Dx11 or dx12?

That’s interesting, I had results that were the exact opposite.
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
64GB DDR4
Gigabyte 3080 TI OC
All graphics settings maxed and running @ 1440p

DX12 - 2% utilization @ 60FPS

DX11 - 60% utilization @ 58FPS

That is interesting indeed. See attached for resolution and graphics settings I’m using. - In DX12(beta) my graphics settings remain unchanged

dx12 seems to be broken right now

It’s certainly not working as it should, I’m running it for now & will see how it goes. My first post on the topic i was running with DX11, first try with DX12(beta) caused my game to CTD… for now, though it seems to be running ok with a few screen stutters here and there, but not much. I am having +/- 10 FPS more with DX12 at this point… Colors seem better with DX12 though, at least on my system…

Your screenshot shows you’re using DX11.

You are right, but it’s an old shot… here’s the latest screen shots…

Not for me. I looks like the game/sim doesn’t like some addons in the community folder. It was working fine in DX12 until I added the HUEY UH-1c. That caused the sim not to fully load and CTD before the main screen even though I had not even previously selected it. Huey only works in DX11, and otherwise no CTD. Therefore, you might try moving your community folder to see if DX12 runs ok.

I’ve made a couple of videos comparing 11 vs. 12 on my system. Flights are from same location using Live Weather with time of day adjusted to better see and match each flight.

If you want to sync them up you can advance and pause each vid to the following times then start playing then start playing at the same time. (sorry I’ll do a better job of editing them next time :expressionless:)

TO in vid 1 occurs around 2:10
TO in vid 2 occurs around 1:11

You can check them out here if you are interested:

Comments and questions welcome.

I have already noted that I have an interesting behaviour with DX12 in VR. PC is 11900k, 32GB, all M.2 storage, RTX3090, Reverb G2.

Frame Cap at 30fps in nvcp. OXR 100, Repro off.

With DX11 the sim runs smooth with the higher settings shown below and RR100. I got very fine 30 fps but at always 99% GPU load.

With DX12 the picture changes.

With the same settings the fps are capped at 26,7Hz by the game. For getting higher framerates I have (of course) to lower gfx settings.

But doing so dont raise the fps slowly but instaed there is a jump. Using the same settings as in DX 11 I need to lower RR to below 85 to get this jump and have steady 30fps again. Without fps cap in nvcp there are now around 37 fps.

Just by changing two settings (ambient occlusion and raymarched reflections) the jump happens just below RR90.

But the most important fact comes now. This happens with 20% lower GPU load (80% average) and also 20% less power consumption. So DX12 give me an similiar performance at 20% reduced load. If I could find a way to unleash this 20% DX12 will be same or better as DX11.

Beside this. No ctd so far with DX12 but some strange 3 second blackouts with GPU drop to almost zero. Have to check this out, maybe an addon problem.

DX12 Settings for 30fps@RR80 or 26,7fps@RR85

Ambient occlusion and raymarched reflections lowered → 30fps@RR85 or 26,7fps@RR90

DX12 has some potential imho.

Hmm, did Asobo get around fixing CTDs in VR with DX12?

DX12 changes how the GPU processes frames distributing workload differently to the GPU engines. For me, DX12 eliminates the GPU stuttering I had with DX11. Now I only use DX11 when flying aircraft that do not work with DX12.

So I do. The reduced stress to my GPU is very welcome. I am curious how DX12 develops in the near future.

I do think Asobo has done some work on 12. I used the same settings in both vids, just changed DX. I did not try to tweak the settings for 12 but might do so with the info posted here. Thanks very much for that.

From a perception standpoint I feel like 12 renders light much better than 11. This naturally tends to make the clouds look better, and I noticed the sun looked much better in 12. Overall I think the sim looks cleaner and more defined with 12.

I was hoping to have the same weather for both videos but the darn METAR updated in the time it took to reboot the sim to 12 (timing is everything, ain’t it).

My only issue with 12 is the (semi) routine load ins. I am assuming it is scenery but could be weather or something else. The FPS drops from 60’s to high 20’s for about 5 to 7 seconds then returns to ‘normal’. Even during these there is no ‘stuttering’ per-se, just a major drop in frames for a few seconds. Again this is without tweaking so maybe that can be resolved.

Your eyes must be deceiving you. I don’t see any visual difference between DirectX 11 and 12 in the same situation. I have drawn up a comparison.

I disagree, there is a change. It is slight but it is there. I am assuming the images are overlays. If you slide the screen break left and right several times you can see the difference better. The trees and clouds are were it is most noticeable.

Naturally it is all subjective to a certain extent, but to me there is a difference. Is it enough to switch from one to the other? At this point no imho. However that is only due to the FPS stability. If that gets resolved I see no reason to not go to 12.

Time will tell, thanks for the example.

Until DX12 is fully stable I will switch.ATM DX11 runs a lot more fluid on my setup. FBW DX12 micro stuttering during takeoff.DX11 during takeoff completely smooth.
DX11 works perfect when gpu limited.

Pretty stable for me. This is mostly Ultra with Online Functionality OFF on my 3080Ti. Note the Renderscaling in the screenshot. My monitor is 4k. By setting my resolution lower and upscaling it to just before my max resolution, I can ensure that my GPU is ALWAYS the limiting factor. In other words, the GPU is kept very busy feeding the monitor and it almost NEVER waits for the CPU. Very smooth. I have a G2 arriving shortly. I will report on this approach in VR when it arrives. I hope this helps.

I have better performance in VR than PC. But both cause frame rate loss and stutters vs dx11. It’s not as bad in VR for me for some reason. Likely any one or more of the countless settings that can be modified from Mixed reality to in-game graphics to Nvidia to Windows to BIOS to GPU to CPU. etc. This on- that off… this set to that. that set to this..so on and so on.

I did get some kind of DX update yesterday…but I haven’t tried it again in dx12 yet so maybe it’s better now? IDK

What is this and where is it? I’ve seen it referenced in several threads lately but I don’t see OXR anywhere.

typo, must be 100, corrected

OXR is for Open XR.
