated (of course if its onboard you this wont apply ).

  5. Buy a new network cable, not a cheap Walmart one buy a good one and make sure its the same CAT as all the other cables on the network, if you have a varied type of cables ie cat 5 cat 6, this will cause some issues with speeds and performance.

Using a laptop so NIC canā€™t be reseated. Cable is CAT7 by Commscope very good quality. We use the same at work in the Data Center. No change using VPN or using different DNS. Also only this application has this affect. I had a big download on Steam and no issues. Also when I close MSFS my internet speeds return to normal. Also when MSFS is running all apps are affected. Itā€™s as if it takes over my network and routes all traffic through the app very slowly. Itā€™s the strangest thing. My other laptop in the house runs fine with full speed. Why is it only this app?

Did you check to see if windows has an issue with your network adapter? I have a onboard intel one, and for some reason with the win driver installed it did similar things fast on some slow on others, when I installed the intel driver from intel it started working right. So try that next?

This is a plaguing issue. When my download sped on 1 gig google fiber goes to 1.5 mbits/s I switch Ethernet inputs and it boosts back to 50 mbits/s. Something on Asoboā€™s side is wacked.

If all you have to do is to switch interfaces, and then you get better speeds, then well I dont know how to tell you this, something is wrong on your end. If it was the servers and you switched interfaces, well you still get the same performance as you did with the other interface and you just told us that isnt the case.

I have two machines here, both i7ā€™s both 16 gigs of ram, and older running a 1080ti and the other running a 1660 ti. The newer machine downloaded at 90mbps, the other machine could barely break 10. Did some research, and found that windows doesnt like the net drivers on the slow machine, installed the oem net drivers on the slow machine, and guess what it wasnt slow anymore eitherā€¦

I purchased a vpn and speeds went up 100x, itā€™s a Microsoft/Asobo server issue.

Im sorry if you purchased a vpn, and then it works better, your provider is causing it. A vpn bypasses your ISP.
Vpn on = good
Vpn off = bad

You need to talk to your ISP, tell them the same thing it works with a vpn but not without, see what they tell you it is. It took me almost six months of calling and scheduling service calls before they would admit that the issue was on their end. ā† True storyā€¦

My speeds with the MSFS servers are faster with the vpn my overall speed is slower. This is well documented that the Asobo servers are anemic in North America. If others run into this issue Iā€™m willing to bet a vpn will solve this.

Now see today, I havent change anything since yesterday, its running perfectly. I ran an 1 1/2 hour flight and the fps stayed steady 22fps the whole time, even looks better. Must of been that nekid goat dance I did last nightā€¦yeah thats itā€¦
